Dominaria is finally here, which means rather than having a poll last week, we've now got a special episode showing off the power of the new set in Standard. If you're a fan of the Against the Odds poll (and Dominaria), don't worry-it's back at the end of the article and overflowing with sweet new Dominaria cards! So, "what are we playing this week?" I hear you ask. Oath of Teferi Superfriends, of course! While there are a ton of cards from Dominaria that I can't wait to play for Against the Odds, one of the most exciting is Oath of Teferi, which is sort of a mixture between The Chain Veil and Doubling Season, allowing us to activate our planeswalkers twice each turn! We can do all sorts of sweet things with the enchantment on the battlefield, from ultimating our planeswalkers super quickly to drawing tons of cards or keeping all of our opponent's creatures at bay with Gideon of the Trials and Dovin Baan. Eventually, we play Karn, Scion of Urza, make a few 10/10 Construct tokens, and kill our opponent. Plus, thanks to all of our planeswalkers and the legendary theme of our deck, we can also take advantage of some of the spicy new legendary sorceries from Dominaria! Can Oath of Teferi make Superfriends one of the best decks in Standard? Let's get to the video and find out!

If Gideon emblem only said you can't lose the game the approach would take presedence but seeing that it says your opponent can't win the game also then approach winning that game is not possible and a clearly a bug.

Amazing deck and amazing command of a complicated deck. Knowing how to tick is complicated enough, but having to do that twice for each Planeswalker and needing to sequence across 3 or 4 Planeswalkers is damned impressive.

I have always loved planeswalkers. I have the entire collection of them. I have been waiting for this set to ship so I can use my oaths! I have a casual walkers deck. 4 oath of nissa, 4 cryptolith rite, 4 unbridled growth, 4 deadly recluse and thornweald archer. 1 of each of the vivid lands, 4 nykthos, 15 forests, and the rest are planeswalkers of all colors. bolas, jace, teferi, sorin, any that either remove, or add creatures and can work to a winning ult. only good for casual play tho

I love how opponents scooped not from a lethal on board but from PURE VALUE! I will say this though I think that planeswalkers are the worst type of card magic has ever printed but this deck was insanely fun to watch do its thing but I think for the long term health of the game they really need to pull back on planeswalkers if not completely remove them from the game.

It's pretty gross that a Gatewatch planeswalker from a standard set is still bugged. It's not like it's a weird older card with weird interactions, it's a popular 3-mana mythic seeing play in Modern.

I suspect they dont make a list of potential interactions and test them all. It is not that hard. You just need to set up a game in debug mode, put the cards/effects/etc in play and observe results

@@diegocrusius I know this is an old video and you might not even see this comment, but I'd like to point out that Gideon and Approach are too commonly played for them to be able to just handwave it away. Sure, they might not have thought to test the interaction originally, but they're in the same block and the meta has made it clear that it's something that's likely to happen, so they ought to have tested it.

I think it's the most underrated card in the set. We've played two decks with it now and it's pretty close to "you win the game" for five mana.

Honestly, in my own testing, Teferi and his oath are REALLY good And double Gideon +'s is a godsend with some seal aways...and some bindings...and some counters tbh at that point, they are no longer playing and I'm in the second sun/Teferi ult/Gideon beatdown waiting room. Also why Cast down over Seal away?

Raff Capashen seems quite strong in this deck. Can't activate planeswalkers on opponents turn but even just being able to Ruinous Blast at instant speed is ridiculous.Also holy crap that was awesome. Vile offering is gross in this deck.

No Seth, you didn’t lose to a modo bug. At minute 46:39 you could have pushed kambal, stopped opponent from gaining life. Fire up Gideon since you had redundant copies, get in for 4 and put pressure on opponent to kill them before they tried to win with approach. That was justice for taking forever to win a game you could have already won.

I'd really like to see an Against the Odds: Rat Colony. But I think Lich's Mastery is definitely more against the odds. So cool. So weird. I can see it going 3-2 for sure. Maybe go white black and you can't lose the game? How would that work?

I won my prerelease by having Jaya karn and oath of teferi on the field so my card draw was crazy and I was burning my opponent and countering them, then I ultimated Jaya recast my wizard lightning and the like

Report last opponent for taking advantage of a bug, corbin hossler had the same thing happen to him. No reason for opponent to play it unless they knew about the bug, because they didn't even try to kill gideon.

Have to watch out for anyone boarding in The Immortal Sun although that's pretty unlikely. I guess Decommission will handle it if Fragmentise and Ruinous Blast don't

Is it really breaking standard if you 5-0'd against some hella janky brews? You didn't face a single Hazoret, Rekindling Phoenix, or Walking Ballista all day.

That's almost certainly not true. Established archetypes are still solid, and probably require minimal adjustments. Mono-red with Hazoret, Bomat Courier, and Earthshaker Kenra is still a top deck. RG monsters with 4-of Phoenix and 4-of Branchwalker is still very solid. For something to "break the format," it would have to be able to take down the titans of the previous standard format. Taking down Saprolings, Lich's Mastery, and Darigaaz ramp is not "breaking the format."

Rekindling Phoenix isn't any better against two Gideon activations or Urza's Ruinous Blast, but fair points. It's also worth mentioning that a lot of people are trying new things right now because of the set release so there's less of the old tier decks than normal.

If you're already in a position where you've resolved a 5-mana enchantment *and* protected a planeswalker for at least one turn, and the turn 1 Llanowar Elves, turn 2 Jadelight Ranger, turn 3 Rekindling Phoenix deck hasn't killed you already, that probably means you've already won the game, regardless of what happens next. I mean, Saprolings of all things took a game off this deck when all they did was cast two cards that made Saprolings and played a single anthem. Now, I think this could be the precursor to a very, very strong UW control deck, but some of the card choices here strike me as too cute. There's also an argument that Urza's Ruinous Blast could be sideboard material against decks that remove threats with enchantments as well, but all of that would need testing.

You need a legendary creature or Planeswalker on the battle field for Urza's Ruinous Blast. I don't think you want to play that many in a U/W control deck. I currently have U/W Approach built with 2 Teferi main. I can see adding maybe a Lyra Dawnbringer or 2 to the sideboard but other than Teferi, Lyra, Seal Away and Syncopate, I don't think the deck needs anything else from Dominaria.

Is amazing that everytime Wizards try to stabilize standard gameplay, they broke it and overcompensate the control side. Is like they do not have any control over the cards they will pop out to the market.

How do you deal in matchups where people actually play creatures. I hate to say it most of these match ups seemed favored with none of them being agianst red green monsters, mono red or even a U/B control.

I'd probably put in a couple more board wipes in this deck, but overall this deck looks incredibly enjoyable. I love me some Superfriends. I still have mine together from RTR+Theros Standard. Nothing like some Jace, Elspeth, Chandra, and Ral Zarek to do some real work, along with Assemble the Legion.

Well, not that Super Friends aren't powerful, but I'm skeptical of this sample: weak decks, bad draws, loose plays. Was this a Friendly League? Watching this kinda turned me off of the concept a little- which I'd probably test as Bant anyway. The Nissas beating down with 5/5 lands sound like one of the best ways to capitalize on Oath of Teferi.

Friendly League and Competitive League are virtually the same. Competitive league does not mean higher skilled players with better decks, it means larger prize pools for degenerate gamblers.

It still introduces needless complexity. Legendary permanent would have been so much easier. The whole trigger keyword is 'legendary'. But wait for it...only for creatures and planeswalkers. Silliness. Even 'non-land legendary permanents' as requirement would have been easier to remember.
