AHF Sword and Buckler Nick vs Artur

A friendly sparring bout between Nick Thomas (Black trainers) and Artur Augustyniak (white trainers), who is one of our students. The club does not research and study sword and buckler, running only one off sessions on it every few months. However, we do spar with it fairly regularly utilizing all our other skills from the range of Historical European Martial arts which we do study, the most common being Longsword, Sabre/Backsword and Rapier.
At the end of the fight it appears as if Nick's sword pierces Artur's mask. In fact it merely slipped between the outer rubber rim and got stuck (the mesh being plenty strong enough to protect against this.
The weapons used are near identical feder (historical design training swords) made by the swordsmith Peter Regenyei. We now buy almost all our steel swords from him, The bucklers are a Phil Fraser Steel 16 guage, and a Cold Steel polypropylene one. Both are 12" in diameter (a very common size) and of a similar weight.

Hey Nick! My name's also Nick and I'm from Sonoma in the US. I recently started fencing and have found great joy in watching your videos. I have had great interest in historical combat for many years now and with the discovery of your videos made me realize that I too could swing a great broad sword like my english ancestors. Thanks for making your videos and uploading more! :-)

I REALLY like it when you slow it down to show who hit who and where. It's a bit hard for some of us to see otherwise. LOVE the videos. Keep it up! :D

Thanks. Gear is always improving and there are some really interesting options coming out this year, so that will be updated as we acquire and try new equipment.

SPES historical fencing jackets, we also use PBT historical fencing jackets, Yes, one has quilted shoulders, other rubber cups. Search for our club website and you will find our equipment guide on it with all the kit we use and recommend and where to get it.

Bear in mind that we are practicing for unarmoured combat, as most of the historical fight manuals taught. Our equipment in this video is as light as possible to represent an unarmoured fight whilst keeping the fighters safe. It is not intended as protection against sharp blades.

No there is no right of way rule. In fact most of what is calculated as a scoring hit due to right of way in sport fencing, we would call a double hit and discount and punish for. In terms of scoring, it anything within a single tempo is considering a double hit, unless for some reason the first strike would have stopped the other landing (hard strike to lead arm or head), or if one strike was substantially better than the other. Like a light leg cut compared to a heavy head strike.

There is no sure fire way no. However, the best two things to do is study your opponents body language, and/or begin the fight with caution in strong defensive guards. You can frequently get a basic idea of someones ability just from studying their movement and how they hold themselves, before they even draw a sword. Study their face and tell how aggressive a fighter they might be. Even so, best thing is to just become the best fighter you can be, against a wide range of opponents.

Hello Nikos3000, I have a question to ask: Is there a video showing one of your fighters with a HEMA jacket from PBT? I'm thinking about buying one but would like to see it in action first.

This is often the attitude of someone looking on at a situation from a modern perspective and not considering all aspects. You have to consider with a weapon how it would be to carry everyday, will it interfere using other weapons you carry, can it be brought to bare quickly, does it impede speed and movement, when in use and not. The sword and buckler is like carrying a handgun or shotgun for self defence, great for what it is, but no assault rifle at range.

A few of us fence with smallsword on the odd occasion, but it's not something we study or practice to any great degree. It doesn't have huge appeal to me or many of our members. The only video I have with some in is the Brawling in a Party room. (Which includes smallsword, sabre and rapier).

What kind of torso / body protection are you wearing in this video? It protects the shoulders as well, correct?

i know the buckler or as i like to call it the defensive dinner plate was used in combat, i, with my limited (meaning none) amount of knowledge of swords, or fighting with any kind of weaponry would most definitely not trust my well-being and safety against a sword wielding foe to a "shield" the size of a dinner plate.
