I grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC. I had a class in high school where the kid in front of me had a single mom on welfare (lawyer dad skipped town and stay-at-home mom couldn’t get a job to fully support 4 kids) and the kid behind me had their dad in the US Congress. I was where I belonged - in the middle. It was a great learning experience for me and I try to pass those lessons on to my son.

I’m 61 now. When I was growing up I was given work boots instead of runners, and one pair of footwear per child was all my family of 4 could afford. We were “poor” and living in the country. There was always wood to split so work boots made sense. I wouldn’t wish that life on anyone but god how I miss it.

I grew up poor with a single mom and 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Always ran out of food midway through the month and would eat goolosh (a mesh up of anything we found in the pantry), or bread and dry cereal we got from food pantry donations. I didn’t get new clothes or shoes, I wore my sisters when she grew out of them, even if they were to big. Lived in a car with my mom, her boyfriend and my 3 younger siblings in the high desert of California, stayed with family members and family friends in between. When we did have a place, we often did not have electricity and one year lived in a mobile home in El Mirage and we went without electricity and water for the majority of that time. Would go ask my neighbors if I could fill a bucket with their water from their water hose so I could bathe myself and did the same for my younger siblings. We (kids) would make a fire in a large metal barrel and put the metal rack from the oven on the top and would use that to cook oatmeal or noodles. Would also use water we got from the neighbors to flush our toilet. This is where I learned “if it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown flush it down.”. I was an outcast at school because of my appearance which I really couldn’t help much seeing that I was 11 years old and couldn’t make money to pay for electricity, water, clothes and food. But when I was twelve, I would babysit kids so that I could buy the necessities for my siblings and I. My mother and her boyfriend at the time were drug addicts. We would go days without seeing them. Yeah, it was a rough upbringing but I praise God for it because it humbled me and made me a person of little need for material belongings or the need to be the coolest kid at school and now in adult life so peer pressure is a bit easier to overcome. But I credit my overcoming those rough times to God because if not for His strength in my weakness, I would have desired to find my own strength in the things of the world which are temporary and will wither away just as we do. He set my path for Him which is a death TO sin rather than a death IN sin. All glory and honor and praise to God, Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
