In this episode The Tequila Hombre is going to teach you how to age a blanco tequila at home. So if you have a limited selection of tequilas where you live, you can age a blanco to give you a unique and tasty tequila all your own. Using this method, it's easy, fast and you can turn a blanco tequila into a Repo,Anejo or Extra anejo. To do this project along with the Tequila Hombre, you will need the 2 - 750ML bottles of blanco and the following items:
You will need a 1.5 liter glass jar, an aging spiral, a mesh bag and 2 bottles of cheap blanco like Altos or espolon and any bourbon you want to use to season your wood with if you want it to be similar to bourbon barrel aged.You can also use sherry, brandy or cognac if you want. you will also need a medium sized tupperware like container. You will also need a kitchen scale. Links below for what you should by.

Holy Moly, I didn't even know this was possible! Cool. I'd like to try this with that same Blanco. ( I'm currently searching for it.) This process is reminding me of various hops in beer to guide the flavor profile.
@TheTequilaHombre
@TheTequilaHombre 4 года назад
Kinda different than hops in beer .( I am a homebrewer) but you can use any Blanco don't have to just try to use El Mexicano as it's going to be hard to.find now.

Interesting method you came up with here - it definitely seems easier than having to prep and seal smaller sized barrels companies sell for home aging. I may have to give it a try myself. Cheers
@TheTequilaHombre

It's definitely easier than a barrel and produces better results too! 😁💪👍

Fun idea. Couldn't I also take a mediocre bottle of repo or anejo and age it some more to try improving it rather than keeping it in it's original bottle only to have it take up shelf space?
@TheTequilaHombre
@TheTequilaHombre 4 года назад
You can definitely age a repo or Anejo some more but to do do it in it original.bottle would be difdicult unless you use beyond barrel staves. As they are meant to use this way. I like doing more than one bottle at a time though .

What are your favorite combinations? Im thinking French Oak with a cheap additive-free blanco for maybe 6-8weeks. Thanks for making me aware of this! I cant wait to try it.

Totally going to do this with my brother. Plan to use a Scotch. Need to find El Mexicano. If not (SoCal) local, then I'm sure we can get it online somewhere.

I want to age a Tesoro añejo to be kinda like there extra añejo ?? Considering there extra añejo is sooo light in color what would you think is the best process ?? I would think you wouldn’t want to soak the STAVE in too much bourbon ??? Medium char or light char for the stave ??
@TheTequilaHombre
@TheTequilaHombre 11 месяцев назад
When you buy the stave they are already a #3 toast. Which is perfect flavor wise. Color is going to be darker because its new wood. Age something for a 2-4 weeks first and then use it for a second use to get lighter color and flavor. Or just age it for a week or so, making sure to sample it along the way and have a tequila that tastes similar but will be a little darker.

Thas awesome to age all the spectrum of premium Tequilas, especially if all this flavor is easy to obtain vs the barrel. I was thinking to get a 3 to 5 Litter barrel but since you are doing this best way I would give it a try thank for all the tips great Info Mark
@TheTequilaHombre
@TheTequilaHombre 4 года назад
The barrels are so much work and the wood used in home barrels is not good quality. Using the spirals or staves produces great results and you can use french or American oak and season them in just about anything to get some interesting flavors. I have tried cognac, sherry, bourbon and other whiskeys with great success! Hope you make some great aged tequila! Any questions, please ask.

Really cool! Curious why we would start with a cheap blanco? Wouldn’t starting with a better quality blanco lead to a better repo or añejo?
@TheTequilaHombre
@TheTequilaHombre 4 года назад
You can start with any Blanco. Altos and Espolon are good quality inexpensive blancos that you can experiment with and not worry about wasting expensive blancos of something goes wrong. Once you get it down, then by all means use a better Blanco. I have made some great Anejos with Altos.
@ascosta
@ascosta 4 года назад
Wow! I had no idea you could do that! There's something that wasn't clear to me though... Is this an accelerated aging process? If so, what is the recommended accelerated-to-perceived aging ratio?
@TheTequilaHombre
@TheTequilaHombre 4 года назад
Yes, It is an accelerated process. It ages to an equivalent to an Anejo in about 4 weeks.

Once you’ve aged with that wood. Can you use the wood again? Or is the wood 1 time use?

I have used it more than once but it takes longer.. with each use..

There shouldn’t be any angel share from a oak spiral. If there is it’s barely noticeable. It differed from an actual barrel aging angel share.

@@TheTequilaHombre Another question came to my mind, would you recomend using a higher proof tequila for this project? Or did you do it with a 40/90 proof one? And what happens if I dont soak the spirals in bourbon etc. at all?
@TheTequilaHombre
@TheTequilaHombre 3 года назад
@@christopheralcazar1092 you can use a higher proof. I ha e aged a 110 proof before. You don't have to soak it in bourbon if you don't want to. I just don't to make it like aging in a used bourbon barrel. You can just use the spiral without seasoning it.
@christopheralcazar1092
@christopheralcazar1092 3 года назад
@@TheTequilaHombre thanks a lot for your answer. I know Guillermo at Forataleza chips their barrels out before using them - which would mean that flavors from their barrels used come from the oak and not from the bourbon residuals. Do you have a second video with a follow up to this project?
