One of the most underrated, undervalued, under appreciated and under recognized talents in the history of music. Only those who know, know what a pure gem this woman is. Thank you being you and nothing less Aimee!! Much love from a huge fan in Canada! 🇨🇦❤️🙏🍻
I agree!! She is so amazing!! I saw her with 'til Tuesday back in 1987 at a small local club in RI. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen! I love her!!!
Aimee Mann should've won the Oscar for Best Original Song for Save Me from P.T. Anderson's Magnolia. Not only is that movie emotionally staggering, but Mann's song is incredible and fit the mood so well.
Fab song, granted, but what about Wise Up?!?! The soul of the movie is in that song. And much as Aimee has written scores of fab songs since, Wise Up remains her peak for me.
@@reubenfinklestein4496 It wasn't eligible because it appeared on the Jerry Maguire soundtrack. And I don't know why it wasn't even nominated then... The Academy has a way of usually choosing the most treacly songs.
Aimee Mann does this bright/melancholy, sweet hook, minor chord-twist dark pop thing that just fucking kills me. In a good way. It's weirdly too rare in rock music. Any band that can do this as good as Aimee Mann, you'll make me emotionally crumble and feel like life's beauty is indisputable.
kinda like pixies "where is my mind". that one is a little darker though. This song is largely I, vi, iii, V. "where is my mind is mostly I, vi, III, IV. i feel like i know more songs that are similar but cant recall sadly.
I fell deeply in love with Aimee's music after seeing the video for 'voices carry" when i was in group home for fucked up kids..I still remember where i was standing in the living room of the home i was in alone watching the Tv and feeling the first feelings of feeling like a big sister(that i never had) was watching over me,and i felt flooded with love, love that i was rarely if ever given s a child and never as a teenager from abusive parents thats didnt want me........and that was a very pivotal moment in my life. Thats the power of music,folks...and specifically the power of Amy.
"I'm With Stupid' was one of the great things about the 90's, truly. And let's not forget Jon Brion, who had more than a small part in its creation. Both, gems.
It's a strange thing. Listening to Queens of the Summer Hotel brought me back here. Not to Lost in Space et al. Because sometimes you can be a Kennedy AND a Roosevelt, in one lifetime perhaps ?
So I’m like the biggest hugest super fan of only two “bands’… Pearl Jam and Aimee Mann… that makes me what just I am. And without them- would NOT have made it through life without their help - always a song to rest my brain when times get tough ❤
Count me in this group. Played the heck out of my CD of the album back in my Uni days half a lifetime ago, still keep coming back to it a half lifetime later in 2021.
Going all the way back to 1995’s I’m With Stupid, Mann was already on top of her game as a solo artist in just her second attempt. And she had already mastered the formula of marrying impossibly catchy tunes to words that simmered with disappointment and dismay. Exhibit A: the melodically springing and lyrically stinging “That’s Just What You Are.” This was a point in Mann’s career where her frustration with the machinations of record companies and the music industry in general often fueled her lyrics. Indeed, the person being addressed in “That’s Just What You Are” could be an ex-lover or an A&R man. What sets Mann apart on songs like this is her ability to deliver a verbal takedown without seeming vindictive or nasty, making her argument always seem like the commonest of sense. “That’s Just What You Are,” co-written with producer Jon Brion, also demonstrates Mann’s expert adherence to meter and cognizance of internal rhyme. The very first two lines (“In our endeavor we are never seeing eye to eye/No guts to sever so forever may we wave goodbye”) manage to both display her nimble wordplay and sum up the situation with no-frills efficiency. For the remainder of the song, the narrator casually dissects this guy’s claim that his behavior is immutable and the result of some long-ingrained character flaw. “I won’t fall for the oldest trick in the book,” she insists. “What’s the matter with the truth, did I offend your ears?” she queries in the second verse, and it’s the kind of zinger that would put a normal guy on the ropes. But the whole point of Mann’s song is that this person she’s addressing lacks the conscience that would allow these complaints to register. “Like it would kill you just to try and be a nicer guy,” she says, suggesting that the simplest of moves toward congeniality are seemingly beyond him. In the bridge, the melody arches upward and Mann’s vocals betray the hurt the narrator is obviously feeling at continually running into the same wall. “Now I could talk to you till you’re blue in the face/ But we still would arrive at the very same place/ With you running around and me out of the race.” Finally she finds herself reluctantly agreeing with his position, realizing that what she’s asking of him is simply impossible: “So maybe you’re right nobody can take/Something older than time and hope you could make/It better that would be a mistake.” Mann finally relents in the closing moments: “So take it just so far/ ’Cause that’s just what you are.” By that time, she’s blanketed on backing vocals by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, songwriting team for Squeeze and a pair that knows a thing or two about pop music excellence. In an interview, Mann defended her proclivity for downbeat material. “I don’t understand how people can just listen to purely happy music,” she said. “And writing music that is just straight ahead and happy with no conflict, it’s like going to the gym or something. It feels like a chore.”
I’m with stupid is still one of my favourite albums. The production, songwriting and musicianship is stunning. I can not think of another album that has the variety of tones as this album. Aimees’ voice, lyrics and tone is pure magic.
It's because Michael Penn loved the Beatles. He produced this album in a very similar way. Back then, they wouldn't play anything that sounded like it. 😿www.youtube.com/@akashicrecordmedialtd.7457
Jon Brion is criminally underrated. Just had to say that. Of course Aimee Mann is great, we all know that. Jon Brion is an absolute musical genius though. Can't even count how may times I've seen him at Largo (best thing to do on a Friday night in LA). My introduction to LA was getting a corn beef at Canter's and then going across the street to wait in line for standing room at the original Largo on a Friday night to see JB. God that was amazing!
Saw Aimee in a small venue... The first band was really strong... Aimee then takes the stage and proclaims to us: "Weren't they F@#%$&& awesome?? Aimee is a fantastic songwriter!
This and Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry" are awesome. It's amazing how intense the dark New Wave tones of "Voices" contrast with this light and airy song, and yet they're definitely the product of the same person.
Shortly after She started her solo career, I met her by chance walking down the street with some of her band mates. She was very friendly and one of the prettiest wominz I ever met.
Chris Difford's "harmony" chews your ankles, all through the song... the vinegar the hooks need. Just don't tell the record company, they are spending a lot of money on this, yeah ?
Yes. This is noticeably different from her eighties stuff. Weird to see the til Tuesday lead singer dressed grunge and sounding a bit AoR. But now I realize why I heard of her in the first place it was her solo tour in the nineties and some of my friends were songwriters and huge squeeze fans.
I’ve been a fan of her post-1999 works, but man this is a good song. I need to go back further. I was cool with Till Tuesday. She charms and amazes no matter what genre. What a gift.
bummed that this edit cuts the best part of the song, from the outro: "you're like a sleepwalking man, it's a danger to wake you/even when it is apparent where your actions will take you."
Such a great song. Great arrangement. The vocal backing harmonies add this extra richness to Aimee's crisp lead. Makes thinking about my ex more pleasant.
I am here because I love Aimee Mann, Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford all on THIS Song! Back up vocals by Glenn, Aimee, and Chris, guitar solo by Glenn.
+Larry Matarasso Hey thanks Larry - once I read your comment I could hear their voices. Saw them all perform here in Toronto a few years ago at a small venue - brilliant.
@@agrocerygeek1323 both are on it - glenn tillbrook is more noticeable - higher voice doubling the 'that's just what you are' line. you have to listen more for chris difford singing along - he sings lower, a crisp baritone just burbling along underneath. actually from 2:30 you hear glenn(high), aimee (mid) and chris (low) at the same time
And just like with Ms. Mann, Difford + Tilbrook are still grossly underappreciated by the masses that have their brains firmly wedged in their arses. Thankfully, there are those of us who know better.
People get annoyed when others comment stuff like "Omg its the voice actress from Steven Universe!" But lets be honest, if some didnt discover their amazing talent from SU, chances are they would have never found out about them at all. And now people can appreciate their talent outside of the show.
I fell in love with Amys music back in 1986-87 Til Tuesday got me through a shitfuck breakup in another country.( Germany) and I still love it today. She was so underrated back then :/ I'm glad 30 years later shes still getting recognition.
I met Aimee Mann at LaGuardia airport in Ny I was working for Tsa It was one of the best moments of that horrible job What an honor She is so sweet and humble Such an incredible talented lady I love her
One of those perfect songs and artists, that I heard almost 30 years ago, at my homeland cross the Atlantic, and stayed with me since. I cherish this kind of songs. They are true gems of music 💙🎼🎸🙂🙏
I feel sad because Amiee was never recognized or popular. I know people called hipsters (I hate being called that) listen to her, but she is a great talent and she should have been recognized fer it.
OH my God !!! Finally an HD version of this video one of my favorite soft rock songs. Thank so very very a million much VEVO for posting this I'm gonna scream for joy!!! Yeeaaaaah!!!!
Aimee in someways reminds me of Carole King. Both extremely talented song writers and musicians. Different era and different music but incredible artists. Very impressive also how Aimee has kept herself in such great shape. Oh and those incredibly gorgeous beautiful eyes!
this video was part of the end credits of Melrose Place season 3 back in 1994 in 2 or 3 episodes because this song was included in the first official soundtrack of the show: Melrose Place The Music. I watched that show in a former mexican cable channel called TeleUno
Wow I've owned the live version of this song for years but never saw the video til now. I also just discovered Aimee was the lead singer for Til Tuesday. They made the song voices carry. I also own that and had no Idea it was the same person.I'm learning so much, this RU-vid thing is awesome lol.
I've been a fan of Aimee since she was hush hushing in Voices Carry. Even though I've followed her this long, she's one of the few artists that I wish I knew better, like casual acquaintances. I want to like her more and more and I want everyone to join me in liking her as much as we can.
❤ I could listen to Aimee 24/7. You have fit and moved every emotion I've had through life. Ms Mann... you are a genius of music...Thank you from a fan since the 80s.
This Aimee Mann 1994 Hit, "That's Just What You Are," Would Be Playing In America On Sirius XM's The 90's On 9, Music Choice's The 90's, Sirius XM's Lithium, Music Choice's Classic Alternative, Music Choice's Rock, And Syndicated Radio's Backtrax USA: The 90's.
The comment section: 28% talking about Opal/Steven Universe 70% talking about how good this song is 1% talking about how creepy it is 1% talking about the clothes
I was watching clips at 3 in the morning back in the 90s, and saw this girl naked in the back of a double decker bus, some black school girls and milk everywhere. It was another very strange song.
