AIKIDO, BJJ, NINJUTSU AND KARATE, VERSUS A BULLY!

AIKIDO SILVERDALE

We asked six senior instructors from Aikido, BJJ, Ninjutsu and two styles of Karate to share how they would instinctively react versus the classic "Bully collar grab". This came out of a discussion about how to deal a school bully, so most of the responses are about showing basic principles, breaking the grip and are fairly civilised as opposed to the more obvious "move and strike" options. THIS WAS NOT A STREET FIGHT!! LOL.
Here's what happened! In order of appearance:

It's all very well trying to get an attacker in a lock when they are a static, compliant, respectful student. However, a genuine attacker will be resisting and moving any which way except the way you want them to move. I know this from many years of competitive judo. In my humble opinion, simplicity is best. If an attacker grabs you, either punch straight away OR kick depending on the range..... OR love the fact that they have initiated an ammature grip against an experienced grappler.

@AIKIDOSILVERDALE
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE 3 года назад
Absolutely. Bear in mind thus was a demonstration to a mat of mainly beginners that arose out of a discussion as to how each of the different arts might respond to a common attack, so it was purposely kept simple. The following day we tried pressure testing the same idea and of course the responsees and results were much more too the point and less useful from a kihon waza perspective.

@@AIKIDOSILVERDALE understood. But it doesn't invalidate my comment about "don't speak while you show". In fact, it's even more true for beginners class, as they try to grasp what the movement is, the last thing they need is the addition of auditory information for their brain to process. it makes the understanding of the movement even more difficult. I have taught martial arts for 26 years, and Ii find myself also indulging at commenting my own movements. But i try to "slap myself behind the head" as early as i can, about that :) .

I'm Sifu ,10th degree in AKJ American Kenpo, fifty years. I know many ways to escape from this grab, but because I am 5'2" and slim, I use the easiest move: Left hand grabs his wrist as I step under his arm with right and left leg, spinning CCW, twisting his arm as I grab with both hands and wind up with a hammerlock behind him. From there, I strike whatever target I wish, or pull his collar back and his back slams onto his right arm. Sifu Puyallup

Really interesting video and interesting seeing the range of approaches, for different people as well as consideration of what happens next. It'll be great to see more of these types of comparisons (eg for a knife attack, a couple of people in threatening behaviour, mugging etc). Obviously, there's the approach of avoiding the chance of dodgy situation arising (eg not dark alleys at night); awareness of potential risks (eg 2 people approaching in a way that doesn;t feel right and taking action such as moving to a more well lit place with other people..., scarppering, attempting to defuse the situation/not let it escalate (depending on the situation eg in a heated argument), and bearing in mind that a stolen phone is worth less than your life/serious injury (or to someone else), especially if you have insurance). Aikido excels at the awareness part throughout any such situation (without automatically jumping into an assumption and positioning that's likely to result in a fight. But having got past all of those it's fascinating seeing how people might approach situations.

A straight up, street fighting bully would be an entirely different ballgame. And yes, they're out there. That said, for the average a-hole bully... Aikido techniques were actually rather decent. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques left a lot to be desired...in my opinion. It seemed to me that he was always trying to bring the situation down to the ground. Granted, that's much of what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is about, but why do it when it's not necessary? Karate techniques seem to leave too much room for that left hand to do something. Aikido techniques were pretty decent about dealing with that possibility - as a part of the initial defense in the first place. Interesting demonstration though.

The reason bjj seeks to go to the ground is to avoid the possibility/inevitability of heavy strikes or stumbling and tripping which can cause massive damage. If you take it down, you have more control. It doesn't take much to be knocked over and a big guy who is untrained can potentially injure or even kill you with a single punch. Sometimes the ground is a terrible idea but sometimes it makes perfect sense.

@@jacobharris1846 Agreed! Can't argue that. It's definitely a situational determination. I was once attacked at a Santa Cruz, CA beach by about 7 young thugs. One of them had a baseball bat and was enthusiastically trying to bash my head in. The struggle began in an upright position. Which then led to me dropping to the ground. And then back to an upright position - where I was then able to disarm the the baseball assailant; at which point they all ran like scared bunnies. The fact that there were 7 of them actually worked in my favor.

An interesting comment, so we've translated it "We can clearly see the differences between martial arts and combat sports.. combat sports generate a questionable efficiency according to the various approaches to aggression by having a rather high energy consumption without necessarily being naturally fluid and especially certain techniques of combat sport endangers the practitioner. Martial arts such as Ninjutsu or Aikido and even Karate have a much less energy-consuming and more protective approach for the practitioner while having a certain effectiveness." Not sure I 100% agree, but the observation that the more energy-economic solutions are therefore most effective is definitely a good starting place when reviewing "reliable" self defense techniques. Most of these videos miss one vital point, the bully will not stand there still, waiting for you to start your maneuvers. Bully will try to destabilize and follow up with a punch to face. Only one move by Aikido seems realistic as it moves away from the line of attack before starting counter maneuver.

Correct. This drill was from a discussion about how we all react from an individual art pov, and we tried to show some simple the mat full of beginners could try. We pressure tested the same drill on the following day and it was far more to the point, mainly taking balance and either dropping or striking the opponent. Not very pretty to watch and not really a great way to reach fundamentals, hence this video was the one posted.

No one grabs you arm locked out then just stands there, they are gonna be pushing and pulling, shaking you around and using force. Great application of techniques! However Eye must say that unless the practitioner of these arts is really physically strong, these techniques applied by themselves won’t really work and he may find himself tussling more with his assailant than actually subduing. The thing to do is to first maim the assailant; strike the groin or pressure points of the body, then go for your wrist lock, elbow lock, throw or takedown. Eye often see that Masters do not stress this self defense strategy enough.

@@jamestait8676 So if they called it "Jujitusu" or "Japanese self defence" something it would somehow change? Names are utterly meaningless, it's who the people are and what they are doing that counts. Also, there is lost of documented, reliable evidence of the existence of ninjutsu in various form as far back as 1100. According to Shōninki, the first open usage of ninjutsu during a military campaign was in the Genpei War, when Minamoto no Kuro Yoshitsune chose warriors to serve as shinobi during a battle. This manuscript goes on to say that during the Kenmu era, Kusunoki Masashige frequently used ninjutsu. According to footnotes in this manuscript, the Genpei War lasted from 1180 to 1185, and the Kenmu Restoration occurred between 1333 and 1336.[3][page needed] Ninjutsu was developed by the samurai of the Nanboku-cho period, and further refined by groups of samurai mainly from Kōka and the Iga Province of Japan in later periods. But to reiterate my former point, it's a name, who cares what they are calling what they do? The entre reason for our organisation, and this channel is to encourage the sharing of knowledge, so whether you believe there is no ninjutsu makes no difference.

what did you expect, people like Joe Rogan, Jocko Willink and Rener Gracie keep pushing the bjj hype train bandwaggon non-stop ... it's basically becoming a blue belt factory ... furthermore, there is always a balance between quality and quantity ... and when everyone knows jiu-jitsu, nobody will benefit from it, when everyone's a blue belt, no one's a blue belt

Ok, can you repeat this with the attacker putting his boxing or mma gloves on (provided he has a pair of gloves otherwise I'd be delighted to send you some), starting to throw punches immediatly after sinking in the collar grip and defending any attempts to attack the gripping hand and arm?
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE 3 года назад
Coukd do, but all the responses would be very different I'm sure. Read the description, this was a demonstration of core principles that came out of a discussion with a young lad being bullied at school.

@@AIKIDOSILVERDALE understood. However, core principles should still be applicable under heavy artillery. I am not talking about the psychological pressure, i.e. people blacking out and switching into haymaker mode (which admittedly is an entirely different story). I am talking about addressing the collar grip with something that works against someone with a decently strong forearm without risking being knockout. This would be a really interesting and productive workshop. Check out Brian Peterson's video to see what I mean: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e_IfnyphifA.html

@@markusbarth1 for sure, but once again, that wasn't the purpose of this particular seminar demo. If I'd gave said to the uke "grab them and try to beat the crap outta them" I'm sure we'd all have done variations of the move off the line and kick hard and low. Not that interesting and would also have got the kid in trouble at school.

not cooperate but "basic" so each art could show their BASIC principles. it wasnt a street fight

Yo no he faltado el respeto a nadie. No me educaron así. Le reitero mi enhorabuena por la iniciativa y le envio saludos cordiales.

For a way more realistic solutions, Check Bas Rutten self defence videos... Most of this demonstrations just don't work in a real situation... But respect to all of them either way.
