Aggressive Horse Rears When Lunged

There are two main problem horses in this videos. The first one struck at me when I asked him to lunge. He is 15 years old gaited horse. I am told he is good under saddle. I saw his sale video and I would not agree. He was very quick and high headed and did not give to the bridle. The second black horse (in the indoor) was aggressive in the stall and to lead and to lunge. When I lunge a horse I do not want him trotting or running around like crazy. I want him to be soft in his face, giving to pressure, following a feel and being able to do nice transitions from a walk to a trot (only when I can have him walk and halt first) and back to a walk. I never need them to canter on the lunge. I do not understand why anyone would ride a horse that will not walk and halt on the lunge line nicely. That being said, you won't ever see me lunging my horse before I ride as I did this when my horses were young and once they get it, the rules are the rules. You can never lunge the energy out of a horse. If he's disrespectful he will still have energy for one more buck, rear etc.

Serious dangerous action requires serious protective reactions. Well done.

Our small mare seems to be getting better slowly. It seems she is just waking up out of some sort of protective zone. She seems to be getting softer and even lets my husband do her back feet. Even though she is pulling back, my husband keeps on holding her hoof (it is possible I guess shes only 12hh) and she calms down again. But of course before she calms down her ears go back first. She loves putting those ears back. That is how we got her. But it is getting less. Yesterday she decided to go back to her old ways a little when we took the halter off in the field. butt towards us so I took the long rope and moved her feet. It was too funny because she ran all around the field. I followed her and everytime I came near her, I made her feet move again. Until she suddenly stopped at the entry gate and looked towards me. Then I went to her slowly, stopped, and asked her to come to me.. she did come to me and I rubbed her face and left. That was the first time that I actually felt like I was making a difference for her....anyway.... your videos help me a lot, so, thank you!

Eden if you decide to buy a horse maybe you could either have Cathy come evaluate in person or FaceTime. Another option would be to ask Cathy to find you a horse. You can always send a video of you riding and what you're planning on doing with the horse. I apologize if I'm talking about a paid service Cathy doesn't offer, but many "trainers" do it and they're definitely NOT the real deal like Cathy is. I can't even remember all of the horses I've gotten into rescue or had to fix problems on back when I trained for the public. Just because the owner wasn't experienced.

@@tracyjohnson5023 I do these evaluations in person, and I will also have people send me videos via email or messenger to evaluate. This service is linked to my website bobcatfarm.com/

It's hard to believe somebody would put a kid on the 2nd horse with those lack of ground manners. Guess they never had to lead him with a rider.

Gaited horses. I rehab a lot of horses and 99% of the gaited ones have no clue what yield to pressure means. They've never been taught to give to bit or back up. Leg pressure means go and that's it. Some don't flat walk under saddle, never mind with a loose rein. Head way up, nose out and they wonder why their gait is messed up. It wasn't always this way. 25 years ago, most horses learned the basics those first 30 days no matter the breed.

I have found this as well.

This is really interesting. The horse in this video is one of my horses exactly. He is 20yo so I never considered he was never taught to properly yield to pressure. I reckon that’s 99% of where his problems come from. Thanks for this thought I think it will help us a lot

Great comment about if you can't lead them don't ride. Check that steering wheel before you get on lol.

As we all know, horses are super expensive to keep, and it just gets more expensive as time goes on (hay prices, feed prices, boarding if you don't have your own place, etc.). People get rid of horses like this and they end up going to auction and in the kill pens. Cathie...you are literally saving their lives. We have to speak "horse" to communicate with them and let them know what we want, what they're allowed to do around us and what will NOT be tolerated. My daughter watched your videos when she was 12 and training her young Welsh pony who was a smart little fresh stinker who totally had her number. She couldn't even lead this pony, couldn't lunge him, etc. He would get close and bite her shoulders, bite her on the back and upper arms while she was leading him. I got her a good training whip and she used the butt end of it to kick him, kicked at him with her leg just like you and also went at him with her teeth just like you. Let. Me. Tell. You. That pony is 8 years old now and a total trail riding genius. He will lead, follow, go in the middle, brave, go over any obstacle, etc. He's good for the farrier, loves to be groomed and has great ground manners. It never would have happened if it wasn't for watching your videos, so thank you!!!

Katie you're absolutely right many horses with these behavior issues end up on the truck to Mexico. I always think about the what ifs for a horse. I have horses I'm planning on keeping forever, but sometimes bumps in the road of life happen and you have to sell one. So I always make sure they have good ground manners, good for farrier, load well in trailer as well as ride well. I do it for me, but also for the horse. They've got a much better chance at a good life that way.
