The truth is that Ahsoka's writing problems are usually present in most of Filoni's work. it's just that in animation (and in the childish nature of most of rebels) this is overlooked. The other main problem is that Filoni is not as prepared to handle live action as he is with animation

People get chills over the Anakin scenes not because of a love of star wars, but because of nostalgia and love for the old star wars. Many of us grew up watching Hayden Christensen as Anakin in the prequels, seeing him reprise his role as the chosen one in such a glorious way is why those scenes are the highlight of Ahsoka. I'm glad I watched it, it was alright and I agree with you about everything else, but the *reason* I watched it was because I'd seen spoilers of the Anakin cameos.
@nunouno001

Nostalgia must be one heck of a drug, because I never liked Hayden Christensen as Anakin and I still don’t. Please keep in mind, it wasn’t his fault, it was George Lucas who gave him bad direction and awful dialogue. Hayden did his best, but there was no way to salvage that character. Most of the love Anakin get these days is thanks to Matt Lanter.

Another thing I’ll add that I’ve seen elsewhere. Dave Filoni seems to be the heir to Lucas in that, he has these interesting stories, characters and ideas, BUT leaving him alone to develop stuff doesn’t work out as well as it could. Just like how the prequels had a great overarching story with flashes of greatness, they also had huge issues with dialogue and character growth. Filoni probably has the potential to make one of the best Star Wars series/ films but that is only going to happen if the Disney execs force him to work with some competent writers who can talk him down from the worse aspects of his writing and direction. There’s a reason Clone Wars and Rebels are loved and hated. We love to remember the highs of each show, but we also tend to forget that a lot of the episodes are just flat out bad. That’s fine when you have 80 episodes to work with. It’s a huge gamble with 8 episodes or a single film.

There isn't a single lightsaber fight in the original trilogy that didn't have tremendous consequences for the story and characters. Obi-Wan gets killed, Luke gets his hand chopped off and Vader reveals his identity, Palpatine temps Luke into killing Vader and taking his place... Here in this show it's just used as filler to give the illusion of tension even though we know the characters are scheduled for five more spin-offs or something.

To a lesser amount this IS also true for the prequels: 1) in the only lightsaber Duel (LSD) (Not counting the Brief Exchange between qui gon and Maul ON tatooine) qui gon dies and Obi wann geht's at least promoted to knight for (presumably) Killing the First Sith in a thousand years. 2) in the LSD between dooku and our Heroes He chops anakins Hand of and Managers to escape by forcing Yoda to save our Heroes, WHO arrogantly tried to Take dooku on alone. The war could have Ended at this Point and they would have gotten the death Star Plans If IT wasnt for especially anakins arrogance. 3) the one with the Most LSDs and the biggest implications. The Leaders of the CIS get both killed, showing of Anakin murdering an unarmed (und unhanded) dooku. Windus Duel with palps directly triggers anakins fall. Yoda once again hast the Chance to end this new Empire right ON the Spot, but fails while Obi wans Duel with Anakin cements anakins fall and His new Vader persona.

Thrawns goal was never to kill the heros though, he just wanted to leave. Sure he tried in the initial skirmish, but when Baylan left, Thrawn knew he was over matched. Thrawn isn't scary because he's powerful enough to just kill whoever he wants, he's scary because he's smart, and he only fights what he can win. Two Jedi and a semi-force sensitive Mandolorian are god damn dangerous and he knows that even if he can kill them, the resources he would lose might cripple his chances at the war he actually wants, so instead he wastes their time with tiny forces he can afford to lose. He's not inept, he's just thinking waaay ahead of this show.

spinning in front of your enemy has become a very common thing not just in star wars media but in sword fighting media as well. in the prequels all of the fights were dramatized with spins and turns that are 100% not effective at all. but also in other media such as game of thrones, where characters such as jon snow and arya stark are always spinning in their fights so it looks visually more appealing. i think the choreography was great in terms of visual aesthetic however in terms of practicality, ofc its a bit terrible.

"Decent" should probably be quite a challenging bar to meet. If we posit a 5/10 as "averege", 6/10 and 4/10 as "slightly above/below average", "decent" realistically should be somewhere in the 7/10 or 8/10 territory. And from everything I have seen about Ahsoka, it's nowhere near deserving that level of praise. I feel like *everything* (and everyone involved in the discourse) gets dragged down when we devalue / inflate the concept of quality and achievement. Of course, the same goes for the other extreme. When every new show is the worst thing ever, you get desensitized to these concepts and start thinking "maybe everything isn't as bad, because people are exaggerating anyway". So I think everyone on both sides will ultimately benefit from being more accurate (and genuine) in their criticisms and their choice of words. Ahsoka isn't great, but maybe that's fine. And it's also fine to be disappointed that it isn't better. When you have a track record of critiquing things quite accurately in the 4-6 category, your "decent" will all of a sudden carry a lot more weight and influence. Not to mention even higher scores. I much prefer that way of thinking.

@MoonWeasel23
@MoonWeasel23 7 месяцев назад
I dunno, I personally like the idea that anyone can wield the force, but there are obviously people who are naturally gifted and taught from an early age to use it. We don’t actually know how long Sabine had been training with Ashoka before the show, so for all we know, this isn’t the first time she has tried to actively use the force. For me, Rebels Sabine was just starting to learn about the force when she received the dark saber. I wouldn’t expect her to be pulling objects or anything, but after a long time training I can kind of buy it. I really hope they expand on it more in the future though and make it clear that she isn’t a gifted force user like Ezra or Ashoka.

@@MoonWeasel23 “anyone can wield the force” right here I have a fundamental disagreement; I’m just not a fan of this idea. It makes sense that the force flows through tall living beings but for it to actually be wielded by anyone who trains for 10 or more years is crazy to me. Like imagine if Cad Bane, Watto, or Jabba started using the force with enough training. The term “force-sensitive” literally becomes obsolete, I preferred it when Sabine was just a Mandalorian. @@JCShadow0202 I get that point of view, but from my perspective we have someone like Chirut in Rogue One who is clearly force sensitive but not so much that he is performing the acts traditionally associated with the force. To me it isn't hard to believe that after tens of thousands of years where the Jedi and the Sith are the only people who can wield the force, the rest of the galaxy would just assume that if you aren't exceedingly talented, there is no point of even trying. One the other hand, I was surprised at how powerful they made Sabine for that scene. I figured they would just end it at Sabine pulling the lightsaber, and I think it might be a mistake to give her the powers of a fully fledged Jedi. I do wonder though if there wasn't some extenuating circumstance which helped her out. Maybe Anakin was there as a force ghost? Also, Cad Bane as a force sensitive would be broken as hell, lol.

It was insulting to me as a viewer that Sabine completely ignores/never tells Ezra the details of the situation. We learn she purposely withholds the information that she has only 2 days or whatever to get back to the ship when shes like lets not talk about it when he brings it up. If Ashoka doesnt show up, Im completely led to assume she is just come here to live out her days in this galaxy with no plans of leaving with Ezra. She shows no sense of urgency except in the last episode because the plot needs her to. Such a horrible character.

What utter foolishness in your comment. If you hate what is actually present, that's great, but don't get it so twisted. After finding Ezra, she needed to take it in, after Thrawn now having a means of escape and Ahsoka being dead. You think under that emotional gravity, especially for someone like Sabine, it's that immediate? She's ashamed, worried, can't think of a viable plan, knowing it would likely result in both of them being dead, and didn't want to face the fact that Ezra would know she let him down, somehow waiting for a solution to manifest. This was her low point, a DIRECT ECHO of her low point in Rebels where it would've been all over just the same if Hera and Kanan didn't find her. That's an insane amount of character, and because she has Ahsoka's support near the end, they are able to fulfill their roles in a plan that... nearly succeeds simply due to time. Why do you need to see saints as the characters to the point you'll lose your mind if they're a fraction of being as flawed as you would be in that situation? Remember in Rebels when she made a weapon used to murder and enslave every Mandalorian who rebelled against the Empire? Hundreds, perhaps thousands of Mandalorians died with their blood on her hands. She stood up to the Empire, and for that was unjustly abandoned(Just like Ahsoka did later for no other reason than the possibility that Sabine would apply her anger the wrong way, rather than guiding her). She made the wrong choices, her bounty hunter friend betrayed her, leaving her for dead and could not have expected the situation to be resolved or to survive if not for Hera and Kanan showing up. Just like in Ahsoka. By giving the map, she ACCEPTED the consequences of her actions, and Thrawn escaping is far worse than what anyone in the Republic thinks. It was a gamble, to somehow get Ezra, then escape while sabotaging Thrawn. Who Sabine always is is someone who screws up, and it takes someone else rescuing her to set her straight, and once that happens, she goes all out in correcting her mistakes. The purgill appearing at Seatos signify this was meant to happen, and now the Remnants that had been wreaking havoc and ignored by the Republic will all be unified and reveal themselves, giving the Republic(far superior in force) a chance to wipe them all out.

When i first hear about Ahsoka series i thought they were going to do some Rogue One type of movie to explain why she didn't appear in the original trilogy. Some kind of important assignment that would cost her life or end her arc once and for all. She started as a padawan of anakin, help him grow as a character, help him change his view about the jedi. When she parted from the Jedi Order disappointed with the jedi and Anakin was worried i thought that was the perfect ending. But then she appeared on rebels, start helping the rebels and gets into a life and death situation with Anakin now Darth Vader. That's it. Now she can complete the arc showing how her master is now lost but still showed some emotion in the fight. But, no she is saved once again. BUT TO DO WHAT? What do we want from her?

My main gripe is that Star Wars shows seem to be afraid to kill off major chatacters. The OT killed off Obi-wan, Yoda, Tarkin, Jabba, Vader, Palpatine, etc. The prequels killed a ton of characters, esp in ep 3. Even the sequels killed off some major characters. But Boba Fett show killed only Cad Bane, Mandalorian took 3 seasons to kill anyone of note, Ahsoka killed only Morgan; Marrok wasn't really a character. Andor is the only show that kills a significant amount of the characters it introduces.

1. there are stakes..... Thrawn being unleashed onto the galaxy, and then them being potentially trapped. (Speaking as somebody who ignored everyone and went it without knowing what would happen). 2. Sexism, because female characters aren't allowed to lose limbs or be "ugly." I personally think Sabine should have lost a limb. Only men are allowed to lose limbs and be disfigured. 3. I was honestly expecting Ahsoka to die, or Hyuang to die the entire time. 4. The lightsaber battles are pretty hard to be skilled and stylish when you haven't really fought in a lightsaber battle in years. Honestly watching it, I was expecting them to kill off either Sabine or Ezra, or even Hera. Because it reminded me of Rebels. I think most people see female characters (ehem men because ALL the reviews about Ahsoka the allegedly beloved female character they like to use to shit on any other female character, is finally the LEAD, which they aren't used to, and all the others are leads. I also hate how everyone is screeching about pointless- IT'S A ENTERTAINMENT TELVEVISION SHOW YOU DIMWITT> We all know you just want Darth Vader to unleash his murder boner upon the galaxy and watch women and children murdered by him in a horrible horror fest. Couldn't agree more. It's such a shame, because the cinematography especially was phenomenal, there were so many shots that had my jaw dropping and the music had this refreshing newness to it that I enjoyed, like their use of the organ for Thrawn and they did some pretty cool shit with flutes and cellos. I also think they could have done a bit more with the World Between Worlds concept, but perhaps Filoni is saving that for season 2. Is that what Ballon is looking for, with the clear reference to the Father, Son, and Daughter that are cornerstones of the Force? Perhaps. Hopefully we're going to see some cool conceptual shit down the road.

Like if I lost all of my family and someone said you have the chance to see your best friend, someone who's like a brother to you, in another galaxy at the risk of destroying the one you're in now. I gotta say, I dunno if I wouldn't take that bet. Plus, it's just better when characters make active choices that effect the story as opposed to being moved around by the plot. Active rather than Reactive. But I do agree that she should face consequences.

To be fair, I think the reason Sabine gaining force powers doesn’t sit well with people is primarily from a writing perspective, not the in-universe logic and definitely not any anti-female sentiment. To sum the problem up simply, her resume is way too long. In Rebels, this is her character’s history at the age of ~16 alone: -Born into a Mandalorian household, thus learning their customs, traditions, and trained in their ways -Learns and becomes a proficient artist from her father -Joins the Imperial academy -Is smart enough to create armor-material-targeting Imperial superweapons -Drops out and is shunned by her family -Becomes a bounty hunter -Joins the rebellion and becomes their unofficial(?) propaganda artist -Repairs and designs machinery (including complex shield generators, like the one on Atollon) -Gains the Darksaber and becomes pivotal in the initial reclamation of Mandalore (prior to the Great Purge) However, this was acceptable for the time because she had a character to support it. Aside from the art, she never really openly flaunted these skills & experiences, and even Hera admits she doesn’t open up well with her past. By the time she actually does anything with the Darksaber, we’re all rooting for her. Not because she’s force sensitive to use it, but because of what it means for her, her backstory, and most importantly, her character. She didn’t need to be force-sensitive because she was already so interesting without it. She showed that (though her backstory was nonetheless bloated unnecessarily in some areas) you don’t need the force to be a standout character in the Star Wars galaxy. Giving her this ability flies right in the face of this. It turns her from an albeit bloated but likable character to one almost designed for a fanfiction. It makes it feel like she had to have it for the plot’s sake, not because she herself needed it. Ahsoka and Sabine didn’t even have many scenes together for Rebels, so this “need” for her to become a Jedi feels VERY hollow. Heck, almost all their supposed “history” together was fabricated off-screen just so this show would have this inevitably mishandled master-and-apprentice subplot. Adding it on was not only unnecessary but also highlights other missed opportunities. Considering Shin is practically abandoned on Peridea by Baylan, a good plot line for Ahsoka gaining an apprentice would’ve been for her to convince and take on Shin as one instead of Sabine. This way you don’t have to make Sabine’s resume even longer than needed. Anyways, I hope that clarifies why some people aren’t happy with the idea of Sabine becoming Force sensitive. Thank you for coming to my TEDxTalk.

The only problem that i can see, i'ts the fact that the new republic aristocrats give less than an aching-fawke about literally a number of usurper forces completely the same as a rebel cell like they were back in the empire days. Then in the mandalorian 3, they actually say that there's already ex-imperial people in basically all sectors in the New Republic. Given that this one dissapears in the 7th movie, idc ; but it's still a big joke. Then in ashoka an enterprise man talks with any or barely a litlle bit of fear to a GENERAL (Hera) and says that he's staff it's almost made out of "ex"-imperial people. The joker would rofl about this. The top moments of the series is the martial court, in real life there are already cameras rocording everything that happens. 6 x-wings and the Ghost don't have any? Christ. All that being said, i loved it. (but then again, those "details" are important.

No one thinks "women bad." If anything, they object to the notion that "women cannot be bad or flawed." At this point, you have to be delusional if you don't see that gender/racial politics have negatively impacted these kinds of series and movies. The problem isn't the presence of women, it's that the execution is poor and the products become extremely contrived because gender politics is so highly prioritized to the detriment of things that actually matter for good writing. Supercuts may pretend that his criticisms are totally unrelated to this, but in fact the problems he points out are intimately tied to these issues. For example, the plot armor examples are obviously exacerbated by these politics, because they so desperately want to contort it to a Mary Sue/"strong woman" archetype.
@ThomasRichardson-lj1ig
@ThomasRichardson-lj1ig 7 месяцев назад
Like nearly every major criticism he has of the show is so obviously hugely affected by this: 1) he hates the plot armor. Obviously exacerbated by their need to make women unrealistically powerful and "badass". 2) he likes the antagonists (male) but not the protagonists (female). He points out that the protagonists have uninteresting characters. Ahsoka had "pretentious vibes" and was a "dull figure". He found Sabine "largely annoying, given her selfish and rebellious nature". Wow, who could've predicted this? This is literally what happens all the time when people are politically motivated to write "strong, independent" female characters. Supercuts may think that he is above criticizing this aspect of the show. But it doesn't make him sophisticated -- it just demonstrates his inability at identifying a real and more fundamental issue, which is a major contributor to (if not the source of) many of the things he dislikes about the show.
@nunouno001

This is honesty my biggest problem with Dave Filoni as a creative. He knows how to make functional and serviceable fine products, but lacks the imagination or skill to elevate his writing. Instead, he relies on call backs, references, and general fan service as a crutch to support the show. You can tell that he knows and loves Star Wars, but because of that he doesn’t take risks to explore new territory or push the boundaries of what Star Wars can be. Even the Clone Wars, as good as it is, still relies on the prequels to provide a framework and foundation to tell its own stories. Dave Filoni sadly isn’t much of a creator, he’s more of a creative plastic surgeon whose been working on fixing the prequels for the past 10 years and now he has to fix the sequels. Compare this to Andor, which has the guts to show us stuff about Star Wars that we’ve never seen before. Outside of Mon Mothma, we don’t need to know anything about the rest of the franchise to understand the story of Andor.

Add to that fixing the sequels is a much more harder, i would even say impossible, thing to do than with the prequels. Because at least the prequels, save for some minor details, respected the originals, the sequels spat on them and led to a very underwhelming (to say the least and being very generous) conclusion.

We don't have the same definition fo decent. Squid Game is a decent show. Really interesting characters, some great episodes, some not so great inclusions that drag the show down. Ahsoka? No stakes, no character, barely any story, a huge waste of time, plot contrivance, plot armor and plot holes everywhere. Blatant key jangling. Savine survived the wound that killed Qui Gon, Ahsoka used lightsabers against battleships that conviniently forgot that they could stay stationary and don´t get me started on that world between worlds fanservice mess. This show is both painfully bad and painfully boring paded with insane levels of filler and dragged shots. "Decent" is a 5/10 not a 2/10

Half of those things are in the show were shown for the long term but you have a goldfish mentality so I’m not shocked.

The choreography was just so.. I'm just gonna call it straight up, bad. There is few fights I genuinely enjoyed.

Excellent review as always! I thought the show was alright, but one thing I thought could have been improved upon, was some of the acting performances - especially Sabine, but also Ashoka herself didn't quite convince imo

It actually surprised me how bland Sabine was. I don't mean character even, but she should be decked out in literal blothches of paint and colour and motives on her clothes, hair and armour.

After watching Andor I knew that that level of writing, dialogue, character/world building, and acting would disappear with the upcoming series. Mando S3 was disappointing and Ahsoka was just as bad. The callbacks and fan service felt forced/unnecessary and as much as I like Prequel nostalgia, that is all it was; nostalgia. Also, why was the acting so bad here. I know that Rosario Dawson can act, so what happened? And why did Sabine feel like a boring version of Negasonic Teenage Warhead? I want to like Star Wars again, but man is it rough to sit down and watch these shows.

The plot was decent and the villains were cool but it was executed very poorly imo. The way they filled time was terrible

I think that the lightsaber fights were pretty decent in the first half (barring the goofy scene of ahsoka fighting on the wing of the ship), but they seriously dropped in quality after episode 4. They have a stunt coordinator who knows her shit working with them but I think Rosario in particular needed to be trained more because she looked really stiff (granted she's in her 40s but still Ahsoka is supposed to be agile). Agree with the lack of stakes, peculiar editing and bad writing, in fact I think that with small tweaks to emphasize the stakes, it could've been a really good show. Sabine not facing any consequences really stinks and while I don't mind her character she really weighs down the show, it certainly would've helped to expand more on why Ahsoka left her instead of a small line from Huyang. Ahsoka was just fine, I do wish they emphasized her arc more because it's subtle to the point where it feels almost non-existent. Ezra was perfectly casted and Kevin Kiner KILLED the scoring. The only concession I make for this show is that it may have been slap-dash edited after Ray's passing to preserve some mystery for the character, and that the budget was working against them (the show looks great in some aspects but made for tv in others). I'd give it a 6.5/10, I hope that they hire more experienced writers for the second season.

I think it's terrible, and the droid had more personality than anyone else. I don't blame the actors, I blame the writing. I can't think of a single thing I actually enjoyed in the show. I came into it with a really honest attempt to enjoy it.

And when he got to other galaxy, he kinda forgot about that? He even turned away from the fight with Ezra. That was the perfect moment to kill Sabine, give Ahsoka much needed character growth, raise the stakes and make Baylan more controversial.

To me, it felt like the only good thing about the show was star wars IP. Remove it and there is no reason to watch it, you know no one will die... no matter the scene (like Star destroyer bombing the riders on the surface)

I actually felt bad for our villains lol. They bombard our sheroes blank with naval gunfire. Our sheroes survive without a scratch. One of the antagonists impales a main character....our main character survives with just a cigar burn to show for it 😂

This review perfectly captures what I thought on the show I love Dave Filoni and for his first time taking on his own show in live action it did ok. But honestly I rather him turn this into a animated series. I think we need to keep movies live action and tv shows in animation honestly. Its just you aren't as limited with animation. Kenobi and Boba proved that they went cheap on the budget. I would have rather seen all shows in a high quality animation form

Agreed. People are bashing Dave now after one mediocre project, but considering he doesn't have much experience in live-action, this isn't bad. I really hope he gets a team of more experienced writers to help him out in the future, because if you removed all the major problems with this show, it would have been awesome. The story and concepts were great, the execution was not.
