The amount of people saying "It's just a Civilization rip-off mixed with XCOM" is hilarious. The Age of Wonders series has had this kind of gameplay for a loooonnngg while.

In AoW3, I always mimicked Warhammer Fantasy by playing human dreadnought. I wonder if I can mimick 40k with this one.

ik it's been one year later but yea kinda. the dvarr units, especially the baron since he's a big lad and not a dwarf or whatever; kinda look like space marines. just put some laser mods on them and badabing badaboom u got mail

Such an excellent take on the Age of Wonders series. Fantasy gets old a little quicker. This game they make each faction original, differing their gameplay style and unit roster. Couldnt be more excited.

Nevermind the expected "it's civilization in space", I also see a lot of "that's xcom"! which surprises me. XCOM, even when reduced to just the tactical combat, is very, very different from this. Here you can see where the enemy is, and it's not guerilla warfare. Yes there's an overwatch mechanics for that faction but the combat is obviously very different from XCOM.

Pretty sure that the only things taken from the newest xcom are small amount of action points (1-3 instead of 30-40) and Overwatch. Everything else is either from the old AoW or new. But the game like this will be judged by similarities to famous games inevitably. Not everybody remembers AoW.

@@DeonGaming action points were also a thing in previous age of wonders. Just the overwatch mechanic and the reintroduction of hit chances look like XCOM (with a better implementation than XCOM IMO)

But in previous Age of Wonders there were also three AP. It's completly the same combat system as in AoW3 and 2.

I know AP were there, I just forgot that there were the same mechanics for movement + attack, I thought it was closer to games like Arcanum where each step consumed X AP. My bad and thanks for correcting!

Actually each step DID consume X AP, but in tactical combat that AP was brackedted into 1/3 action point ranges, so if u had 30 movement points and used only 8, you would have 3 attacks, 2 at 15 movement points and so on.

AoW 1 and 2 predate Endless Legend and XCOM. AoW3 came after nuXcom. My point is, EL did the copying, not the other way around. And just because there's tactical combat, doesn't make it Xcom

Thanks to Paradox for bringing this game to PS4. I left PC gaming for PS4 and this was the only genre I was missing in console. Now my wait is over.

Damn, this is fantastic. Make more informative propaganda videos like this. I like the tactics and the walkers, might play them for that alone. What are the other factions? Apart from the bugs?

Other factions are: Syndicate - traders from the frontiers of the Star Unions, kinda like rogues from AoW 3 - stealth and diplomacy bonuses Assembly - space cyborg-goblin-likes with tentacles, not much more is known I suppose Amazons - genetically altered women with terraforming abilities, lasers and dinosaurs! Dvar - space dwarves with heavy armor, terraforming abilities and explosions

Hate to admit it, but these factions don't sound too bad. Don't get me wrong, AoW is in my top 3, but I have never been a fan of futuristic games, prefer dragons and knights

Been struggling to manage the crappy civ5 multiplayer for years now. So happy paradox is making this! Edit: Not saying civ5 is bad, just that the multiplayer is completely broken with buggs and gamebreaking exploits.

This still looks like how AoW 3 did, just with a Sci-Fi skin. The cities have the same layout, and the hexes are the same. Units are still in small groups, and combat is probably similar to how it's always worked. The bikes are pretty much the new cavalry, and those walkers are probably Tier 3 or 4 units. I just wonder what's going to replace the mana system.

Paradox published a better Simcity, now they are publishing a better Civ: Beyond Earth. Soon the games industry will just be an inferior version of games published by paradox

Tbf both Beyond Earth and Planetall are part of the 4X genre, but there's still a lot of differences between the two games. There are already other space-themed 4X that look much more like Beyond Earth in terms of gameplay and art.

I really do like the concept I saw so far, but I don't get why this is called Age of Wonders? It has nothing to do with the lore. This game can be really good on its own, no need to mix things up just for better sales. You could just say "from the creators of the critically acclaimed Age of Wonders series" and that is it. :)

Running theory that the the collapse of the star union through space storms was caused by shadow demons entering their world. We already know many 'worlds' are interconcected through the 'shadow gates' and that several races are interplanetary travelers. Why limit the contact between magic and technology? We already have the 'dreadnought' faction in a magical world. From the FAQ of the forums: Will there be any connection to classic Age of Wonders games? The metaverse is a pretty big place… ;)

Sadly thought the same about AOW3 but in the end it had some really stupid animations (Carrion birds and bone dragons, ugh). Of course there is always hope they'd give awesome animations to stronger units this time.

AoW3 has tighter animations, these look a bit choppy and unfinished. As long as they can keep up the standards they had in AoW3 it should be good.

I think the animation is a little bit ugly because of speed of fight. Of course you enjoy animation during first 2-5 battles. But then you've got dozens of units on the battlefield and you really don't care about the animation. You want them moving fast and caring your orders. But I hope they improve the animation and create the possibility to buff the speed of fight. As for me, that would be perfect

I've played age of wonders 3 a lot on the fastest combat speed, and it is smoother than this. But this game is still in development, and in development you rush stuff to a workable state so you can test everything before you polish. I'm sure the animations will look better at launch. AoW3 ones look smooth even at full speed. Here there are some sudden stops when units reach their hex that looks particularly jarring.

More like Heroes. AoW was always more combat based than ever. Civ can be enjoyed in other ways, although one can argue that militaristic approach is the easiest because of AI bonuses on high difficulties.

the vanguard encompasses all future military stuff? that is hyperbole, otherwise no faction would have a unit that the vanguard didn't have a copy of. that would give them unparalleled flexibility on the battlefield, for a game that is all about war. given that this is space based level of tech then destroying an entire planet would be an option, and no one could win against them. hopefully the game is expanded upon more so than just being a sci-version of AoW3.

thinly veiled dime a dozen... maybe it's great fun, but it's probably nothing unique. The moment the pretty opening scene lumped into a flat-earth image i figured the hoverplane thingy would land on a hexagon, and it did... those games can be great fun, but the story really serves the mechanics, intead of a good story or setting requiring uniue and fun gameplay to be told right
