I once referred a friend to a job position (because she asked me!) and she didn't even go to the jog interview. Never again!

Not too long ago I referred a family member just to be nice; my agent looked at her as a favor to me and sent her a kind rejection. And then said family member RIPPED into my agent because she was so offended at being turned down... Oh boy it was fun 😂

Do you have an opinion on writing contests, specifically contests where the reward is having your work critiqued by Literary agents or editors? If so, can you make a video on this, please? I’m curious- since many of these contests have entry fees (although most have cash prizes) - if you consider this “paying” for editorial feedback. Would agents participating in this be consider reputable or a “shmagent?”

I mod an author group on Facebook. Mentioned who my agent is in the group and had THREE people queried her claiming it was a personal referral from me. An author sharing their agent name isn’t the same as an author giving you a referral. Don’t do this, y’all. Agents talk to their clients, so if you throw our names around, they are going to check with us. It doesn’t work well.
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 3 года назад
Oh MAN yes that's exactly what I was talking about like. No! Don't do that! It's OK to say "oh hey I heard your client sing your praises" but not ok to say "they referred me."
@RachelBateman

@@AlexaDonne Exactly! Like, drop my name all you want if you’re saying you like my work, but don’t try to claim I sent you! 😂

That was very interesting and reassuring. Now, and I know it's a tall ask, but can you talk about what you know about foreign authors trying to come to the us market. How or if at all should they look for an agent? What if they're published in other language, but hold rights to publish elsewhere?
@SiiKei
@SiiKei 3 года назад
I'm in a similar situation (foreign writer trying to get published in the US/UK market) & I've queried just like everyone else. I've read that most agents are quite open to foreign writers nowadays, since everything is done online anyway.

@@SiiKei That's nice to hear, hope it's going well for you :) It would be super cool if Alexa asked around the agent, author and publishing world about this topic. But of course, this might not apply to a large part of her audience.

I'd also like to know which is better/easier to try to get into--the US or UK market, if you come from another, smaller Anglophone country.

Thank you for this! I've always shied away from the "Your client speaks highly of you" route because I wasn't sure if it was okay, even though that's how I end up adding half the agents I query onto my list. I'm so glad you put that tip in here!

this was super helpful to clarify things! i’ve been a little confused about referrals ever since i started querying and saw the “is this a referral” question on query manager, and your video really cleared things up!!

Wow. I live in the Netherlands where authors send their stuff to publishers directly without an agent, so this seems really complicated to me. Also, I had to laugh when you said people you barely know will tell you to write to their agent but they don't mean it. That's something Dutch people would never say (we're said to be too honest to be polite). Makes it more complicated if I ever wanted to publish my book in an English speaking country. Oh well, let's just start with the Netherlands, where I sent the manuscript to two publishers (after proof readers and all of course) and one of them picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Book is set for release this fall. I think that's also faster than the US timelines? Of course, here there's no way we can live off writing. In the US that's actually a possibility. Pro's and cons.

I wonder if there is a such thing as PUBLISHER referrals. Like a friend helping to bump someone up to the top of their editor's read list.

I’ve been pretty firm of self publishing, but I’m feeling rather romanticized by all of your insights. I’ve always wanted that sort of validation from having a book published traditionally, so I guess it’s not hard to be swayed 😂 BUT thank you for the time you put into sharing your experiences ♥️

Great video! I started querying and I was wondering if you could let me know if you’re supposed to send out a nudge to outstanding queries if you send out a full. Are you supposed to tell agents that haven’t responded to your query before the CNR that you have requests out, or should you not tell them?
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 3 года назад
No, there's no need to notify when you get requests, only if you have an offer of representation on the table.

Based on when I filmed it and eye-balling it, I am probably using Pat McGrath Mothership I and I think I may have added some lavender punch from the Laura Lee Los Angeles Candy Skies palette! PMG is stupid expensive but I've fallen in love with it so I use it in almost every video since January 2021!

It's kind of useless to know their clients since I don't read modern books all the writers I admire is dead Phillip K Dick and George Orwell. I like Alan moore but he wrote comic books.
