Maul's final words here always stuck with me. "YOU'RE ALL GOING TO BURN! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!" Not just because of Sam Witwer's outstanding performance, but also because he and us, the audience, both know what's about to happen. And nobody believes him.
That would cause me to Take a pause and figure out what got powerful Sith so shook. His fear and terror was genuine and came from Something he knew or saw
That would raise a lot of alarms and start questioning him. Bc Sith Lords don't freak out like that even after being caught. Especially someone like maul.
Well... Maul still has his pride and overconfidence. He should've just cut the beam on the other side! But no, his pride demands that he has to end it with a lightsaber
@@vadimblin tbf, Ahsoka could have survived that. The force lets you negate fall damage and she could have just used it to pull Maul down with her and continue the fight.
@@enderduck4253 Ahsoka is dann good in negating fall dmg but I doubt that she could handle that.... also Maul is stronger in the force. He could push her away before she could drag him down. And even if he would fall with her.... he survived being cut in half AND falling down.
This makes Ahsoka's fight with Vader all the more heartbreaking because she was told of Anakin's downfall but refused to believe it. Now when I watch Twilight of the Apprentice, I feel Ahsoka was recalling her fight with Maul and his warning to her.
exactly, I think once she sliced part of Vader’s helmet in the fight she realized Maul was right about what he said. And thus I think explains why she walked back into the temple after her fight with Vader and the structure collapsing.
@@akshaysundaram7391and then moments later to be taken into the World Between worlds trying to hold her against TheSenate. She fought Maul, Vader & Sidious for a brief moment and lived (even with the help of Ezra through the World between worlds but still)
This fight was actually motion captured, it's actually Ray Park (who played Darth Maul in Phantom Menace) doing Maul's saber moves here! The animators did tweak it and add things, but it was built off motion capture information. It's a very impressive achievement, but perhaps in a different way from the other Clone Wars duels
@@TheMimiSard Yeah, the 100% animated duels have a certain ANIMATED look to them, whereas this one looks a lot more like the live action films. Clone Wars has a lot of iconic duels but I'm glad they did this one with mo-cap, especially having Ray Park reprise Darth Maul. It's just so cool

Sidious was using the dark side to cloud the future from the Jedi, but it obviously wouldn't cloud other dark side users. Maul had premonitions, and was clever putting it all together. Perspective matters. 🙂
Uh he didn't figure it out, he was told part of the plan just like darth tyrannus was. Perhaps some details were missing but he understood the nature of the clone wars, the grand scheme of sidious and several other things.
Maul is a tragic character. The writers of The Clone Wars deserve a lot of credit for taking him from a silent killer, a character many walked out of theaters not remembering the name of (even if they'd never forget the iconic look), to being a tragedy you could write a dissertation on.
@@Thephrogdoob not sure where you're from, friend, but here our schools teach us the word hyperbole Always down to diss on the American education system when it's merited
This is honestly my favorite interaction in Clone Wars. Maul had her. He almost got her to join his side. And then he lost her when he told her about Anakin and she didn't believe her. And that's when everything about maul suddenly hit me like a truck. Maul is a lot of things. Murderer, tyrant, manipulator, a monster. But the one thing he isn't. Is a liar.
I know the Sith in the movies do lie a lot, but according to their central tenets, they should be the most honest bunch among friends and disciples. They will of course deceive their enemies though.
Let’s not forget count dooku he was many things. But in truth he was the true hero. He wanted qui gon and obi to join him and help with stop lord sidious. He told qui hon way in advance who he was really and how he was playing both sides that he planned on destroying the Jedi. I’m he taught qui gon to question everything which is why qui hon was a bit of an outcast to the other Jedi masters as he questioned every action and believed that there was always another way. After count dooku talked to him sidious caught on to what was going on and sent darth maul to kill him and he did which stopped the whole plan as obi didn’t know count dooku like qui gon did but even so dooku tried convincing him and anakin to help him. They didn’t which lead to the events we know. If they did help stop sidious dolly’s version of the galaxy was completely different and honestly would of been 100% better than if sidious won and there would of been legitimate peace. Count dooku wasn’t a true sith. If you want proof, look at his eyes, he never had sith eyes because he never excepted the dark side like most people did. He questioned it and questioned the Jedi and refused to fall prey to either side. He stood to his morals till his death. He was a true hero that never got his chance to shine.
@@JohnSmith-bs9ym it’s an ability dooku never used. Dooku was to busy politics and everything else. He did use his sith eyes I think once or twice in the animated series. But it was a very very rare.
You know this is insanely well written when the tension is earth shattering. Maul articulating Anakin’s destiny was like rediscovering his fate when we already knew about it
Right? It's because Anakin being groomed had always been implied, but not articulated. Therefore when it was vocalized, and from Maul's inside perspective, it had impact.
Actually that already happened after sidious killed savage, long story short talazan eventually got lured out and got killed by grevious, but maul managed to escape
I love how important Maul became to the story, going from a no-personality bad guy just to be a villain in TPM to basically being the guy that knew everything and was actively trying to stop Sidious from raising to power, even if his methods were flawed and no one believed him.
I love when a character was made to be a one off villain, and then develops into an important and beloved figure. It happened to one of my DnD characters, and they have been my best character by far.
I didn’t like Maul portrayal in Rebels. Like u said trying to stop Sidious rise to power, you’ll think his next move would be to sabotage the empire. Like probably help finance the rebellion through his criminal empire, supplying them with stolen imperial weapons through smugglers. I expected more from him but just got same old revenge against Kenobi story 🙄
Well, he didn't actually know about Order 66, as he said "I had a glimpse of my master's plans, but I did not realize they were sewn so deep." He didn't know the clone army was made to destroy the Jedi, he only knew that in some way they would help him win.
@@Death_13TH He knew the Jedi Purge and the Empire were going to happen, he just didn't know how. Either way, he knew Sidious was going to rise to power, and he knew death was a preferable alternative to living under his rule.
That "we're all going to die" feels so fucking terrifying. The fact he would rather fall to his death than risk being at the will of Sidious speaks VOLUMES
The more I rewatch this, the more I realise that maul was going easy on Ashoka, he genuinely wanted to not kill Ashoka and tried to reason with her multiple times. Guys report the 2 kids in the comments for unnecessary spam
I’ve said that from the beginning. My first clue was when she kicked him out the window and she got up gasping for breath. She didn’t do that with anyone else she has ever fought in the show. Maul was in a different class of combat and he could have easily won if he really wanted to.
You know what would be awesome, if we see the throne room in the Mandalorian and it still has ghosts of those lightsaber scratches on the floor. Something makes me think they'd not erase them entirely out of respect-like keeping scars on their armor.
@Ryan He's not wrong... look it up. Armor and Armour are the same and both correct spelling. One is the American spelling and the other may be preferred by other English speaking cultures like Britain.
Should’ve believed him Ashoka. On the side note I love Maul’s change in tone of voice before being captured and stunned that yelling of the destruction of everything felt so real and genuine.
I feel like at that point while he was screaming in genuine terror, she felt immense confusion, but she pushed her feelings and thoughts aside and carried on by doing what's already practical.
It didnt matter because when they were fighting anakin found out that palp was a sith lord and it would have been too late if she actually joined him or listened to him
@@mathies3598 Actually you do. I can choose to believe that my view point in belief is right because I believe so (weird way of putting it). I can also choose to believe in others on group projects because they have given me good reason to believe they’ll come through.
The way that Maul screamed "You don't know what you're doing, we're all going to die"! it just gets me every time, the fact that none of them, not even the clones ( give a few like 5s) knew what terrifying things were about to happen, except him, and Sidious is truly moving.
Tbh, they shouldn’t have even brought Ahsoka into live action, she looks way better in an animated style. Even Rebels Ahsoka looks better than how she does in live action. Ahsoka should’ve been an animation only character.
@@fivestarguy100 exactly. If they wanted to give her a solo oroject, it should've been animated as well. Her transition into la betrays her roots and doesn't do her arcobatic dueling style any favors.
"We could have destroyed Sidious!" "Only for you to take his place!" Beautiful dialogue, really cements that despite Ahsoka being wrong about Anakin, she's still right not to trust Maul.
Even then I doubt they could take out Sidious. Not like Maul has ever even approached Sidious in terms of power. And no offense to Ahsoka but she isn't top of the world either. And the last person Maul promised power to was killed in 1 hit by Sidious.
@@haruhirogrimgar6047 No, but they could have got to Anakin in his pivotal final moments before Mustafar. I think the one person that could *maybe* have prevented Anakin's full descent into Vader at that point would have been Ahsoka. Obi Wan had lost his trust, and Padme was the focal point for all his passion and fear of loss. Ahsoka was the one true friend he had left, and her having left the Order while sticking to her moral principles could have served as an example to him of how he could find balance in himself. In a way, the master-apprentice roles would be reversed - she would teach *him* how to find his path between dark and light. Plus it would have made for great drama if they teamed up, cause Maul would be all "Anakin needs to die to save the Galaxy" and Ahsoka would fight for him to be saved.

tbh a familiar monster like Maul is easier to deal with than the mystery that is Sidious…ofc this all hinges on them being able to take Sidious down in the first place.
The only thing missing from this is some of the banter that was in the Ahsoka novel. When Maul says he was upset that they only sent a padawan to take him and she replied with "You're only half a sith" Not even Anakin got burned that bad.
2:34 the way he flies thru the window with the lightsaber marks on both sides, is a throwback to old Wiley Coyote cartoons when he would fly thru a wall and leave an outline of his shape.

YOU'RE ALL GOING TO BURN! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!-Darth Maul One of Maul's best lines because it was both epic and true.
I get chills everytime to be honest. Because they truly do not know what is to happen. It reminds me of the finale of Loki and how terrified Loki is of what is to come and trying to warn everyone.
yeah it is plot armor at it's finest. He could have just pushed her over with the force making Rex capture her instead which gives Maul the time to escape
Or simply use a single saber for way more precision. Ahsoka would've been forced to land on a gunship, where they then could've surrounded Maul. That would've made way more sense for the plot than a Palpatine-trained Sith gitting his weapon grabbed.
What’s great about this fight, is that after 3 seasons, Darth Maul went back to his roots in lightsaber combat, and it’s amazing to see him back in that manner.
Even better - Disney brought back Ray Park to perform motion capture for this fight. Maul hasn’t looked this good since _Phantom Menace,_ and that’s a big part of the reason why.
You gotta give the Clone Wars animators some serious props for how far they came in being able to recreate realistic light saber duels from the beginning of the series. This is a serious improvement from the first several seasons.
Part of it is thanks to motion capture. Ray Park and The Armorer's stunt doubles were responsible for the crazy choreography that would be extremely difficult to animate alone.
@@BrianSilva-oc7xg I definitely enjoy both styles. The unrealistic, force powered ridiculousness of earlier stuff, and the absolutely amazingly choreographed stuff we see here. That being said, they definitely improved even in non-motion captured stuff in later seasons. Such as the duels of Sidious vs Maul and Savage, or Kenobi and Skywalker vs Dooku. All of which really showcased the styles of each character.
In one of the stuntman react episodes on the Corridor Crew channel had the woman that did the mocap for Asoka break down the process, was awesome to see👍🔥
4:41 Some legendary tier voice acting from Sam Witwer there. From Starkiller to Darth Maul he was always giving it his all, you can really hear the desesperation and horror in those screams, in any other scenario this would be just a crazy Sith, but here? With the knowledge we have about what's about to go down? The entire scene makes Maul look more heroic than he otherwise would look, it was the last chance the galaxy had to save itself, and as soon as Maul lost that fight and got captured any hope for the galaxy to not fall into darkness vanished completely, and he knew this, he wanted to die before things went down and finally be free.
@Vaquero2o9 I'm curious about what was originally planned for when he met Obi Wan again If I remember, Sam said that originally, there was more dialogue between the 2
Maul begging to die over being captured was one of the strongest things I had seen in this series when it premiered back in 2020. So on point- Filoni is a master
“He is the key to everything.” - Great line that always hits the bullseye. Maul hadn’t a clue just how right he was. He could only see so much of the big picture, in spite of all his experiences.
In the event where Ashoka didn’t believe him... Maul should have thrown his lightsaber off to the side (much like Luke) to show that he was telling the truth and didn’t want to wage war with Ashoka
Ashoka’s Ataru form is so clean, the he way she flips into her opponents with overhead strikes and the way she makes up for her size by pushing all her weight behind her blade is a great parallel to Yoda who emphasizes pure agility in his form. The way she implements martial arts with kicks and backhands with her saber reminds me of Qui Gon too which was probably really pissing Maul off.
Not as clean as Aayla Secura or Shaak Ti but that's kinda cheating because they are both Jedi Masters after all. Ahsoka's Ataru form came a very long way for someone who isn't even a Jedi.
@@FilthyFrankenjoyerkeep in mind she is essentially a freshly promoted knight in terms of experience here, she had maybe a few months between leaving the order and the battle of mandalore.
@@FilthyFrankenjoyer in terms of experience they definitely have a leg up on Ahsoka, but in terms of skill, Ahsoka was definitely a more competent fighter than either of them. @@VaguelyRowletneither Aayla nor Shaak Ti were as experienced as Ahsoka, they didn’t duel Grievous or Ventress, Aayla dueled Maul alongside with Windu (in SOD) but Maul managed to take on both of them and he was giving Aayla a hard time while defending from Windu’s attacks. And both Ti and Sekura’s senses were not sharp enough to get prepared for incoming death threat when Order 66 happened. Even Depa Billaba extremely skilled duelist who managed to cut off on of Grievous’s arms in a fight wasn’t good enough to survive Order 66. So Ahsoka is extremely skillful

I love everything about The Siege of Mandalore. I love Maul’s character arc and Sam Witwer’s incredible delivery of every line. It’s incredible how Darth Maul went from a one-off villain in TPM to something of an anti-hero. He knew what was coming and definitely did everything in the name of his own survival and to get revenge on Sidious, but had Maul’s plan worked, many lives would have been saved. I love the completion of Ahsoka’s character arc. She finally grows up and is willing to put faith in herself, not necessarily in the Jedi. In my opinion, this is where Ahsoka becomes a Master. It’s also incredible to think that Ahsoka is one of only 3 Jedi to defeat a Sith Lord in single combat, Obi-Wan having beaten Maul in Phantom Menace and Anakin killing Dooku in ROTS. I love the dialogue. Every line has weight and story behind it. You can feel Maul’s desperation, how badly he needs allies and how afraid he is of the future. You can feel Ahsoka’s disgust when he says Anakin will fall to the Dark Side. Even Ahsoka’s quippy lines are things she picked up from Obi-Wan and Anakin, but while they might be their words, the way Ahsoka delivers them is unique to her character. She speaks carrying more experience than at any point previously in this show and it makes a world of difference. I love the Lightsaber fights. The animation is incredible. This is maybe the finest lightsaber battle in Star Wars: no unnecessary spins or aiming for the blades, no environmental hazards, just two duelists fighting with every ounce of skill and strength they have. Also, shout out to the animators for when Maul ignites his double-saber. It’s a clear reference to the moment he ignited the double-saber for the first time in TPM. Also, kudos for animating sparks on the floor when Ahsoka was doing her backhand spring and her Lightsabers hit the ground. I love the music. This sounds like Star Wars music: strong, horn heavy instrumental music. The choice to juxtapose the very triumphant music to showcase how Ahsoka feels accomplished meanwhile we all feel the tension in each scene because we know how this ends. If you had told me 5 months ago that I would say that The Clone Wars is the best Star Wars has ever been, I would have laughed in your face. But now… the last two seasons of Clone Wars just hit perfectly. They didn’t miss a single beat. It is Star Wars at it’s absolute best.
Execpt Mauls plan wouldn't have saved many lives. It would have only delayed the inevitable because being a Sith at heart after he takes Sidious place he may or may not want to stop order 66. He's not really an anti-hero, he's still a villian but not the ultimate villian like Palpatine is. So his plan would still involve the death of the jedi. He'd still want to kill Obi-Wan. The Jedi council would most definitely tried to take him prisoner again. He'd still want the jedi purge to happen with or without the Clones. And he would still cause chaos and destruction in his own way. He just knows the Sidious's plan is wipe all of his enemies out- including Maul along with the Jedi
@@colbywidener7092 If Maul succeeded then it would have changed the entire trajectory of Star Wars. The defining moment of the entire series was when Anakin joined Sidious; this plot point was the most important prophecy in the entire series. If Maul + Ashoka killed Sidious (which I seriously doubt), then Anakin would not have been lured to the dark side. Even if Anakin somehow got pushed over to the dark side, then he wouldn't have had a Sith lord as his master and he would have been FARRR weaker than his iteration of Darth Vader. If Anakin never became Darth Vader, then there would have never been balance to the force. As for Maul replacing Insidious, that is impossible. Sidious was a well-known and life-long politician who was able to mislead everyone (including the jedi), because of his superior guile and mastery of the force. Maul did not possess such guile, and even if he did, then he would never have been able to orchestrate order 66 since he would not have been able to seize control of the clones from under the jedi. The moment that Sidious would have died 9 (again, I doubt that Maul and Asoka could have killed him), the blight that Sidious placed obscuring the Jedi's communion with the force would have went away, and the Jedi would have realized that the clones were irrevocably compromised. BTW, an anti-hero IS a villain. People misconstrue what an anti-hero is, because they can't differentiate between a protagonist with non-standard moral values versus the modern interpretation of a hero, which is a good guy. Maul is a tragic hero in the truest Greek sense, since he undergoes significant change (satisfying the criteria for a Greek hero), but he is tragic in that he is unable to fulfil his goals due to his character flaws.
This duel is my definitive favorite duel in all of star wars for several reasons. 1. Unique. This was the first duel we have seen on screen between double blade and dual blade users. 2. Felt heavy. The apprentice of the Chosen One v.s. The killer of his master's master. 3. Felt balanced. It felt like the fight was fairly even with Maul being stronger and faster, but Ahsoka being quicker and smarter. 4. Well paced. The duel didn't feel too fast or too slow. Bursts of battle with quick monolauge. 5. Felt alive. Sometimes with animated duels it doesn't feel real, but this fight felt like the movements were light while the strikes were heavy.
@@MCSPARTAN501 That and the animations in this show are usually the opposite extreme, with a lot of very pose-to-pose animating since fights have so many swings.
Maul is a villian that is hard to hate. Because so much of what he says and does is actually to stop other more powerful villian from rising to power. And can we just take a moment and appreciate the level of music that was put into this fight. AHHH. ITS SOOOO GOOD.
I love how Ahsoka herself gives off some type of respect to Maul. She went from saying that Maul wouldn't last if Anakin showed up to commenting on how Maul is hard to kill. Game recognize game. Lol
I think the best example of them respecting each other is when they take a short break at 2:06. There's no hate, revenge, anger, pride, need to kill each other ASAP, just two warriors trying to best each other. Sure, Ahsoka was taunting him, but it feels more like friendly banter than an actual insult
That was a diss! She said that he should be glad that Anakin didn't come himself because the way he was fighting, he wouldn't last very long at all against him. That's something I never understood that in the entire Rebels and Clone wars franchise, Anakin/Vader and Maul never got to fight. That would have been an interesting battle. But maybe it can still be explored. Kenobi finally kills Maul for good about 3-4 BBY, about 6 years after the Obi Wan Kenobi series when Luke and Ezra (both born in 19 bby) were 15 or 16 or so. There is still a 5-6 year period between Obi Wan Kenobi and Rebels, Perhaps Vader and Maul clashed before Maul was the leader of the Crimson Dawn syndicate, with Maul barely escaping, but completely giving up trying to kill vader and deciding to rule over lower-hanging fruit. Which is why when he meets Ezra and the others, he says, "I cannot beat Vader alone." having already barely escaping him before. Disney, I hope you are reading this and taking notes. haha :)
We've seen Order 66 in so much SW media (and its many many aftermaths) thorough the years, and Filoni managed to keep us at the edge of our seats with this scene. This just shows that maul has no intend in killing Ahsoka. He was dominating the fight almost all the time yet he wasn’t going for killing moves and breaking points.
ngl, the bit where he elbows her in the face and she just recovers is ridiculous, I have been punched in the face and while I was so hyped on rage at the time that I viewed it as a minor detail, it definitely hurt afterwards and that was just by a schoolyard bully, here we have a highly trained martial artist, elbowing, so the force is concentrated on a much smaller area, someone who is not allowed to fight using unbridled fury, right in the face, she should at least have a blood nose after that blow if not a broken one and even if that is not allowed for rating reasons she should still be in a lot more pain.
It's called " we know maul is far stronger in the force, and a far better duelist, but it's a woman character so she's the best no matter what". Lame. And now filoni is retconning the lore post revenge of the sith, so he can make her a part of every moment in star wars history. He even had Luke simping for her. I get that she is his creation, but he's really ruined her character recently.
I give the edge to Maul in this fight. He has disarmed Ahsoka thrice, and for the latter part of the fight seems to be more focused on getting away or getting Ahsoka to join him. @2:36 you can clearly see Ahsoka needed to catch her breath. However, props to Ahsoka for wearing down Maul long enough, using his weight or strength against him, and capturing him. This was well-made, well-choreographed fight.
Yeah no. She just would not be able to beat him. Explaining what she did doesn’t take away the fact that she just shouldn’t have been able to. But yeah this fight was incredible .
@Darth Momo And yet she did and the show runners gave a reason. It was confirmed by the show runners that Maul was the superior duelist. It was the fact that his mind was so off-balance plus arrogance and overconfidence that Ahsoka was able to win...and even that win was more do to outwitting him.
@@IamCanadian3333 arrogance and overconfidence are off the table. We can't just take whatever the writers said so seriously. We have to look at previous experience with other firm of media and past episodes because the action is done. Ahsoka won and now they can say whatever excuse they want because it already happened. Maul had always been arrogant and overconfident but that shouldn't mean he sucks at fighting all the sudden. There's a really good video on it by a buddy of mine I'll send a link in a different comment. But in case you don't have like an hour and a half I'll shorten it down a bit. He is an experienced fencer and he uses that as an example. There is a letter rating system I'm the USA that goes from a to e. A is the highest rated and best fencers. He is a level b fencer and uses a style weak to hyper aggressive type fencers so if he was being rushed by another a or b fencer he would probably lose. And if he were to fight an aggressive c type fencer he would most likely win but wouldn't be surprised if he lost. But if he were to fight a D level fencer the he wouldn't be worried. Because there is such a gap in the skill level between B and D level fencers. He even fought such a fight and won in a short time scape. Hopefully you can see where i- or technically he was going with this. He also explains how with close levels or ratings advantages and disadvantages matter a lot more than with further levels and they should look to style. But by going off of that then we would be saying ahsoka would be equal to Anakin and obi wan which just isn't true. The gap between ahsoka and mauls power is just too much for ahsoka to win by reasons such as overconfidence and arrogance. The writers are just using whatever excuse they can to justify ahsoka's win. But they can't because it just shouldn't be possible. Of course you are missing a lot of context and I recommend watching his video
Just love how fluid the fight was here. I heard they actually brought Ray Park in to do the mocap for this, so it definitely feels more real then all the fights in the show
It's really cool that as soon as Maul and Ahsoka clash, you hear Sidious' monstrous force shriek, illustrating where we are in Episode III at this point.
"I know Anakin"... Oh Ahsoka, you naive little fool. You and Obi-Wan ignored every warning sign there was and couldn't believe how he would fall so far until it was too late. You confused recklessness with bravery, arrogance with charm and posessiveness with compassion.
Anakin was a genuine person. His fall was due to the fact that he needed to come to terms with his emotions and was told to just ignore them. He did what he was told the best he could.
0:41 I love how irritated Maul is about Ahsoka telling him to believe Anakin will bring balance to the force. Maul saw what Anakin will do in his Vision. And a "Jedi" telling him in this moment, when every thing is about to fall apart, that Anakin will bring balance to the force, is just so absurd to him. Him realising the Jedi dont have in the slightist any Idea in what is about to happen, probably had his respect for the jedi bounce to zero.
@@jswajsbergi think that Luke and Vader was more of a back up plan that the force had to wipe out both extremist religions from the galaxy. The original plan the Gorce had for the Chosen One was for Qui-Gon to train Anakin to change the increasingly stagnant Jedi Order, but that plan was scuppered on Naboo thanks to Sidious.
Fun Fact: Darth Maul from "The Clone Wars" and "Rebels" is voiced by Sam Witwer, the voice actor of Starkiller/Galen Marek, who was known as Darth Vaders secret apprentice and the protagonist from "The Force Unleashed" video game. He also voiced several other characters in the Star Wars series.
This was the moment that the two most developed hero and villain in the show finally met in combat. This came together through jaw-dropping choreography, beautiful dialogue, and an overwhelming amount of tension. Everything came full circle in this duel- we know Ahsoka was right not to trust Maul, but her feelings toward Anakin blinded her. Maul never lied in this series, and they so beautifully integrated his strong reliance on the force to become a prophetic persona. The screams of terror at the end just had my jaw on the floor- we all know what’s going to happen, but they don’t. He is so horrified by what the outcome is that he is begging A JEDI to not only kill him, but listen to him to save themselves! You really walked away from that like, “holy shit, this is all about to happen.” For those not born in 2005 or before, this and the final two episodes were just a gift to the world that couldn’t experience ROTS in theaters. Hands down the most well written sequence in all of the Clone Wars.
After watching Tales of the Jedi it really hits home the irony that if Anakin hadn’t trained her so damn well she would have never survived this battle - nor the ambush of her clone troopers. Ahsoka is a badass. Can’t wait to see her series!!!
Let's be real, Ahsoka only survived this battle because Maul believed he could turn her. There are 2 distinct points in this battle where he didn't press an attack and let Ahsoka get back up, when he could've just finished her there.
@@pauldhoff Nah man you got it all wrong, I love Ahsoka, I'm pumped as all hell for her upcoming show. But she still was outmatched here, which makes sense. Maul has been killing Jedi since before she was alive. And in the end, her superior wits bested him, due to his arrogance.
@@yunglink992 just for you I went back to watch that battle as the details were hazy I hadn’t watched it since it first aired - but in no way did I ever see she was on the ropes she even kicked him thru a window and the battle could’ve ended there but she chased him down again - even when she lost her sabers she still countered everything he did perfectly and even reversed the momentum by grabbing his own saber - hell she saved him from dying! She was Mauls match and then some Lol I think you need to rewatch that again also. My original comment stands.
True, at the end she did wear him down. But, Maul did best her 3 times. Honestly I just couldn’t stop thinking, oh you’ve got no idea what’s about to happen.
@@overanDownUnder I think at this point in time she was close to the level of Obi Wan Anakin and Maul. But growing even stronger in Rebels beating Inquisitors and holding her own against Vader. A great journey.
@@janos5555 She was definitely not close to those three people at this time in her life. To say that, it would mean that she was near the level of the greatest practitioner of Soresu in the history of Jedi (even Mace can’t penetrate his defense); and nearly as best as one of the top Jedi of the time in terms of skill which is hardly true due to how many times she was disarmed by someone who didn’t have the intention to kill her; and nearly as best as the person who gives a tough time for Kenobi who I will say again was the greatest practitioner of Soresu. She is one of the top in skill level among regular Jedi Knights, but she is not yet there with the greats. Your statement better aligns with Rebels Ahsoka :), especially that she was able to put up a good defense against Vader (without getting disarmed (if my memory serves me right)) really shows how much she grown in her skills.
@@janos5555 she was still weaker than maul and well vader probably wasnt using his full strength against ahsoka probably cause he still feels his emotions and doesnt really want to kill her so no she is nowhere near as strong and considering how obi wan easily defeated Maul multiple times
He dIdnt win twice. Ahsoka threw him out of the window and he lost to a 17 year old who is just reaching knight level. Pretty embarrassing for a Sith Lord.
@@brianhanes5413 he disarmed her 3 times while not trying to kill her. Even the creators said maul was above ahsoka. Talking about a guy who consistently rag dolls obi wan with the force. It’s an amazing fight but if maul was really trying to kill her, I would give the fight about a minute
She fought with, thus learning a lot from both of them throughout the years. Just like Kenobi learned a lot from Qui-Gon, Yoda, and the other masters too.
I loved how they used motion capture for this duel with Ray Parker reprising his role as Maul for this. Sure its not as fast as the other duels in this series but it makes it feel more about skill and technique rather than speed or strength. I might be over exaggerating but this duel is still one of my favorites
Just about to say. Also, it would’ve seemed like Anakin would’ve killed her long ago after becoming Vader shortly after the end of the clone wars if he found her given how we saw her fight as her season 7 self of clone wars fight against a freshly turned Sith Lord Anakin. Keep in mind, she did almost die in Rebels against Anakin and that would’ve been canon had not Ezra saved her from her death in the timeline where she does die. She’s come back wiser and more strong in the ways of the force, especially after confronting Sith Lord Anakin at his best and passing the test. Ahsoka Tano will be remembered as one of the greatest Jedi’s in history.
This scene really made me wake up to how far she's become. From that annoying little twerp to a mature, resourceful and powerful young woman and one of the best characters in Star Wars ever. She had truly an amazing art. Kinda brings a tear to the eye. You know... moments before they start overflowing.
I think they'll do the same with Rey eventually given enough time. The fun thing about star wars is that lots of writers get to do their own takes on the characters.
@@seekingabsolution1907 Not a chance. Ahsoka was intentionally written to be unlikeable at the beginning. Dave Filoni had a very specific character in mind, and wrote her with flaws he knew would make the audience dislike her. Over the course of about four episodes, he adjusted those flaws to demonstrate some character growth and endear her to the audience. There is a great character analysis that shows what he did and how he went about it, and the psychology of why it was so successful. Rey was written as a power fantasy as part of a political agenda. She's barely even a character. And, as a result, we'll see Ahsoka return again and again(like she did in Rebels and The Mandalorian) due to fan demand, whereas Rey will be consigned to the Disney dumpster fire and never be seen again.
@@SidestickPilot Exactly. When he starts to scream you know there's some serious shit going on. It's the same when he infamously screams Kenobi in Rebels
Maul could’ve killed Ashoka in under a minute if he wanted to, in fact he disarmed her and had her dead to rights twice. But he had grown as a character and knew he needed Ashoka to stop Sidious so he held back eventually losing due to that. Ashoka definitely grew as well, no longer being a weak or naive Padawan, but a true Jedi Knight. For her to beat even a Maul holding back is impressive.
@@jonshaqqir4575 watch that fight again. He could’ve easily have killed her several times and wasn’t as aggressive as he usually is. He needed Ashoka and because of that fact didn’t go full force.
@@jonshaqqir4575Maul mid diffs her if he actually tries. He disarmed her in like 30 seconds and could've continued his onslaught without letting her force pull her lightsaber back. After she kicks him out the window realizing she cannot keep up with his strength she is basically gassed out. She follows him anway even tho he has no intentions to kill her or go back for her. They fight for another minute and he disarms her again this time knocking down both her lightsabers. After that her plot armor really kicks in, he could've easily force pushed her off after she said never to joining him. She had no way to block or counter him so all he had to do was force push/pull choke or just slice the other half of the beam and escape without being captured. So in short Maul should've won but the plot needed Ahsoka to win.
Literally confirmed by Dave that she won due to Mauls overconfidence. Also confirmed that Maul is the better duelist, but Ahsoka was skilled enough to keep up with him. During the duel she had her full concentration, during the second duel she wasn’t as concentrated and let her own aggravation get to her allowing Maul to disarm her and get rid of both her weapons. I don’t understand why everybody has to argue about when we can all just appreciate how amazing it is.
@@scruffd0g193 Nah. Zuko overcoming the odds was well set up. Ahsoka got magically better when she needed to. She shouldn't be taking on Sith Lords. And I know that Filoni said that Maul could've killed her and whatnot, but then they should've showcased that better. This made Ahsoka feel way too close to the top tier fighters than she should be, because Maul was literally equal to Sidious in Juyo, which was both of their preferred fighting styles. How the fuck does Ahsoka beat Sidious' equal in lightsaber combat, even if he's holding back? It's dumb.
@@TheStraightestWhitest to give ahsoka credit, you can see her growth as a jedi duelist throughout clone wars, and in season 7 when she's DEFINITELY matured, i'd say that she probably couldnt BEAT maul, even if he was holding back. but i could certainly see her at least being able to stay alive and hold her own. not only was anakin her master, but im sure she got some soresu lessons from obi wan as well. she also didnt want to kill maul either. both of them were holding back. its just a matter of perspective on who was holding back MORE.
What was funny is Maul *never* lied here. He actually just wanted to destroy Sidious. If he had done anything, like tell Ashoka who Sidious was, or find a way to show the others what Anakin was becoming, all of the original trilogy could probably have been prevented. All they needed to do was for a moment, just a moment, put their trust in a Sith’s words.
Ahsoka’s first lightsaber hilts were so perfect! I love the way she uses anakins hilt as inspiration as Padawans are supposed to with hers basically being anakins hilt cut in half and two half’s connected together and also having the end knob like Kenobi’s. Her white saber is amazingly badass but these hilts are most definitely one of the best hilt designs in all of Star Wars
Telling someone that you plan on killing their loved ones isn't exactly the best way of getting them to join you. It would have been trivial for him to frame it as Anakin being in danger.
Whether she knew it or not, this was actually her final trial. This is the battle that made her a Jedi Knight, unfortunately the part of the test she did fail, was letting her relationship with Anakin cloud her from seeing the truth. However, joining Maul would have been a failure, and she probably would have died. By the time her and Maul made it to the emperor, Anakin would have already fallen, and order 66 would have been in place.
motion capture on this was amazing. Just watch the footwork, feels so dynamic and fluid but still realistic. 1:36 Maul hops on one foot to kind of fake a defensive stance but then presses his offense. 1:55 Maul does it again, Ahsoka evades 2:08 Not fighting but that is like every lightsaber stand off in live action but really reminded me of Anakin's standoff against Dooku in AotC and RotS. 2:20 Spins don't cut it anymore, Ahsoka. She switches to the unorthodox. Backflip, and then when pinned by Maul, decides to use and kicks him out. And then everything on the beams. Absolutely awesome. Both characters makes stumbles and slips but never lose confidence in their balance.
It's actually insane how i literally said to myself "this looks like real people fighting, almost like motion capture" just to see this comment holy shit clone wars really went all out
I love Ahsoka's expression at 4:34. She's like "wtf" at Maul saying he wants to die. I don't think we've ever seen a Star Wars character WANT to die out of desperation before.
@@FBI-ju5no bruh it’s literally motion capture, search up Star Wars clone wars s7 motion capture, there’s literally a whole vid on it, a bit of research doesn’t hurt 💀💀
3:46 always stands out to me - it looks like a two sided saber variant of form 3. Maximum defense, extremely tight blade work, extremely fluid motion, essentially the opposite of mauls preferred form - strong abrasive powerful strikes, like a hammer almost. Mauls biggest rival had to be obiwan, considered to be the greatest form 3 user, and maul has been shown using it in the last like against palpatine. I always liked the idea that maul studied form three specifically to better combat obiwan, but in the process discovered the benefits to a defensive form
At 1:36 you can hear the sith scream. It’s sounds exactly like sidious used in episode 3 when fighting mace windu. Either it’s a call back or darth maul used the sith scream to disorient Ashoka
Idk if you play battle front.. but I always recognized him starting the fight with his spin dash attack in that scene. In the game and here it looks like sidious sith scream dash although not as potent. He taught him well lol
I think its implying that this fight scene is mirroring Windu vs Sidious in real time.. because its not long after their fight is over that O66 is executed
So this fight was "Slower" than a lot of fights we saw in the show but i loved the fact i could actually track all the movement and it wasnt just insane speed of lightsabers swinging back and forth where its faster than eye tracking. This felt so much better and seemed so fluid
I genuinely thought he was gonna defeat her using the exact style he put Padawan Obi-Wan thru so much trouble with in the reactor room I was afraid for Ahsoka. Thank God Anakin trained her well. Too well almost.
A detail I love is how Maul has Ahsoka at the end, simply cutting the beam would have been the fastest way to end it, but his pride wouldn't let him so he goes in for the lightsaber kill, and Ahsoka keeps her cool, gets inside his guard and defeats him. Maul never learns, he's always overconfident and that's something he never grows beyond, to his demise.
Maul should’ve just stayed on the defensive to prove he had nothing against Ashoka or currently the Jedi. Just wanted to stop one of the largest changes that was coming for the galaxy and then to be left alone.
Well he was a true Sith when he used the opportunity to kill a powerful opponent that could be his rival in the future. Also Sith are typically arrogant and addicted to winning.
@@thebookofspirit1777 at the same time ashoka would have never let maul leave she could have left when he got tossed out the window but she was determined on finishing the job so I don’t think there was any other way IMO.
I like when people say that Ashoka should have listened to Maul. He wanted to kill Anakin. The death of him will be pointless at this moment, Sidious would have won with or without Anakin. The extension of the unbalance was so great that nothing could stop it, the death of Anakin would have just doomed the galaxy, because no one else could redeemed the Force, after all Anakin is THE child of the Force.
Thats a tough call here. Anakin is the one that purged almost all jedis. Hes the one that saved sidious. Hes the one that forced yoda and obi wan to split to face himself and sidious seperately. He definately influenced obi wan more than once and deceived the jedi council in more than one way, even if part of it was unknown to him. There is too much speculation to be definitive about the outcome. One thing is definitive tho, it would have made the Empire much weaker and the Rebels much stronger in not having Vader and having many jedis still alive and potentially training padawans. Maybe Sidious would have risen anyway, but perhaps not at all. Time was also of the essence here. It wasnt playing to Palpatine's advantage. The attack on Coruscant was actually him trying to flee due to his cover being very close to be unmasked (you can reqd it in both the wiki and the clone wars mini series intro) It would have also weaken the Republic enough to strenghten the seperatists as they grew tired themselves of the charade, but Sidious needed Anakin to end the leaders as it would create a strong opposition to his rule on top of the Rebel alliance.
Maul knew Palpatine had already won, the Empire was all but waiting for the announcement. This was personal I think, the former apprentice cutting down his intended replacement. He can't strike at Palpatine directly...but, what better revenge than to undermine Palpatines judgement? To show him he was a fool by killing the golden boy, the chosen one. And force wise to stop Anakin before he could become a shatterpoint. It's a large part of why Ashoka didn't trust him. She felt, accurately, he was obsessed with revenge.
@141_Christopher Marco Manahan true, Anakin is the key at this point in time, but considering Anakins potential vs Darth Vader is insane. Anakin before the suit was possibly the strongest force user in history at this point. Nearly twice the potential of Sidious. After his injuries on Mustifar, his potential dropped 70 percent, thus Sidious was planning to replace Vader o ce he found a suitable replacement. He only kept Vader out of nessiseity. Vader was almost replaced over a dozen times, even by non Foce sensitives.
Such a fantastic show. This fight with the music, beautiful choreography, and epic lore behind it. They just don’t make Star Wars shows like they use to
I’m sorry, but this was edited absolutely beautifully. I loved it when the scenes are supposed to show parts of the war you block the screen out for like a second and then it continue to like nothing happened that was beautiful.
