But did you know that Agnes Moorehead hated her role on Bewitched? She wasn’t too keen on playing the role but there were some extenuating circumstances that forced her to remain on the show.
But even though she hated this role, Agnes Moorehead loved being an actress. She was born on December 6, 1900, before film and television were even invented! Yet, she would grow up to become one of America’s most renowned actresses.
Her early acting career was unstable, and she would find occasional gigs on stage or on radio. She learned the importance of money management and sought to work even harder to find great roles. As the film industry was growing, she also sought roles in this exciting new medium.
Agnes Moorehead had acted in some of America’s best-known films. Her film debut was in one of one the most-lauded films of all time, Citizen Kane. Her great film roles included work in films such as The Magnificent Ambersons, Government Girl, Our Vines and Tender Grapes, Her Highness, and the Bellboy - among many others.
By the time she was cast as Endora in Bewitched - she had become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Yet she wasn’t pleased about this role and didn’t feel it was one of the best projects she had ever worked on. Nevertheless, she stuck to this role and she received much praise for her performance.
Agnes Moorehead had a rich career in theater, film, television, and radio. She’s remembered as one of the most iconic actresses of her generation. She died on April 30, 1974, at the age of 73.
Let’s learn about Agnes Moorehead’s life and career and why she hated her role on Bewitched…

She never hated the role, she resented the fact that the public quickly forgot her monumental acting career and she became typecast as Endora and rightfully questioned the script of some episodes, other than that, she had a marvelous time.

She was part of the Mercury Theatre. She is a quiet figure. I do admire her very well. Endora rules. Orson Welles had her. Now I have her as a blissful reminder. She is acting royalty. She is so sheerly undersung.

This video has overstated Agnes Moorhead’s “dislike” for her role as Endora. I remember quite clearly her speaking on this topic and what she said was that she preferred making movies of the type she had always been in. She liked the serious and dramatic type pieces she’d been involved with more than the light hearted nature of the television sitcom. She did however craft her Endora character to her liking with script input, her dramatic delivery of lines and the signature hair and makeup was all Agnes. She brought something special to the role and that was why Elizabeth Montgomery wanted her to play it to begin with.

She hated working with Dick who was always drunk and never knew his lines. She was very strict and professional something that the show was not. There was a lot of drama back stage and she refused to talk about it because she never talked about what goes on back stage. She said, this in interviews. The show was very successful but both main actress were not very happy. The show was finally cancel with the main actress left the show.

After hearing about her history I agree that the role was beneath someone of her talent. I love to hear the history of classic actors. She died on my 13th birthday, and I still till to this very day love her as Endora. I recognized her in Citizen Kane but remember her for as much on a tv show I believe was an episode of Twilight Zone or Night Gallery or something very similar. The episode was about her living very far out in the countryside alone with few visitors. Every night she would hear noises coming from the attic but to scared to investigate. Finally, she got her nerve and climbed into the attic to find two tiny men dressed up as astronauts, thinking they were aliens from another planet she killed them both and then then camera view turned going thru the scene in the attic to stop on a small spacecraft the size of a child's toy and on it was a decal saying "United States Air Force". So in actuality she was the alien and where she lived was a alien planet and the two people she killed were visiting from Earth.

You mentioned four mediums that Agnes Moorehead appeared in - Radio, theatre, television and film - but there is also a fifth - animation. Which is not surprising, given her radio experience. She lent her voice to The animated Lone Ranger animated series, starring as a character known as "The Black Widow," as well as "Goose" in Charlotte's Web. On another note, Agnes gave one of her best performances in the Twilight Zone episode "The Invaders," all the more impressive because she didn't say a single world. Her performance demonstrated what a powerful actress she was. One last point. One role I'm certain she wished she had passed on was as John Wayne's mother in "The Conqueror." Not only was the movie lousy, it was also filmed near a site where atomic tests had been conducted about a year before. It's suspected that the radioactive soil contributed to a large number of the cast and crew dying of cancer over the years - including Agnes.

How Dick Cavitt saw her in "Don Juan in Hell" in Nebraska growing up. Charles Laughton entertaining the audience until the sets and costumes arrived late. She talked about her farm in Ohio. She passed away in less than a year. The show is on u tube. You can see what a talk show should be. Not the inane drivel we see from Jimmy Fallon, who is more concerned about doing crap that just says " aren't I cute?". Ms. Moorehead was in the movie The Conqueror. Supposedly the movie was made in St. George, Utah where there was a high concentration of radioactive material in the soil and water. Several of the persons involved with this movie were diagnosed with cancer and died including John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Agnes Moorehead, Pedro Armendariz and director Dick Powell. Supposedly, they were not aware of the radioactive content in the area. This is sad because all of them were fantastic actors.

Agnes Moorhead was a long time and frequently visiting friend of the Robert Montgomerys. Elizabeth grew up calling her "Aunt Agnes". She may not have liked the role, but she did it because 'Lizzy" had asked her to, and probably because at her age, she had use for the money. "Facts Verse" just makes it up as they go along.

Agnes Moorehead appeared numerous times on SUSPENSE, not 'several'. Her performances in the play 'Sorry, Wrong Number' are probably the best remembered of the series. It was repeated SEVEN times during the series' 20 year run. (1942-1962). Six of those were broadcast live. She was so popular that SUSPENSE producers dubbed her 'The First Lady of Suspense'. Her radio work was extensive. Orson Welles company of actors was known as 'The Mercury Theater', not 'The Mercury Players'. She played opposite Welles as the original 'Margo Lane' in THE SHADOW. As per usual 'Facts' Verse' wasn't researched very well.

I can't think of another person who could've played Endora, better than Agnes Moorehead. The way she used an authorative, defiant, or confident way to actually seem like she could cast a spell. I don't think she's ungrateful either for really not liking her role. I find many actors, as herself, that has spent so many years in dramatic studies, those are the roles they prefer, so it's just human nature she felt that way, about that role. I just think it's good to just be remembered, in any role. To have many years passed since their death, and ppl on earth still speak fondly of them, seems to me to send a msg to heaven that this person must have done good, to be fondly remembered. I, for one, everytime I see her on something, I instantly think Endora. I'm sure she appreciated the love she received.✌🏽

May she rest in peace. I was born in the early 60's, I grew up watching Bewitched. As a tiny child the only day of the week I remembered was Wednesday, because that's when Bewitched came on, and the only night I got to stay up past bedtime. Wednesday's Witch night. I loved all of the characters. But always wondered what it would be like to have Endora as a grandmother. We didn't own a color TV until 1979, imagine my surprise to find out Bewitched was filmed in color. If it's on TV I'll still stop and watch it verses some of this newer stuff. Good TV is hard to come by. I guess all of the sensors and moral majority don't exist anymore, too bad, they kept TV safe. I'm as old as the show, and I still enjoy it. The show turns 60 next year, I think only Tabitha is still left, what a lonely anniversary for her. Thank you for the video, I didn't realize how much experience Agnes Morehead had before Bewitched. I do remember seeing some reruns of things and realizing that was her in the other show. She might not have liked her role as Endora, but I sure did. She was very good at it. And what a lovely way to end your career, working on a regular show, weekly paycheck, people loving you for making them happy. And teaching younger actors things that you've learned over a lifetime. Being useful in your golden years, instead of in a nursing home just waiting for the end to be over. She will always be Grandmama to me. Rest in peace 🕊️ dear lady. 👵☮️🖖

Outside of playing Endora her best TV appearance had to be on the Twilight Zone. It was the episode where it appears an older woman in perhaps the 1890's is living in an old farmhouse, alone. She is attacked by what appears to be little aliens. They drive he to the brink of insanity until she finds their space ship and she destroys it. She doesn't speak a word throughout the episode. In the end the ship is shown to be US astronauts, who are destroyed by her, a giant inhabitant of the planet. She should have won an Emmy for this performance.
