I have been watching your videos for a long time and you are amazing. After watching and learning and researching prong collars I finally decided to give one a try to help with my dogs random reactivity. The handling I learned from you paired with the collar has been a game changer. She finally understands bc I’m finally able to successfully communicate with her. Our relationship has improved so much, and her behavior is better on and off leash. She’s more relaxed and calm, she’s happier on walks, and I finally have confidence while walking her. Yesterday on our walk she saw a dog she has a history with being aggressive and reactive towards. She looked at the dog, wagged her tail, didn’t lunge or bark like the normally does, and before she could even build I was able to tell her “this way” and she immediately followed me without any leash pressure or correction at all. Last time we encountered this dog, she was in such a frenzy with barking and growling that she nipped me on the leg as I tried to redirect her. That was the moment I knew we had to do something different bc I was worried about that happening again and didn’t want to not be able to walk her. A week ago we got a herm sprenger and I really wish we had gotten it sooner. Thank you Tom ❤️

That’s awesome. I hate that people refuse to educate or even hear the other side and just scream at u saying I’m abusing my dog. Sometimes it’s the only thing that does help change behavior and give a good life to a dog.

You have said Soo many comments that are Key to all of this success …First and Foremost “ Communication” !!! It is Litteraly the KEY to master all issues with dogs! Secondly.. You mentioned that “ Your” confidence went up, and ever since she’s been much more relaxed around you,… this is also another Important factor! You are now “leader” quality and therefore is Looking at You for clear and consistant direction which u are now giving if she is responding the way she is! People don’t realise juuuust how many mixed signals they give their dogs and then wonder Why they have issues w this or that etc etc .. ! Dogs Need Direction and they also “Seek” it! I always say “ You want to Teach a dog what u “ Want” out of it as opposed to what u “Don’t” want … cuz dogs don’t “learn” from Negativity! When they receive Positive feedback, you can be sure they are gonna want to repeat the same behaviour ! It’s up to us to teach them exactly “what” that behaviour is! I always say it takes about 3 days for a dog to Learn a new command and “get” it… The first day you show them and practice .. second day you go over what u learned the day before.. and day three u repeat to ensure the dog got it ! Keep up the good work !

To those of y'all saying Tom needs his own TV show - no he doesn't. I've worked in the TV industry for the last 7 years and a TV deal [unless it's a miracle] would give Tom significantly less control over his style, content and audience interaction. Broadcast media is not cut out for personal touches, authorship and audience curation. Tom has worked really hard at creating this thing we all love so much and I'd hate to see a TV executive or broadcaster try to tell him how to do it. He has autonomy and ownership on RU-vid [although it's not a perfect platform] and we in a way have access to him. Keep being you dude.

And when we approach every situation when the dog is aggressive with the attitude and intent that WE ARE IN CHARGE and send that feeling to the dog of "Good dog, take a break, I've got this and you can relax", it allows the dog to be more comfortable and happy with its place in the pack. This is OUR world. They don't understand it completely and they KNOW they don't have the skills to run the show. (Unless the dog has been successfully feral for some time, lol!, and then they can have a bit of a cocktail "I don't need you to tell me what to do...I do what I want...and I GOT this". I had one of those and I just made it clear that was fine but I was still boss, so take a break....this is MY problem to deal with. Lol

You're production quality just keeps going up! Great video on the ecollar, always love the Lakota clips, and good catch Tom. I just got some swag, your biothane lead, and the ecollar. So glad I was finally able to make a purchase. Love the coat and the ecollar has been a game changer with my now deaf dog. She was offleash (sorta) for the first time in a long time. Only 3 sessions so far cause she sadly is an hour away living with my parents (I couldn't find a dog friendly apartment in my town), but I can already see her getting it. Been teaching her the stim means come to me. It's a slow process but I'm hopeful she'll be a pro by fall and we can enjoy beach walks and light hiking together again with a little more freedom on her part :) Anyway keep up the amazing work you and your team are doing and I can't wait to join the members club again once I'm back to work this fall

Timing and energy are SO key here and Tom really hammers emphasis onthe important details where many go wrong in their training and end up with mediocre results. ✌️💗💗💗 Ty Tom for NOT hoarding the keys to successful dog training just to get clients. Since finding your channel I have learned a lot about dogs with reactivity problems. I myself have one of my own. He's a 1 and a half year old standard American bully. He's attacked our older female dog 3 or 4 times out of the blue.... He's mostly good with her but I don't know what it is he just snaps on her. He's also bitten me before but didn't draw blood. I love him to death.. I've had him since he was 5 weeks old from breeder In North Carolina which I myself live in Massachusetts....I've never had a dog like him before..... your videos are so amazing 👏 Thank you for training to ones who others think are untrainable.... Which in my case I've been told by a local trainer that I could just have a "bad dog" when talking with her over the phone..... GOD bless you and your family

10:20:- EXCELLENT use of Body blocking while Directing in an opposite direction !! For those wondering what I mean by that, if u pause at 10:20, you’ll notice that as the owner is turning around. He is also positioned in a way that allows his entire body to “block” so-to-speak, the dog’s view and that “thing” that he’s focused on, all the while redirecting him at the same time , which is keeping the dog calm as he has to focus on walking alongside his owner as opposed to the distraction! ❤

I wish I would have watched these videos when I had our dog Indy. He was attacked by a neighborhood dog a couple times and became very leash reactive. We did some training with him , but it was more positive only and tried redirecting but with minimal corrections and only on a front no pull harness. If i had used a prong or e collar in think it would have been what he needed. He loved for 12 yrs this way, was a sweetheart with us and our other dog. But we were always fearful on walks or at campgrounds. He passed away last year and we have a new Aussie that we are training with a balanced method including a HS prong and just got A 280C that I am introducing with the low level conditioning. Keep the videos coming!

Tom, What do you do with 2 dogs (in the city) that are running a mile radius of their house & hunting & killing every pet (cats, small dogs, pet rabbits) they can lay mouth on. Chasing them over fences, ripping up cages to get to animals, etc. They are cited with killing at least 20 in the last month. (Bad parents I know.) Any thoughts on whether they can be rehabbed? I hate taking a life, but they have been to my yard twice & killed two of the neighbors cats. Mine just missed getting chomped. Just curious if you had any words of wisdom.

8:31:- SO Many things to unravel here! LOVE how you have the Owner Handle their dog the Entire time for one and have “them” get the hang of things while observing you, Love how, even though I know that you yourself have no problem w having him take treats directly out of your hand, you still, out of respect for the Owners and to ease their own fears, opt to do it the “safe” way , and all the while continuing to have Them handle their own dog! Everything I am seeing is Just 👌👌👌

Always love your ..... methods etc. Just tell/direct the pup without all the prong, shock crap. Just adds confusion for people and dogs when/ how/where so just concentrate on task. Your squeaky voice has increased over time.... talk to dog like a man

My only concern is, in order to correct the behavior & show positive reinforcement is by rewarding him food. Isn't just saying, good boy & some pets good enough?

How do you train the dog to not associate looking at you with the vibration... He would look at you, owners said, 'leave it', (then I assume there was a vibration if he didn't leave it?). How does he not associate the shock with you? Or, is it simply a vibration?

I need some real help. I have a very complicated health condition. One of my conditions is I am a T3c diabetic which is rare, I have no pancreas. I lost it to rare incurable cancer. I make no insulin, no glucagon, no digestive enzymes. My tumor creates mass amounts of different hormones ( like a mad scientist lives inside me) one being insulin ironically. My blood glucose can drop to a low level that my monitor can not even read in a drop of a dime. Without my CGM I could go into a coma or die. We adopted our dog thinking he could be a service dog for me. He ended up not being what we were told he was in breed and size. He did respond to my lows so we took a chance. Problem is when every I give him attention he tries to bite off my sensor or pump. His reaction happens so fast I can’t trust him and can’t let him close. I don’t even know what to look for in a train or how to address this because it is a serious life saving device for I fear risking it so I now I can’t be around him very much. Any tips would be greatly appreciated

I've been watching you on RU-vid for about 2 yrs. I don't have a dog but I watch you to find out what I did wrong. The dog I had was Rhodesian Ridgeback 2 yr old female. I lived with 3 guys at that time. I was following a trainer that believed in dog packs so I was trying to be the dog leader. But the guys I lived with had different type of training. I told them that I was training the dog. I watch you to find out what i did wrong. I saw alot of things wrong. I want another dog someday. When I do I will buy your trainer package.

Chose the wrong dog and breed. This behavior can only be managed. It will never truly go away. It will always be lurking in the shadows ready to go. He would make a great guard/protection dog with enough control put on him.

Dear tom!!! How do I get in contact with Tom? My boys been beefing at home lately but grew up together and I have to keep them separated now but It's hard and stressful... they have structure in their lives and they aren't mean they just stopped liking eachother and would like some help! I watch Tom's videos all the time now and he's the best I've seen with great methods. There's more to the story but I need to get in touch with this guy he's awesome and actually cares about these animals and I love that . Tried Commenting on a video the other day and just haven't been able to get in touch!

So many of his videos he relates dog training to horse training. I love this! As a horse trainer, I was oddly lost and overwhelmed trying to train my HUGE, rambunctious dog. When he relates this training to horses, it makes so much sense to me. Even changing directions, doing a 180 at the walk to get the dog to focus on you, is exactly what we call roll backs with horses. Thank you!

I’ve recently started doing pack walks with my dog and my boyfriend’s two dogs. I have struggled so much keeping them from crisscrossing each other and almost constant pulling from 1 of the dogs, 2 when there’s a bunny or skunk near by. I feel like I’m constantly correcting them and feel so bad about it because I don’t know if any of us are enjoying the walks at this point. Update, walked them again tonight and clipped my biggest pulled to a front ring on a harness and he walked so much better. Most enjoyable walk all week.
@lisat9707
@lisat9707 2 года назад
Wow interesting! Were they wearing a harness before? Clipped to the back i'd assume??? The change might be whats causing greater awareness as to whats going on... just a theory...

@@lisat9707 I’ve always used the harness clipped in the front with that dog; but i had just been using the martingale collar that week, and felt like no matter what he just kept pulling, to the point that corrections weren’t effective. My newest solution to make the walks enjoyable again was that I put him on a shorter leash that I hold onto and put the oldest dog on the second leash around my waist. That has helped because there is was less crisscrossing this way and it’s much easier to fix. He still pulls but at least it’s not effecting my back as much

I love watching your videos. Its like cesar milan but on the next lvl and simplified. I see you often have to say roughly how many times you use the collar.... maybe theres a way to rig somthing to light up at the same time so its a visual signal especially if your training some owners to use it at home. Edit: a double button from some kind of lightup device pressing both at the same time maybe.... like the remotes glued together back to back so easy to squeeze.... just an idea.

very cool dude! Also I think w redirecting like on walks and dog is eyeballing someone, its important for the owner to do the redirection as quickly as possible...ie they must be aware and the second the dog starts the negative behavior there is the redirection.

something people miss about compulsion with dog trainings is that we compel children to brush their teeth, wash their hands, and play nicely. We do so with the expectation that they will happily be clean and happily play with other children. It is kind to the dog to compel certain things, like cooperation at the vets office or politely walking on the leash - because we expect they will be happier dogs if they are healthy and well walked.

Wish you lived in England we have tried so many trainers. Our GDS is good on walks but he's unpredictable , my husband gets up at 4 to take him out so he doesn't see many people, he is reactive, he semi food guards and he does the same with treats, he has bitten me twice is as he seen red but soon after he's trying to I think say sorry. Also no one can get near us as he's very protective we are at our wits end

12:36- If u both walk during peak hours , I would start by taking him for just a quick potty break instead of the usual walk time and try to switch your walk time to an hour or so later/earlier, so u can ease your way into redirecting and once you get the hang of it, then you can go back to your regular walk times as it’s no longer going to be an issue at that point ( at least it shouldn’t be )

Fyi bark collar and constant socializing, that dogs a good dog, you don't need a muzzle unless he's around a trained dog that he might be biting at, which shouldn't be the case so yeah idk lol

Great video Tom. Always learning something. Is there a part two of how this dog is doing at home with strangers coming to the house? I’m in a struggle with that? I have an amstaff thats very high prey drive and stubborn. He whines like he’s getting killed on a walk when he doesn’t get his way. Gotten better on walks thanks to prong collar and e-collar at times. He knows all his commands and knows what he’s supposed to so he is just very stubborn. Also I walk him on a 6’ leash and he always wants to take the lead no latter what. Should I walk him with short leash until he understands? He’s 1 year 3mo old?
