AI's Impact on Hollywood 

Hi. As a vfx artist working on major photoreal films and tv shows I've incorporated ML into my workflow; I'm generally an AI enthusiast, albeit cautiously optimistic; I've explored much of the tech with what time I have available to me and I believe that the predictions made in this are significantly further off than what we're seeing today. Of course, predictions are difficult and this tech has been moving at break neck speed, so maybe I'm wrong, but there's an uncanny valley with photoreal AI video generations that aren't even close to the quality one receives with traditional cinematography (let alone photoreal cg renders that are still struggling to emerge out the other side of the valley). The videos mentioned as examples (such as "Ice Ice Matrix"), while hilarious and entertaining, would never pass through vfx reviews (let alone tech check quality assurance phases). It's one thing to create funny youtube videos with this tech, it's a whole other level when getting into high-end film/tv. Furthermore, if the hate CGI often receives (speaking of Barbie and Oppenheimer backlash to the use of CGI, and rubbish claims that VFX is not used, lol), imagine how hated AI video generations will be. While I appreciated the optimism, it seems unfettered in this interview coming from someone who "knows how the sausage is made" (all due respect).

Regarding movies, what took millions of dollars and a small army of skilled people to make will soon be something a single individual can do at home with their computer and an internet connection. People can make their own feature-length movies with amazing special effects and digital actors they construct. While you may imagine that will result in a lot of bad movies, you must consider that AI will help the creator from the idea to the closing credits. Not only that, but an AI test audience is bound to arise. With that artificial test audience, the creator will be able to see how their creation plays to the general population. They can then manually change the movie and re-render, or they can click on auto-revise, and the AI will remake the movie as many times as necessary to get a good audience rating. The future is one of artificial intelligence being able to produce media of higher quality than almost any human creator. Unless Hollywood finds a way to block the marketing of such media, how will they not become obsolete as they currently exist?

I wish you would ask harder questions, Peter. It seems weird that posed with the proposition of a recursively self-improving superinteligence, you guys talk about the future as if it'd be anything like we think of it now. Disruption of business models will surely happen, but that seems like a huge understatement of the possible effects of AI. I'd love to see more personally challenging questions asked to these CEOs and other guests.

There could be opportunities for older actors who could use their younger prime image in new movies. 80s actors like Don Johnson, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone in their prime starring as main characters again. Even family of actors who have passed on could benefit from the rights to their loved ones imagine. Jan Michael Vincent, Carrie Fisher. Ect.

So in 1-3 years give or take, ill be able to create my own movies, videos, music, and games just by typing it out? Some exciting times ahead of us.

The future is uncertain but these type of discussions will help us understand where we are going. Thank you!

SAG/AFTRA and WGA should be picketing outside of Microsoft. Generative AI is repurposing their content billions of times a day. AI models are scanning, digesting and learning from their blood sweat and tears. That is the pile of money they need to be after. Microsoft just added $154B to their value in one day with their announcement of their partnership with Meta and the pricing of their new AI tool, Microsoft 365 Copilot. That equals the total value of Disney. The unions and studios should join arms and go after the companies where their content is creating the most value: Microsoft, Meta, Open AI. AI enablers saying that validating images is too complex is completely false. They are attempting to use the illusion of complexity to confuse and intimidate so they don’t have to suffer the consequences. Remember, they can track and monitor everything we do online as well as strike down ‘disinformation.’ All of a sudden they want to throw up their hands and say artists are asking too much.

Hidden genius may get an opportunity to make movies. Hopefully good ones

Whenever someone discuses this new ideas about how to manage AI so it can be adapted to the current economic model... Do they ever wonder if maybe it's the system that needs to change not the rules? Maybe actores will become obsolete, just like coders , cashiers, writers etc. So the economic system needs to change, not the law. Bring in some kind of UBI. What? Actors are afraid to lose their cars and planes? So what? It's about time. We are almost at 2030 not in the 80s anymore....

The people cheering this on under because they hate what Hollywood has been producing lately must fail to understand that AI is actually not intelligence at all, but in fact, its machine learning--meaning it is by nature a regurgitation or iteration of whatever data it references. So if you think what "Hollywood" makes now is bad, wait till you see what AI makes when it garbles it altogether based on how some Silicon Valley nerds, who aren't remotely artistic, have taught it to interpret and generate "art". This future isn't exciting, it is the beginning of the end. And if you think its cool because you don't work in the film industry and can't wait to "make your own movies in seconds", I think you will feel differently when "AI" comes for your job next.

Do you notice how this guy does not talk about the databases for the content being stollen from artists and creatives. His thinking is so selfish in that he does not understand that disruption means people without jobs. The lack of respect and humility towards creatives in staggering. I think we need to put this guy on blast about his so called math master degree that he did not get. How is he going to compensate the creatives for the work that was used to train the AI models. How is he going to retrain people who are in their 40 plus. His lack of compassion for others is so sad.

I love AI.

People don't want to look at AI-generated actors, they want to see real emotions by real human beings. As they want to read and see stories written by real humans inspired by their real lives and emotions. Artists don't want to draw with promts, they want to draw with their hands using their imagination. And writers don't want to write promts or clean mess written by AI, they want to write for themselfs. Using AI as a tool, as a buddy who coworking aside you -- yes, sure, why not. But you will not create the future without humans doing what only humans can do -- creating impactful art. You will see.

Simple but effective solution: AI is OK but for every minute the actor is being paid.
