The AHM Rivarossi Krauss Maffei ML-4000. This rebuild will take the existing gear arrangement and use a 24 volt motor vertically mounted in place of the old 3 pole open motor. In this introduction we survey the model and look at the parts and what we have to do.

I retired from the Army about 13 years ago and been modeling since then and I’ve always loved the ML4000 but my skill level is far below a master, lol. I tend to look at older models as a blank canvas to start from and it’s up to the modeler on what they want to improve and detail. I’ve seen some amazing work on many models but I tend to focus on more recent higher quality models we commonly see today. Recently PIKO released an SP ML4000 for $245 w/o sound and $345 w/ sound so I grabbed one, they’ve been selling out quickly since nobody knew they were about to hit the market, Spring Creek said last weekend that their stock of them sold out very fast. So if anyone is looking for an amazing model, buy one now.

That Rivarossi motor with that set screw at the top with the hole in it is a good one ,but many love to over oil it and you know where that goes.Had a few like that and of course run horrible.Took the brushes out and cleaned with 90 percent and resurfaced the commentator with 1000 grit sandpaper wile powered up and all of the sudden like a switch,, turned on it ran great and stayed that way.Put a NCE dcc decoder in it with a home made current keeper and it runs sweet.No stalls or need to add pickups since the capacitors act like a fuel reserve or buffer. Save your 24 volt motor and try this approach .I am doing 2 and draw barring them together so 2 motors and 2 powered trucks that can pull at slow realistic speeds smooth.

I tried every source I could find to get that motor and no luck. the problem with my ML-4000 collection is that 3 of them had the motors removed and another one was spilling the bearings. I did run across a solution when I took apart a Rivarossi E9 that was a more recent edition - it had the old standard AHM motor mounted vertically and it ran amazing. The thing holding me up right now is the worm gear. Once I find a suitable worm that fits the shaft I can fabricate the mount like the E9 and should be in business! I agree that Rivarossi motor is outstanding, too bad it really is a proprietary motor that they stopped making in favor of the simple 3 pole.

Hey was hoping you could answer a question about your DCCC install, I'm a little confused I can see how to isolate the brushes by undoing the grounding strap to the motor can, but the motor still in contact with the one side of the wheel pickups via the way it mounts in the frame. Does this not matter to DCCC, I assumed that it would ground out through the commentator to the shaft through the bearing? Working on making a dual motor version because I'm I like challenges like this

I just received a red box Espee off ebay. The wheel flanges appear to be RP-25 or close. Of course she will get a tear down and cleaning of the gear train. The old Rivarossi motor will remain. Love how they ionize the air with that electrical smell. LOL.

check the wheels, all of mine have pizza cutters - check the motor for tiny steel balls anywhere because they tend to break loose and the motor starts crapping out.... I have found the solution to remotoring these, but it is difficult. the Rivarossi E9 has a vertical motor mount for the standard AHM 3 pole motor. If that can be copied and a worm gear can be found then the FK-130 motor can be installed. these are great runners because they are so heavy, but we'll find a way to make them better!

@@elite194 Thanks for the tip on searching for bearing balls. The flanges on mine are nowhere near as deep as a blue box AHM E-8 I own but not as shallow as Athearn blue box so we can rule out RP-25....LOL. I can't get an accurate reading with the depth finder on my dial caliper so I really don't know where they land. I know Rivarossi reduced flange depth on some locomotives at one point in time. Being post AHM red box Rivarossi, I assumed this is the case. I agree with you on finding a way to make them run better. For mass produced plastic, Rivarossi did a marvelous job with the shell tooling. They compare favorably to brass under the 3 foot rule. The factory bloody nose scheme looks good to boot.

with the super heavy weight most of them have, they really run nice

I've solved the motor problem in theory, but haven't gotten it to work yet, but let me alert you now - save the motors that come with AHM GP18s, they're the same ones from the the Rivarossi E units which has a special cradle that is perfect for the Krausss Maffei. The old 3 pole AHM motor turns out to be awesome when it's vertical.

Part 2 is almost ready...the only thing missing is a plan to get more pickup from these trucks, they've resisted various efforts to get more power out of them.

Just pit a NCE DECODER IN MINE WITH A FEW CAPACITORS FOR a home made current keeper so dont need to add any pickups .Runs smooth as heck on my dirty track and when it is shut down with the lights on they slowly fade/Probably do better with super caps,but these old 25 volt caps out of a old pc power supply wired in parallel did it cheep.The parallel thing is correct from one old wrench to another.Can tell .

Where's part 2?

the ML-4000 hasn't been finished because of the 5/64 shaft with a steel worm on it! that's the holdup! the original motors on all 6 of them have the same problem where these tiny ball bearing leaks and the motor craps out. so the trick is to find a motor with a low enough vertical profile and a 5/64 shaft - there's no such thing, so sometime when I get a moment to work on some of my own projects I intend to make that shaft on the lathe and put it on an M50 motor. the M50 is very powerful and very small, so we might get a winner - also the ML-4000 has extreme pizza cutter wheels!

Talking about motor shaft sizes .Have a old Athearn clone P2K motor measuring 2.37mm. Cannot find flywheel for it that fits.Tried a reduction sleeve using an Athearn flywheel and couldn't get it right. Shaker.Oddball size great motor.By the way how is that Rivarossi motor doing for the KM? Never could get good slow speed torque out of them.Thinking maybe rewinding, and a stronger magnet as a test.Maybe.Ideas??
@elite194
@elite194 4 года назад
If the AHM FM C-Liner project works as expected, then the KM ML-4000s will get the same treatment. If you use a modern motor, flywheels are not necessary at because the sensitivity of the motor is much greater. Some people like them in case of dirty track, but since all my track is coated I don't worry about that any more. A stronger magnet is a strong possibility. After testing the C-Liners, and finding that every version has a different motor mount, I decided that saving the original would be the way to go.

I saw the next video, but it didn't talk about how to vertically mount it on the chassis. I am facing a similar problem on securing the vertical motor with good clearance and replace the worm gear, will you do a video on it? thanks!
@elite194
@elite194 6 лет назад
Yes that video is coming up...mounting the motor is the easy part, but getting more pickup is much harder.

is there a part 2 yet?
@elite194
@elite194 4 года назад
not yet, but the problem has been solved thanks to the FM C-Liner project - the secret to rebuilding this type of vertical motor is extra weight. I should be finishing this one up along with the C-Liner at the same time.

mounting the new motor has proven to be almost impossible - however, recently I rebuilt 2 Rivarossi E9s that have the same drive system but use the normal AHM 3-pole motor. The cradle used to mount them is very interesting in that it would be perfect for the Krauss Maffei. I also solve the power pick-up problem. They will be coming out again this spring to get finished off. They were painted in the Contrast Paint demonstrations and are in full decals just waiting for a motor solution...
