I imagine that the main reason you would use leyline of mutation is the fact that it's potentially free. It's a risk/reward proposition where you either draw it in your opening hand and accelerate your game plan by one turn or pay 1 more mana versus the cost of fist of suns. If your win condition is dropping emracul for 5 mana super early, that one turn could make all the difference.
It's very funny to me that "dies to Doomblade" used to mean something very like "dies to Bolt/Cut Down/Bowmasters" does now because Doomblade was sort of the only game in town so black creatures or prot-black creatures that dodged it became the premium threats.
Omnivorous Flytrap is even worse than it appears on paper… you need MEGAdelirium to get the counter doubling. I can’t imagine that most delirium decks will be built around getting _six_ types in the graveyard. That sounds ridiculously difficult.
Right? You're doing what, Land, Creature, Artifact, Enchantment, Instant, Sorcery? None of those are hard but getting all 6 is hard. You can toss in Planeswalker and Battle cards to your deck in Standard, too, and Kindred (aka Tribal) in some larger formats. If you run 8 types, you're still self-milling a lot to get to 6. Plus self mill decks have other uses for those cards, usually. Maybe if there's some other super sweet mega Delirium cards it'll be worth trying.
11:16, you can build a selesnya deck with a bit of a combo out of Bridle Bill and Kami of whispered hopes. Theoretically, you can get to thousands of power on like turn 5. Bill can repeatedly double the counters, which grows Kami, which makes her tap for immense mana. That's how I learned the limit for floating mana on Arena. It's 2000
@@maplesmagic1509 My bad. Just tested it, its not the limit. Its just the most mana 1 Permanent can produce, in my example Kami. You can float both 2000 of each type and like 12000 of one (numbers untested), but for that you need that many permanents. 1 Kami can produce up to 2000 mana of one color
Leyline of Mutation is a weird design choice. Effectively it means Green doesn’t get a leyline this cycle. The other four colors get one, and then five-color gets Mutation.
I would disagree with this - green is the color of ramp and land tutoring. Almost certainly the decks that run leyline of mutation will be predominantly green - at least more than the decks that run leyline of the void will be black.
@@EllipticalReasoning But mono-green commanders, or rather, any commander that has green but isn't WUBRG, can't use it. So they a missing a leyline this cycle.
Black players in formats other than Standard who have literally never gotten a different leyline other than Leyline of the Void to green players "effectively" not getting a new one despite it being the 3rd mechanically different (arguably 4th with the MKM one) green leyline: "oh wow. That's nuts. I can't even imagine."
I am so excited to use Unholy Lobby in my Tasha, the Witch Queen deck! Her Tokens are demons and because of her lorein dnd(she wrote the Demonomicon), almost all creatures i run are demons. This is perfect!
@6:20 Not gonna play defense, but it _can_ block, it _can_ kill an X/10 on combat. It's a weird, cool card that has nearly as much flavor text as it does rules text. Tastes like a real Magic card.
Here's another neat trick with mind render. After blocks, before damage, cast dress down and smack for 10. Conveniently dress down also protects from bowmasters temporarily
For Commander, I can think to go with Ramos Dragon Engine deck. By removing 5 counters you get double wubrg, enough to cast 2 of any spells, and then for each colour of spell you are adding on another coumter.
I'm really excited to try Mind Render in Commander as it's got so many funny ways to build it. I personally like the idea of stacking the deck with cheap, no threat, low power creatures that can't be blocked or flying (like thopter tokens). Fill the board, drop Mind Render, and keep up counters. Then next turn, slam Dragon Throne of Tarkir (which also adds trample!), Throne on Mind Render, activate, and swing out with the team for the win.
Note that the phyrexian arena room self sustain itself, like the demon is not just a vanilla demon, but that turn it kinda ensures you have a demon to gain 2 life and drain instead of loosing life to the phyrexian arena. Worth considering for commander purposes bcs you'd gonna get a couple of "Free" draws out of it if you unlock the room :)
I see The Mind Renderer as something that you drop as the game ender. Have setup like a Syr Konrad and Bruvac out, then drop this and find a way to start the absurdity.
Mind render with any effect that says "damage can't be prevented" sounds hilarious. There's some other cool cards for pioneer / explorer with this ability like wild slash (1 mana shock) and insult (double the damage).
Everytime I see a ball lightening like card, huge power, 1 toughness, I think of Varolz the Scar-striped, I don't know why it's that card, but a fond combo using Slumbering Dragon and Vexing Devil, with Lotleth Troll for reanimation.
Unholy Lobby with the Black Market Connections is great, you can make the Changling on your upkeep so they would have to kill it on your turn, otherwise you drain them for 2, making the changling only cost you 1 life. Also, if you still have the changeling you can either draw or get a treasure to either gain 1 or break even. All depends on what you need. Btw, you could just DEMONic tutor for a demon with the new demon tutor =p
Green essentially not getting a new Leyline. Classy, WotC. Kinda jazzed about Reluctant Role Model, though. My Arwen, Mortal Queen list has got a spot for it.
My thoughts on Leyline of Mutation ever since it was spoiled was that it would just slot into the LotGP decks since all you really have to do is have some arbor elves, urban sprawls, etc to really accelerate your game plan and since your lands don't matter anymore you can just do crazy things. I think it's gonna make that deck even better since you don't always have to cast that FoS effect. Imagine this: T0 Leyline of the Guildpact T1 Forest, Arbor Elf T2 Forest, Urban Sprawl into Leyline of Mutation T3 literally any of the FoS payoffs lul
Mono blue Voltron mill deck? That 10/1 is super interesting, at least in commander, especially since it says “each” opponent. Really just need to protect from removal and each turn you mill at least 10 cards per turn. However, I would imagine that would draw major hate at a table.
Leyline of mutation may not have an effect until turn 5, but neither does fist of suns. Costing one more to cast fairly probably doesn’t even matter that much for that reason. I could see decks that are trying to cheat Emrakul into play a different way playing a few copies as a backup plan
I don’t think Mind Render is great in Mothman. It’ll combo out with Syr Konrad, but Mothman isn’t usually a deck that’s winning with mill. Milling in chunks of 10 probably means the Mothman wastes counters, and having him get in but not assign commander damage or hurt anyone’s life total seems rough. The mill win seems possible but if someone removes the mind render at the wrong time, you just fall behind. Meanwhile, life loss from rad counters doesn’t trigger it.
This spoiler season is so weird, why were there like no cards at all yesterday but we got half the set a day or two before??? like what's up with that?
Spoiler season is longer this time, being 13 days instead of the usual 9-10 days. They started on a Saturday which was awkward cause we didn’t have any spoilers on Sunday and Monday was Labor Day so we didn’t get many. Tuesday they showed a bunch because of the WeeklyMTG podcast on twitch. Now they’re keeping a slow pace so it lasts the full 13 days. Annoying for sure lol
11:05 when it comes to seeing how many counters you can get on a creature, I've tried it a few times against the bot on arena. I've hit a RIDICULOUS amount of +1/+1 counters on a creature. This was before MH3 came out. The most i see from my screenshots is 1,073,741,823 counters on 16 copies of railway brawler. Pretty sure the game crashes at that point
only seeing the 10/1 that makes you mill insted of taking damage, made me think of a simic deck were you use 4 copies of the mind render and half of the deck are buffs spells.
Valgavoth and "The Mind Render" are 100% best friends. When Crim says he wants to play a Phyrexian Obliterator followed by a Cryptic Command, I REALLY get it now.
1 red mana, 3/3 goblin with Prowess, Menace, Haste, Trample would be perfect. Mono red is a bit slow and weak. Needs to be faster. 21:32 Heeeeere's Johnny!
While I agree that it's not a tier 1 deck. It is, however, a tier 2 decks. Someone just recently won a Moden Challenge with it and deck overall has been putting up solid results in general in Modern.
@@poiri ohh I see. Does that also happen when you sac a creature with a finality counter on it? Is it sacrificed into exile or hit the graveyard cause it was sacrificed and then go to exile?
INB4 Seth (or maybe Saffron Olive... I've never seen them in the same room together) says "AGAINST THE ODDS... we are playing *chuckle* Leyline of Mutation combo in Dandân."
Oh come on. That's such a ridiculously hyperbolic statement for a card that basically just staples together two decades-old designs. I think you may have bought a bit too much clickbait.
@@colinjones5379 it blatantly disregards almost 2 decades of design precedent. It’s completely useless in mono green (not even playable in non-WUBRG commander decks) and it ignores green’s place in the color pie
