It's no secret Disney Star Wars has been a but of a mess for a while now. The Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi have all been not great. Many of us truly feel that Star Wars is dying and that Disney Star Wars is broken. In a galaxy not so far away, the highly anticipated Ahsoka show has arrived on Disney+, but the force of disappointment is strong with this one. So far, Ahsoka is not great...
🚀 Uninspiring Direction:
It's no secret that Dave Filoni is a Star Wars legend, but his transition to directing hasn't been as smooth as a podracer. The Ahsoka show's pacing and character development have left fans yearning for the excitement and depth that once defined the franchise. Yes, this is the most cinematic show that isn't Andor we've gotten, but that's a pretty low bar to clear. We'll break down how Filoni's directorial choices might be contributing to the show's lack of spark.
🎨 Dull Visual Aesthetic:
From the sprawling landscapes of Tatooine to the bustling cities of Coruscant, Star Wars has always captured our imaginations with its vibrant and diverse worlds. However, the Ahsoka show's visual aesthetic feels as rigid as carbonite. We'll discuss how the choice of visuals might be impacting the overall engagement and appeal of the series. Plain and simple, Ahsoka continues the Disney Star Wars trend of bad vfx due to an overall lack of style, colors, interesting cinematography, and an overreliance on the volume.
🌀 Identity Crisis:
One of the biggest lightsaber-sized issues the Ahsoka show faces is its identity crisis. Trying to appease Star Wars Rebels fans while also attracting a broader audience has left the show feeling like it's caught in a tractor beam. We'll explore how this tug-of-war between continuity and accessibility has affected the show's narrative and character arcs. And I say this as someone who watched and loved Star Wars Rebels!
🌌 Finding Balance:
Can the Ahsoka show ever truly find its place in the Star Wars universe? Is there a way for it to recapture the magic of the original trilogy while also exploring new horizons? We'll dive into potential solutions and offer insights into how the show could navigate its course to regain the trust of disappointed fans.
Join us as we analyze and review the Ahsoka show's rocky beginning, its connections to lackluster predecessors, and its struggle to find its identity in a galaxy of high expectations. Griffin (@griffschiller) gives you his Ahsoka review and explains why Ahsoka is bad, the huge problem with Ahsoka, why Ahsoka is off to a bad start, why ahsoka is a disappointment, and why Ahsoka is not great. Enjoy this Ahsoka explained and Ahsoka analysis!

🎞 About Ahsoka 🎞
Ahsoka, also known as Star Wars: Ahsoka, is an American television miniseries created and written by Dave Filoni for Disney+. It is part of the Star Wars franchise and a spin-off from the series The Mandalorian, taking place in the same timeframe as that series and its other interconnected spin-offs after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983), while also serving as a continuation to the animated series Star Wars Rebels. The series follows Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to the galaxy following the fall of the Empire.

I agree with the needless point of watching Ahsoka turn three pillars. But as someone who loves Andor how can you say that when watching anything Syril related exists in that show. Do we really need to watch Syril eat with his mother, or move in with his mom, god damn it was mind numbingly boring
@foujiz

@@paxsondavies1575 But those scenes are VITAL to the character's development. In such short scenes, you understand perfectly why he became the person he is. It's incredible directing and writing. Without those scenes, Syril becomes someone with a lot less personality and reasons for what he does. Those scenes were some of the best of the show character wise!

I'm with you on pace. I like slow pace. I think taking time to develop character or slow burning a feel is not what we're seeing here. It's slow cuts in dialogue. Its not wayching them walk away with a beautiful blocking and a reminder that those steps carry weight and move the subject closer to something big. We're just seeing a couple seconds of someone walking.

You said it yourself Ahsoka has abandonment issues and a whole lot of trauma I think her stoicism makes sense and was done purposeful. Since we know Anakin is showing up I’m pretty sure that’s what gonna make her lighten up and have a bit of Snips come back
@xemi2087
@xemi2087 9 месяцев назад
Exactly. While I get people's disappointment in not seeing our beloved snips as we grew to love her on screen, this is character writing *and it makes sense.* It's not even a conclusion we have to come to ourselves, it's right there as Ahsoka expresses her worries about Grogu coming off his path (just like Anakin) and her guilt over leaving Sabine (as she did with Anakin). I feel like Ahsoka often supresses her feelings in regards to her past, we already saw that in Rebels, even when she knew who Vader was..she didn't tell anyone. And she just let it eat her up inside until she had to face Vader and the realization that she *is* right about him. It's all been building up towards it and in the trailer she literally says "I'm not here to talk about my past". So it will definitely be adressed and there'll surely be payoff. *_Edit_* To go even further: Not only is her guilt being adressed but her lack of trust in herself which was a theme with young Ahsoka (when Padme told her she'll learn to trust in herself and when Ahsoka ultimately said she didn't know how to trust herself when the jedi council couldn't). + her guilt over surviving order 66 when she didn't feel she deserved it contrary to many others, feeling unworthy of using the force "when she's not a jedi" and left them (to die basically..in her mind anyway)
@FuzzehBear101
@FuzzehBear101 9 месяцев назад
I have struggled with depression and while I definitely feel like in those times I became withdrawn and a lot less energetic in my character I didn’t become completely stone dead. Having the occasional snark from Ashoka would go so far to help fans remember that the character we once knew is there. To me Ashoka isn’t Ashoka she’s just someone wearing her skin.

To those who haven't seen Star Wars Rebels, I loved the first two episodes of Ahsoka. Don't get me wrong it had a great introduction to Baylan and Shin as well as an reintroduction to Sabine and Hera. It felt cinematic to witness the aftermath of Rebels. Sabine stole the show. When she heard the recording of Ezra, It was great to see old friends especially after he defeated Thrawn. It felt like Ezra was still there. The connection between Ahsoka and Sabine felt real as it's two Jedi walking away from each other but figuring out why they needed to find Ezra and Thrawn was a pivotal part. Hopefully the series goes as planned. I'm sure we'll see Anakin/Vader again and hopefully Rex as well. "This is where the fun begins" once again.

@@steelie2010this is honestly the only problem I had. Her entire character arc kinda went the same way as obi wan when talking about fighting - they start out loving it, sub consciously believing that it’s the point of being a Jedi because of the war they’re fighting in, but then slowly stops and realizes that Jedi are peacekeepers. After that they start being willing, not to fight, but to end the conflict, in whatever way seems fit. You see it with obi wan when fighting Maul on Tatooine and Vader on the Death Star, and you see it with Ahsoka in tales of the Jedi and when trying to speak Vader/Anakin out of doing whatever he’s doing, instead of simply fighting. She’s no longer a soldier, she’s a Jedi (in all but name). Then this show comes a long and it feels like we’re back to season 2 Ahsoka who loves to fight and doesn’t care about just being a peacekeeper… other than that tho, I totally loved the first two episodes. All the small nods to clone wars and rebels were amazing, and while the plot didn’t move a lot, I loved it as a starting point/setup for the show!

As someone who's seen all of Rebels twice through I think I can say that if you are a Star Wars fan that didn't see that show Ahsoka might come off as a bit weird at first. I actually really liked the start, by no means was it perfect. You could clearly tell there was a bit of a weird adjustment with it being live action as opposed to animated with the original Rebels show. The pace was off at times and I think the directing could've been better for actors in certain scenes. Yes I know everyone is ticked off with the lightsaber stab but hey what can you do lightsabers in Star Wars have never been consistent and yes that even goes back to the original trilogy. I think this show could lead up to a great end so I am optimistic right now. I just really want to see Thrawn come in and then my boys Zeb and Ezra return with the crew back together.🙏

One thing I’d like to mention about Stevenson’s performance in episode one is his control during the prison break. As an audience, we’ve seen hallway fights like the one shown in this episode. Darth Vader, Maul and even Luke Skywalker have torn through the cannon fodder but each one was different in some way. It’s no different here. The easiest comparison to make would be Darth Vader vs Baylan. In Vader, we can see his rage and power as his blocks swiftly arc into the next. Baylan, on the other hand, is more composed and refined in his movements. It’s a key difference that informs audiences about the characters. One is a powerful ruthless demon and the other is a precise warrior with purpose. Then again, this is just an observation

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes. The slower pace didn't bother me, I get that the time could have been used more efficiently but I think it's a huge leap away from the rushed pacing most other Disney-era Star Wars productions tend towards. That edited fight scene was seriously legit though; I tend to favor animated Star Wars since the medium does a better job at portraying supernatural abilities. I never knew how good live-action lightsaber duels could be with a bit of post-editing.

@conradrosgaard3481
@conradrosgaard3481 9 месяцев назад
I wouldn’t say there’s no fan service, but definitely not enough to ruin the show and only really fan service if you care a lot about Star Wars. The droid at the start was reminiscent of the scene with Maul’s probe droid in TPM, Sabine’s haircut “ritual” was the same as Kanan’s, the “ending” of episode two (like the second to last scene) was the same as the ending of rebels (though I’d say this wasn’t really fan service, just anchoring the two shows timeline together) etc. It’s very implicit fan service, it doesn’t ruin the episodes, and most people most likely wouldn’t even notice it. But for the once like me who did, it’s fucking amazing lol

I know star wars is awesome and amazing but I think if SW fans were fans of storytelling first, or even cinema, they'd never say that Filoni is creative. If I removed everything that Lucas created from a Filoni lead script I'd be empty handed. I'm not saying that he should create more contraptions for the universe I'm just saying that there isn't anything he has added to the story that is unique. Even with all the ideas that make star wars he doesn't seem to have a storytelling philosophy on emotional traction (we seriously watched 40min of solving puzzles), or a cinematic philosophy on how to sell a scene (those Lightsaber fights were almost as bad as the ST). Sure the opening was awesome but it was something I saw several times before, There was really nothing new about it (like the Vader scene at the end of Rogue One).

Rebels fan here. I really liked the first two episodes of Ahsoka. It was fun to see the live action version of these characters. I really like the inclusion of the dark jedi and the fight scenes have been great. They are setting up some really great things by pulling ever so carefully from the Star Wars extended universe lore. I'm really excited about where this season is going.

I don't see how a series doing well, even reasonably well, among fans as "off to a rough start" because of any particular individual's reaction to it. It isn't necessary to see Rebels or an Ahsoka recap to understand it. It enhances it. It's fun to grasp parts you might miss. But it isn't dependant on it. And that's an aside from the fact that not every Star Wars property needs to be specifically crafted to bring in new fans. We have so many other Star Wars properties that can do that, the films notwithstanding. A single project can be target fandom, even if thought that's not what this series does. It's just doesn't ignore the past as if it's a thing that will confuse people if they learn a new thing then didn't know before.

It's funny cuz while watching the first 2 episodes, i was thinking "Great ! At last, a series that takes its time and doesn't rush into action !" I feel like all Disney star wars projects have been fast paced action packed stories. And it felt good to finally have the time to take a break and focus on character developpement. But i havent seen rebels so maybe that's why i get this feeling, idk ! However i agree with you, the lightsaber duels aren't very dynamic, that's a shame. Filoni's gotta improve his directing skills. Well, this series sure is good practice for him before a star wars movie !

Disney and Kathleen Kennedy have broken the number one rule of opening a new series... The first episode (and second, in this case) MUST grab you and make you wish that you could watch episode #3 immediately. If you loose the interest of your viewers and fan base in the first few episodes, then you can expect to have a pretty high drop out rate. And the reviews of those who watched the first couple of episodes does not bode well for the continuance of season two.

I enjoyed the first two episodes and disagree about them dragging - they flew by for me. I think Rosario Dawson plays her well and was a good casting choice, but she seems to be too short for Ahsoka, or maybe just not lanky enough. It throws things off for me a little, particularly the saber duals and her interactions with Hera and Sabine, as the scale is off. Ahsoka is one of my favorite characters, and has my favorite fighting style out of all the sabre wielders - incredibly fast and fluid with her motions, but also very graceful. Dawson does a commendable job, but Feloni hasn't really captured the essence of her style. Again, just a nitpick, but the fact that fanboys are altering fight scenes to make them more compelling tells me I'm on to something.
