Just as a reminder: at least for my TB mower the drive belt is 754-0467, BUT stay with the Troy Bilt brand. Why? Because some of the "generic" brands will not work well. The last one I tried was an improper fit can caused WAY TOO much resistance and work for the drive shaft.

If I could do it all again and if you’re just replacing the belt, I would just use a socket and an extension to turn that pulley while feeding the new belt into the guide. I don’t think removal of that fan was absolutely necessary. Let me know if that works for you?

Glade i didn't buy one! he hee but i did get a lemon on the Craftsman T 140, The transmission belt kept jumping threw the belt guard on the pully! IDK HOW IN THE WORLD IT CAN DO IT? Its a mystery! i check the idler pullies out. tension spring all looks good. Its a new riding lawn mower that 6 months old. I can't take it back to them. 30 day warranty But it still keeps jumping out of the belt guard, and it close to the pully. 🤪 So i parked it and use my dependable Pony. I'll work on it a cooler day

Thank you Dan for the video, (my wife won't help me push the tractor, LOL). I have a question, maybe you can help me, Coincidentally, I recently changed the drive belt and I don't know if that will be the cause of my problem, I have a Troy bilt pony (2011), now I can only control the speed with the throttle lever, even when I put it in rabbit mode the motor goes at high rpm, but the ground speed is about half the normal speed; the (yellow on mine) speed control lever doesn’t work, it goes up and down without locking the notches, offers no resistance and does nothing. (however, the engaging of the parking brake action works fine). I opened up the mower and saw the yellow speed control lever attached to a connecting rod which is attached down there to the cupped metal piece in the correct position as the new Troy Bilt Pony I saw yesterday at Home Depot, but besides allowing to be put in in park position, I don’t see it attached to anything else, is it right? How does it regulate the speed if it is not connected to anything else? Thank you in advance.

Hello, this is a very educational video. I just bought a Troy Built Bronco. 20 hp courage, 42" cut. Garage kept. Very nice mower. But it seems like it is going faster in reverse than in forward drive. I was thinking of starting with the drive belt. Would really appreciate any insight on this issue.

As long as you don't lean it past like 90* of its normal orientation, you should be fine. Also leaning it rearward is typically fine. It's usually only an issue if you lean it too far towards the carburetor side of the engine.

1 second ago Just figured out an easy way to remove hydrostatic transmission fan so you can get the belt off much easier. Take out the four bolts that build the body to the axle, put long 5/16 or quarter inch bolts in their place. Put a bottle jack under the trailer hitch Lift the body up in about an inch to an inch and a half and the fan will slide right off of the shaft.

Good video ---- BUT there is ALOT more to this than what you showed. You much have had all that apart before - I almost never got the blot out of the front pulley ---- ON VERY TIGHT --- used pull handle and regular socket - no need for deep well - they slip off too easy - reg. socket better - ++++ a brushing ? came off of top of pulley as it came all the way out. ++++ taking the fan nut off was hard too as it turned - had to hold it with c-clamp ------ not back on yet -- DOES GIVE A GOOD OVERVIEW OF THE JOB whatever someone in town wants to charge to do this IT IS CHEAP AND WELL WORTH PAYING SOMEONE ELSE TO DO LOL

bugman971 use electric impact on engine drive pulley and the fan/rear drive pulley. And make sure you set an LOC the parking brake. That way you can actually install the belt and take it off very easily. It’s a 15 minute job with the correct tools

Very good explanation!! Another good idea to do when the deck is off is to clean all the grass and debris from the top and bottom.. Deck fires do happen.. its not worth it to risk it.. I blow the whole tractor off after every mow.. sometimes in the middle of mowing.. it really helps a lot when doing jobs like this to have a clean working environment 😁👍🏼
@asysz
@asysz 4 года назад
Thanks MNpicker! Yea, people don’t realize that is what kills most mowers is a rotted deck. I usually combine the leaf blower and the air compressor to get them all good and clean.

A decent Video, good pointers, but the mark of a good mechanic is one who keeps cleans his work area as he goes. Dan just slaps the dirty cutting deck with all the old grass and crud laying there right in front of him to pulled up into the works when starts it. I realze the deck will get dirty again when its used, but really - a mite of time to blow it clean before he reassembles it.

On my TB Super-Bronco: I had to loosen up the 3 bolts to the variable speed pulley assembly where the upper & lower belts run to get enough room to get the belts on / off. Also, instead of trying to take the heavy duty spring off (and back on) of the idler pulley for the upper belt, I rigged up a binder strap around the back of the tractor and compressed the spring that way to finish up the upper belt install. There's also a belt retainer screw & bushing that had to come off to get the old belt off, new one back on. It's accessible through a hole strategically drilled on the bottom 'skid' plate. Putting the mower deck back on was painful too until I shimmed up the front about 2", then was able to get the rear pins installed. All in all, what a pain to replace these belts, but I'm appreciative of this video, thanks.

One question.... Befor u took of the front pulley, did u drain the oil in the engine? I have a 2017 troybilt bronco and I have seen videos where ppl take that front pulley off with no oil coming out. If I take it off of mine oil starts leaking as soon as I turn the bolt few times. Am I missing something?
@asysz

Whoa, that’s strange. You shouldn’t get any oil come from the crank shaft. I’m not really sure where you’re getting oil from. I wonder if your lower crank seal is leaking oil into the top of the pulley and you’re getting some come out when you remove the bolt. What engine do you have? A Kohler courage?

Maureen, if I were to do this again, I would not remove that nut holding the fan on. I realized during reassembly that the metal guard that helps hold the belt on has a little flex to it. This is an outstanding video and all the work you have done. Is there anyway I can contact you and ask you a question. I will add the description of my problem and see if I get any feedback. I have a new version of that mower and I have had nothing but problems with it. The good part is it always starts and runs fine And drive the mower very smooth at all speeds. No surging or vibrations anywhere. However,..as soon as I engage the deck the vibrations rattle the entire mower, and worse at high speeds. When I engage the Drive forward it will cut fine and pretty smooth except for the vibration of the deck. It seems the deck is not rigid from side To side and floats. This allows for a lot of vibration. When the mower is moving and the engine is running at medium speed the motor sounds fine. However the cutting deck “Surges” up and down in speed. There is no change in the drive speed,..just the deck. The change is constantly going up And down in speed. I took it to the warranty service center and they took a week to check it out and replaced the deck belt But could not find anything else wrong with it. If I have your correct email address I could send you a video of the problem And hopefully you could help. Bud
@asysz
@asysz 4 года назад
Hey Buddy, my email is d_werling@live.com Initially thinking about it, I would remove the deck belt and make sure that your blade spindles move freely and make no strange noises. Also check all of your other idler pullies. The next thing I would check would be the physical condition of the blades. Make sure they don’t seem excessively worn, or most importantly, bent. See if you can remove the blades and balance them. The blades are heavy and something out of balance could easily cause your vibration issue. Lastly, how does the tension in the deck belt look? Does the belt have a tensioner that you can see while the deck is engaged? See if it looks like the tensioner is moving back and forth a lot. The fact that the deck hangs like it does actually does a lot to reduce vibration. It’s like the motor mounts in your car. If you didn’t have the rubber motor mounts, you would feel a lot more vibration. I hope some part of this helps, still feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
