Great video. I have a horse III and I just changed the belt with the same one in video. When I readjusted the directional lever block, I found that when I put lever down to forward position ,the handle is much lower than before and it actually hits the tine shroud when put in gear. Did I adjust something wrong?
SOB . . . learnt something today, was just about to order a pair of belts under assumption that a belt was missing. Thanx ever so much, now can proceed with repowering junk pile tiller and see how things work out.

the original was called garden way and garden way is in the casting. it has two sheaves but only 1 bely that can be moved from one set of sheaves to change speed
I have 1981 8hp electric start horse which is very similar. I can not get the belt off. How did you get nit so loose that you were able to easily remove belt?
I got brand new 9245 OEM belts for mine , I maxed out the adjustment tightener and it barely ingages , what do I do? Do I need new sheaves? Very expensive too
I dont know. I find it hard to believe that sheaves wore out. Double check the belt size and engagement lever. I have more videos on tillers. Perhaps look them over.
Problem , solved , amazingly , the small engine shop confirmed right belt , so, I just asked for an inch smaller , he had one from a mower outfit , works like a harm...enjoy your programming !
Hello I'm wondering about what direction that the tines are supposed to be going? If going in gear forward the tines are going the same direction causing the tiller to buck and grab a hold and pull your arms off about on new ground or when it hits hard ground. My other tiller tines go the opposite direction when in forward gear. It digs in and tills the ground. Any help would be appreciated .
They turn in the direction of travel. Adjust the depth control to keep from digging too deep. If the tines turned the opposite direction then the tiller would lunge towards the operator if it hung up.
How can i tell whether i have a horse 1 or horse 2? I've been running mine with 2 belts since that's what it had when i bought it (used) 5 years ago. Now you've made me wonder if those two belts have been fighting each other
@@KevinKalden Good morning, sir. I was trying to replace the belt following your directions, but I couldn't. The space between the low pulley and the carcase is to small to insert the belt (1or 2 mm). Trying to figure out what was wrong, I could see that your pulleys are align (high pulleys are in the same direction than the low ones) and mine are not. I think that's the cause the tiller is not working properly, I though it was because the belt was old. Can you please tell me how to align the pulleys, please. I would really appreciate it. @@ORLARAUZ Each pulley assembly has two different sizes of sheaves. The biggest diameter of sheave (pulley) on each assembly is opposite from the smaller on the opposing assembly. So the bigger top sheave drives the smaller bottom sheave etc. is your set up this way? Are you using a Troy bilt belt? I have not taken my sheaves off but they should be like other sheaves. There should be a set screw holding it to the shaft. It should be a Allen type screw. Soak it with PB Blaster and let it soak in. Clean the hole where the Allen wrench goes with a pick to makes sure your Allen wrench goes in as deep as it can. Use the proper size of Allen wrench. I do not know the size. Be patient and re think things before you strip out something or break the Allen wrench in the hole. Once the set screw is out you should be able to pry the pulley off. I hope this helps.
The best post on these. I recently got a 2 or 3 tiller that was a uhaul rental unit in orange and motor white. I'll be trying the switch and hearing adjustment. It has the removable tine unit for a generator that was made. Thank you
Thanks again for the sharing your knowledge and the video. I just learned that mine is a Horse 3 because it has the PTO engagement lever. Also I learned that it is a 4 speed instead of a 2 speed due to the different size sheaves. Excellent video!

Using the Ariens Rocket to plant the garden, and finishing up a Craftsman rear tine tiller. The friction disc just arrived a couple of days ago for reverse gear. Picking up a BCS 830 in a couple of weeks and need to get a Farmall Super AV running that's been sitting for 20 years.

I got this form Troy Bilt site. The 5th character of our 11 character product serial numbers will indicate the last number of the year that it was manufactured. I am not a Troy bilt mechanic just an enthusiast. Thanks for watching my video.
These are great videos, My dad is 92 and on his fifth Troy built, bought new the transmission went out under warranty, took it back replaced transmission . He had to pay labor cost , still does not work right. My question,Does anybody know any shops in Central Arkansas that actually know how to work on a Troy built?
@@wisconsinfarmer4742 your right. This was a Troy built dealer here in Arkansas, I have fixed it myself, has far as buying another Troy Built, it won’t happen. My Dad has folks come to him for gardening tips from all over, he no longer recommends Troy built.
Wow, You are the best!!! Thank you so much. I had been told it was a bear to change out the belt. And then I saw the two pulleys and was totally disheartened since I had called Troy Bilt and was told I only needed one belt which I ordered, belt # 9245. Your tiller is the same as mine...an antique
That's very informative. I have a question though. I got my horse 3 from a friend and it missing the speed lever and the roller on the forward neutral reverse assembly is worn and it difficult to shift from forward to neutral. Where's the best place to get replacement parts?
Aimless, you are good, real good, the best. I have changed my belt a bunch of times successfully and I have no idea how I did it. Each time was a dreaded call to combat. @@KevinKalden I picked up my first one last year for $75 knew we had a blown motor original find another motor for $10 I never seem to get it running so that went outside I picked another one up supposedly all it needed was a carburetor in a muffler yeah that wasn’t true either paid a little too much these things are like Cadillacs parts of pricey lease up here in the Northeast
@@milwsdl39 yea this time last year I had none. When people started hoarding food the wife and I decided to start gardening. Had to borrow our neighbors front tine tiller. Over the summer I started buying troy bilts in need of repair. Now I have 6 in different states of repair.
I bought a Troy built horse 1 from a old lady, said it didn’t run. Found stuck intake valve replaced carburetor, runs awesome but needs adjustment on forwards & reverse. Your videos are helpful. Thanks
