If Ai is really the next world-changing thing, then who’s going to own it? Like the personal computing, internet browser, and… mobile internet computing wars… who’s going to… not begin but win these AI wars?
Will it be the marriage of new and old, with Microsoft who owned desktop, but lost browsing and mobile, combined with Open AI? Will it be Google, who won majority share of search, browsers, and mobile software? Facebook, who after connecting all of our parents hasn’t seemed to be able to figure out who they are or what they want to be any more… besides Meta? Samsung, who’s always found way more success in atoms than bits. Apple, who seldom won market share yet somehow dominated mind share, and certainly profit share, for desktop, browsers, and mobile? Or will it be someone… something entirely new?

I have to remind myself that these are “neural networks”, they seem familiar because they are modelled after the familiar, the brain. The other thing is that AI is exponential and the underlying hardware technology is far down the "moore's law" spectrum. We have reached a point where new iterations that are noticeably different occur in the month time scale not years or decades. So too have technology adoption rates, as per the MKBHD video. Personally, I think the folks over at Google and OpenAI did the DARPA, infrastructure development already. We are in the Dial-up / Lisa / Pocket Pc Era, but with an exponential curve on it, we will quickly hit the Internet Explorer / Mac Era once people and companies integrate them into their day-to-day. Since those with the means of delivering AI technology are so few, they are the gate keepers and need to be regulated. AI needs to be a utility like electricity, water, or internet. Otherwise, we could end up in an Altered Carbon reality where the few have access to this “power” and others have access to its lesser cousin.

While some AI is benign. To say that there’s no agenda behind things like ChatGPT is naive. The people programming the AI have their own political bias. That directs the outcome of the the chat output.

As a tech enthusiast these capabilities are exciting, but things like AI Art are anticompetitive with people who wish to make a creative living, which is enough of a struggle as it is. Not to mention how effortlessly it can copy people’s style and provide an acceptable product for an employer who does not have to worry about hiring human beings and all of the costs an concerns that comes with. Most artistic careers are fragile and under supported to begin with. Royalties and copyrights seem more used to protect big companies’ IP than to protect the livelihood of those who create the art society benefits from in tangible and intangible ways. This seems similar to stories like John Henry and how industry and automation have threatened the livelihood of those in working classes. One could also point to how acoustic instruments have not been wiped out simply because of the advent of electronic music production and things like sequencers and drum machines. However, do we really want a world where more of us who would be happier making art for a living are forced to do something else? Or where their creativity is exploited by being some of the data fed to a machine without them earning a dime, when they otherwise might have been employed to create the art that the machine was used for? Is that progress?

I miss 3D TVs those were the best. Nothing since has provided such a leap in entertainment. The market killed it by using active 3D; LG nailed it with passive 3D. Much easier sell to NOT have to worry about charging glasses. But LG failed to market it.

Human kind cannot afford AI - all this compute power running on hardware that needs constant refreshing and renewing and innovation. The cost is in the Trillions and for what? So we do no longer need to think? Robots and automation would free up time, so much needed time we felt we owed to ourselves. Robots do the monotonous work, we relax or instigate wars. Why has human development stopped in 1970? Oh, yes, I know a lot more than when I was 19 years of age, but that was not injected through AI or some form of machine learning. It was experience, failing and starting again. There are no AI wars, it is nonsense fed into our minds because humans love wars. One has to be the best, instead of all of us being the best. We never got flying cars or 3D tv's that could broadcast smells. We fantasize what AI can do for us, until it ACTUALLY starts learning from its mistakes and not justifies its truths as fact this is all a utopia, a dream.

Saying that AI is "a tool" to be used by humans sounds a bit naive to me. It's evident, that AI is capable of so much more than that. AI is not the shovel, that makes digging easier, it's the bucket wheel excavator, that turns digging from a job demanding heavy work from hundreds, to a job demanding a few people to push buttons and levers. And the skillset that AI seems to have is even scarier. From creative writing to programming, there are few jobs that could not conceptually be replaced by AI. Yes, for now most are safe, but after a few more GPT-type revolutions, I don't see big chances for humans to compete.

@@United_Wings It will be a tool as long as they are using artificial neurons. When they start achieving success with real biological neurons, which they are already experimenting with, then it's time to get concerned.

@@United_Wings I'd say you are technically correct, but calling it a tool now gives a false sense of security. When I think of tools, I think of small items that help me achieve a task. And AI is definitely more than that.
