Ahsoka's Finale is DISAPPOINTING. Subpar writing, poor pacing and weak characterisation leaves this Star Wars show going out with a wimper and not a bang... Check out my in-depth review.

I can see this opinion is quite controversial - but I wish it ended on a better note. Overall though, I'm really happy we got so many awesome moments in Ahsoka. And it's a step in a good direction for Disney/Lucasfilm! Let me know your thoughts about the show and the finale below! Come follow me on Twitter! - twitter.com/100PerStarWars

Ah I'm sorry people made you feel like this is controversial, resist the gaslighting! This show had a ton of issues from the start, which I think was due to letting Filoni do exactly what he wanted without any criticism. For Season 2 I hope Filoni has the humility to have co-writers and co-directors to help him, and then I think his work will be better. If he refuses to get help, well, I think we're in for the same fare.

I think that a good solution to the whole part about Thrawn not doing the optimal thing would be to make it so that they were still bringing the cargo to the Chimaera, and create some tension between Thrawn wanting to lift the ship and depart, and the three Great Mothers insisting on bringing every single box to the ship, refusing to go otherwise.
@eds1942
@eds1942 11 месяцев назад
Or by Thrawn already having his people and fallen aboard, but with the Night Sister mothers insisting that they needed more time to complete their rituals which could only be done there, while Thrawn’s crew needed more time to finish the repairs needed to get his Star destroyer both space worthy and up into orbit, since he needed to wait for Morgan to arrive the right parts and technicians, and maybe some device that the Mothers needed to complete their ritual. Meanwhile Thrawn had an elite squad and a Night Sister out just to slow Ahsoka and their team down by harassing them, rather than by openly engaging them.

I really think they should have just done another seasons of Rebels. And by that I also mean animated. The bad batch looks great, that technology has come a long way since the first season of the Clone Wars. I think by going with animation they could have done a real season of say 15-18 episodes. Not the 8 short episodes that we got.

He was introduced as a genius and a threat in a way that undermined him, because they did it backwards. In the old Thrawn novels, Thrawn was essentially an unknown that nobody was prepared to deal with. They gave him a series of military victories against the New Republic’s best, while the heroes were off doing other things. Meanwhile, they showcased how Thrawn was able to win by his deductive reasoning and his fascination with his opponent’s cultural influences. They had Thrawn slowly reveal his plans for us, while the heroes spent their time trying to gain intel. Thrawn didn’t trust any Force user because they were wildcards capable of the impossible, without precautions. And so, he found ways to stall and distract them and pitted them against each other, and with shielding against them. He strung his Force user ally along for good measure so that they won’t completely turn against himself, as they needed him as much as they believed that Thrawn needed them. Meanwhile, nobody knew how to deal with Thrawn, since they didn’t know exactly who he was, what he was doing, or were well positioned to take him out or what his next plans and grand plan were. And he was only stopped by the unexpected after a series of his major victories pushed the New Republic to near the breaking point. while the Force users were tied up out of the way. And all the while, everyone was glade that the bulk of the Imperial Remnant sat back. What Filoni and his team are doing with Ahsoka is the opposite of that. Rather than the New Republic fleet being.split up trying to stabilize their territories and so couldn’t commit to a new war. In Ahsoka, they have a war fleet just hanging around presumably in anticipation of a major threat like Thrawn. The team that they have dealing with Thrawn, already know him, have experience with him style, they are half Jedi, who have been shown in another earlier series’ to have a neck for foiling his plans, and Thrawn, himself. And that team’s goal is just to get to him to either stop his return or to finish off Thrawn for good. As for Thrawn and his distrust of Force users except as useful distractions? He immediately sent out the two Dark Jedi who chose to help him, and whom probably understood that Thrawn just wanted them gone,.. while also his plans are completely dependent on his Force using allies (who are mostly unknown and whom most likely have their own agenda) without any precautions. And why did Thrawn need to wait for Morgan to arrive before he started to load his Death Troopers? Which the team doesn’t seem to interested in, beyond the ones that they needed to cut down to get to Thrawn’s ship for a ride home and to get to Thrawn himself. And the Death Troopers effectively just amounts to Thrawn having more Storm Troopers than he has. It’s just backwards.

I don’t have a problem with her using the Force, it just feels cheap and waters her character down. In Rebels, she felt like Han Solo. As in, everyone has Force Potential, but for some people it is so minute it manifests in things that seem like “luck” or being the best pilot in the Galaxy. It made it feel like normal people were still special even though they couldn’t lift rocks or mind trick people. Sabine felt like more of a badass without her Jedi handicap.
@Miles614
@Miles614 11 месяцев назад
I respect your assessment but I do disagree. I feel there are many reasons that could explain issues you had with the story. Something simple like your first point, maybe Thrawn’s destroyer was unable to make orbit on its own power with its crippled engines.
@Kyfas7

In that case they should have said so in the show instead of making fans write the story for them.
@Miles614
@Miles614 11 месяцев назад
@@Kyfas7 I get your point and it’s totally valid but if I take the exact opposite stance I would say the massive engines of the star destroyer being almost completely dismantled told the story. It should not have to be written out if you can visibly see they cannot be powered on.
@Kyfas7
@Kyfas7 11 месяцев назад
@@Miles614 Did they really tell the story though? Well they could have if there wasn’t a huge contradiction: the ship was flying. It arrived flying and it remained afloat the entire time. Now I don’t know if they needed the ring to get to space, but they could fly the ship to safety if they wanted.
@Miles614
@Miles614 11 месяцев назад
@@Kyfas7 well my argument is admittedly an assumption but if lore is taken into account then it’s all but confirmed that a star destroyer cannot loose any engines and still leave atmosphere. The ship being afloat is nothing special as the engines in Star Wars do not perform that job anyway. The repulser lifts do that task.
@Kyfas7
@Kyfas7 11 месяцев назад
@@Miles614 And it could be just that, but they should have made that clear. And because they didn't make that clear we cannot be sure that was the problem either, just assume. I didn't know about the engines on star destroyers and I bet most people don't either. That is one of many examples of things that don't get an explanation in this series and it will depend of how much lore each one consumes (some of it a bit obscure). People that don't watch Filoni's animated shows will be confused most of the time watching this. Sometimes I wonder if he assumes everyone has watched his shows like it's the most obvious thing to have done...

What a train wreck.... How can something with 6 decent episodes of build up fall apart so spectacularly in the last 2 episodes? I was all in till the shit that was EP 7. Every character has no clear motives other than Thrawn. And even he behaves like an idiot instead of a genius mastermind he is supposed to be. I give this episode a 6\10 but the whole show is now a 5 for me. Filoni has failed big time and the whole show just feels like an excuse to have that moment of Anakin and Ahsoka together. Everything else is senseless and meaningless. This was very telling in the last 10 mins of the last episode. Almost like they were saying "this is what we left on the cutting room floor but didn't have the budget to execute, but give us a good rating so we can try again in season 2!" No thanks... I am sick of mediocrity. Is it so much to ask to get a good season 1 before we even think about season 2? Like, what did I just watch? If you can't do proper set ups and pay of in the first season, what makes you think that I will stick around or want a season 2? This show had to be nothing short of amazing to bring Starwars back on track and it's struggling just to be good. Poor Ray acting his heart out with no real material to work with. I'm glad it's over.

Sabine and Hera facing no consequences is lame. The charge to the tower is very stupid to a comedic extent. Balen and Shin not really getting anything from the finale was weird. Having the decision to show Ezra reunite with Hera later on kills any potential tension that could be had from him navigating an imperial ship with 3 force sensitive Nightsisters that could sense him. Episode 6 was the only episode in this show I actually liked because it introduced Thrawn well, revealed Baylen's motivations (even if they're kinda Kreia derivative), and made me like a moment with Ezra in it for the first time.

@ArdysLoreLibrary
@ArdysLoreLibrary 10 месяцев назад
About the Chimera: The in-atmosphere flight was possible, because of repulsor lifts. Anti-gravity generators that allow vehicles to fly through a magnet effect and these things are responsible for preventing the badly damaged Chimera fall into Minas Tirith. However, it's impossible to leave a planet with just a repulsor lift. And looking at the engines of the Chimera those aren't a great help either. The Eye of Sion had to fly into the atmosphere, because the Chimera was unable to leave the gravity well. With that said, there is no reason why he stayed on his vulnerable position.
@PapitoQinn
@PapitoQinn 11 месяцев назад
It was odd to me too. The moment they told Thrawn that the cargo is ready I was like: "Alright... Let's go." Could the ship not break atmosphere anymore without the ring? Was it too damaged? Has it been hovering planet side for years? I Guess so. Then we got turtle people. Why were they sticking around with them for so long? It's not like anyone cares about them. Thrawn certainly doesn't. In fact, their starship hovering over them is what made the turtle people a target and put them in danger. If they really wanted to protect them, then leave them alone. Besides you're about to jump a couple of million light-years away from them, which was the plan all along. A plan that only Ezra succeeds in. I didn't think about it until you said it, but he was just happy to be back. Ahsoka? Sabine? Who that? As long as I got my bitch ass back home. It was a 2 for 1 trade. A massive net loss because Thrawn is back now too.

I think the main problem with this show is the mismatch in abilities between protagonist and antagonist. In my opinion the best Thrawn novels are where he plays the protagonist. He can then fight agaisnt the odds and fully showcase his abilities. Unfortunately, this is the role that the Jedi hero character typically takes, albeit with very different resources. Also, in this series, Thrawn has to use his military assets to fight Jedi. This is a mismatch in scale and quantity, in order for there to be a fight. And you basically know that a laserturret or stormtrooper will never take down a Jedi... This mismatch in scale also forces the writers to put their characters in very awkward unnatural positions. Additionally, Thrawn is known to checkmate his opponent before the encounter even begins. And given the setting of this series, that is is not something he can do consistently. I hope they will put Thrawn in an underdog position in the second season. Doing that would honor both the integrity of the character and the universe. It would also make for an interesting story. At the same time that will probably necessitate for the New Republic and Jedi to appear somewhat inept. But that is only natural given the circumstances. I just hope they don't dumb it down too much. Like you, I was not impressed by the Thrawn of the first season.

alot of this episode played like an episode of the Clone Wars or Rebels. Action takes top priority and if you think too much on some elements of it than it loses it's appeal, and I don't mind that about this episode and the whole series as a whole. Now I do have my own issues with the show, but overall, I enjoyed it. and in defense of Thrawn, You can't blame the guy, he has been out of it for awhile and he is going to lose some of his edge. Maybe the chimera lost it's space travel capabitily and needed the aid of the Eye of Sion to get it into space. I mean, the ship does look beat up, it’s a miracle it’s even flying to begin with. and would explain why Thrawn was on the Eye instead of the Chimera. Maybe the reason why Thrawn didn't take off when he should of was cause he was stalling for time so that Morgan could get back on the ship after she was done dealing with Ahsoka and her crew. But when Morgan failed he just went on to blow the place to hell, I mean, he did look a little dishearted when he learned of her death. The important thing about this is that in the end, Ahsoka and her team failed, Thrawn made it back to the galaxy and maybe from there, we'll start seeing more of the Thrawn we know.

Idk man it kind of just sounds like you're nitpicking. I swear, all you Star Wars "fans" have such a hard on for ThE WrItInG. That's literally the only defense you've all had for years now. It's played out so much it's just a buzzword now. How to get people to not take you seriously? Constantly talk about the writing.

to me it didnt end weaker than the show ran, it ended as weak as it was. to me, the characters just feel "defiant" - i have no better word to describe it, they just feel like "yeah, didnt work out, but i still did everything correctly and do not deserve any criticism" thrawn IS nothing but a regular Moff/Grandmoff w/o any tactical knowledge all throughout the series, making me sad having hoped for something decent oh, and the lightsabres? yeah, plastoid surviving strikes nonstop but somehow the one inside the armour is "unalived" while the outer layers of plastoid got scarred... at best i would give the show a 3-4 on a scale of 1 to 10 cause the visuals were nice, but the story? sorry, the writing was crap!

I gave up after chapter 4. People went way too crazy at Anakin returning despite the fact that the whole scene had no point and didn't reveal anything important. The pacing and dialog were terrible throughout, but congrats I guess to the Dave Filoni cult. He gave you everything you wanted and exactly what you deserve.

I think there's something that everyone is missing. Sure there were more "common sense" things Thrawn could've done but we all know Thrawn usually doesn't operate that way. He likes to test and feel things out when hes uncertain about stuff to learn any and everything possible about his enemies. In fact, I'm noticing that a lot of people are reacting the VERY SAME WAY a lot of people in Star Wars act around Thrawn when he does stuff they think is dumb or don't understand. And what happens? In the end it turns out Thrawn knows exactly what he is doing and surprises everyone. I think that dynamic is at play here right now. What you all see as "bad writing" is Thrawn doing his usual song and dance. Once this whole series concludes, I think we'll look back on this and see how it makes sense.

While I do agree on the notes about Thrawn, he definitely acted stupid in this episode, I think you're dead wrong about Sabine and the Force in this episode. The whole season was focused on Sabine's struggle with the Force because the Force is not something that can actually be taught, it can't just be trained, and it's why Sabine, someone who trains a lot and excels in many things, has struggled with it. Sabine needed to make a connection, this is especially something we saw with Ezra's character arc through Rebels, his ability with the Force growing as he made connections, and Sabine's arc is mirroring that. Her problem was that she didn't have a strong connection with Ahsoka and was focused on finding Ezra. And once she did, she really started to grow, we saw her handling her blade better, we saw her finally using the Force, and most importantly when it was most important, the chance to finally get Ezra home, she made that connection and was able to use the Force to complete her goal. Now she's going to be forming a connection with Ahsoka.

Soooo, I get all the criticisms. But I want to know. What does the finale look like with Thrawn being the super genius he is? I feel like it would have been far less enjoyable with having someone who’s so overpowered cutting off every line of hope and the finale would have been a whopping 6 minutes, tops. While some criticism is fine and potentially warranted, we have to remember that stories, Star Wars or not, require the audience to have some degree for suspension of disbelief. Now the criticism I totally agree with is Ezra. They’re trying to leak some of that marvel humor into the show with him and I am NOT hear for it.

It would’ve been significantly more interesting if you have two opposing forces constantly trying to outsmart one another instead of just making the antagonist lose braincells for the sake of the plot. Like I don’t even understand this comment because having methodological conflict between two teams creates TENSION and that tension creates those hero moments people enjoy.

@@bullseye5262ok. So how does Ahsoka, with the help of Sabine and Ezra, “outsmart” the “genius” admiral who’s has a incomprehensible advantage already knowing where they are, how Ahsoka will approach the situation, and has a star destroyer that seems readily equipped to battle, “outsmart” him? How do you propose the writers create such tension without making the trio unbelievably powerful all of a sudden to have a fair match in the sense your suggesting? I feel it really just boils down to personal taste in the end. “God” characters, such as suggested with Thrawn in this criticism, are just not good narratively and are rather lazy. This is why I feel the decision to have him not be on top of his game here is a better approach than say Ahsoka gaining more power in the force to instantaneously match him given the odds.

Didn't like this show one bit and here are my reasons. Ms. Dowson as Ahsoka has 0 emotions on her face except complete apathy and occasional bare visible amusement/anger. Ms. Shin believes herself to be brand new Wednesday with all that non-blinking-while-on-the-screen thing, it's rather annoying for me. World between worlds is bullshit. Ahsoka's character growth is out of nothing and people just went insane and just didn't care for nothing when saw Ani-boy/Vader-Man!. Like a hungry chimp when they see a banana. The traitorous bratty Sabine who just doesn't care about anything or anyone but herself and that annoying little shit Ezra. She basically did " Oh this super evil mega genius bad guy who wants to bring back space nazis may know where my buddy at with tiniest possibility, imma go ask and release him". The show itself is a hollow bullshit that could have been ended in 1st episode with Ahsoka just destroying the map if she wants to prevent Thrawn's return, at all costs, i might add. The show itself, besides being bullshit from disney, is also a huge fan service where people see shit they want and go nuts ignoring loads of bad writing and obvious flaws, they just don't care as long as they get to see they favourite character in live action/again. Also FUCKING SPACE WHALES.

They too have to watch all of rebels to understand what's going on? I think the show's story is pretty simple, Ahsoka wants to prevent Thrawn's return by doing whatever it takes cuz if she doesn't then Thrawn alone would be able to bring empire back and as such galaxy in all out war again, republic vs the empire. And as i understand if i watch rebels the plot becomes way better and more than stopping bad guys again?

There’s a whole litany of dumb things. Here’s a few. Why didn’t Thrawn send all available fighters ; we see he has many hanging. It’s what proper Thrawn would do if he was done playing. Why didn’t Thrawn just blow up the tower beforehand. Why didn’t the Mothers sense Ezra during the trip when we’ve been shown they can sense someone coming out of hyperspace. There are several more but the point is this finale was trash & they did what we feared by making Thrawn 100% basura

The Chimera probably wasn’t even space worthy the ship was damaged and pulled into deep hyperspace and managed to remain in low orbit for a decade. If you ask me this episode was literally a live action version of a Clone Wars/Rebels episode. You expect far too much from Thrawn my friend. He made several mistakes throughout his tenure as Grand Admiral in not just Canon but in Legends as well. Reread the old Zahn books and you’ll know where I’m getting at.
@100StarWars
@100StarWars 11 месяцев назад
Even if the Chimaera wasn't space worthy (which isn't stated at any point) the ship could've literally been raised 2/300 feet above that spire which would've completely negated the whole plot. This show is trying to set up Thrawn as the next big Villain and all they did was show that he's just as incompetent as everyone else even when it comes to basic strategy. Either way, I'm very glad you could enjoy it where I couldn't though.

This show had no characterisatiom of Ahsoka, no surprising moments or anything resembling an interesting thought. Thrawn's return was embarrassing and he struggled against literally a few jedi so how can he hope to pose a threat to the new republic ? Also what was the need for it to be set in a different galaxy ? It totally breaks the canon on hyperdrives. Boring and lazy was Ahsoka.

(His dark Jedi portrayal was really great in the show and I’m okay with Dave filoni leaving the mystery there to give weight to our characters on screen) Fred/K.S

Thrawn isn't out of character in the slightest. He has always been the bumbling, pseudo-intellectual, he is in Ahsoka. He's only out of character for the version you have come to want from the EU.
