In this video I show to how to play Ain't Talking' 'Bout Love by Van Halen. This song is a little basic on the surface but there are a lot of neat Eddie Van Halen tricks and things in this song that are fun to analyze and learn!
Marty, you are hands down one of my favorite guitar channels on YT. Great playing, fun lessons and explanations are just spot on. Thank you, my dude. I hope your channel continues to grow - you deserve it! Keep up the great work. I love these deep dives on the VH songs.
Hi Marty, I just discovered your channel and really like your instruction and approach. I'm a 60 year old beginner/intermediate player, love the blues and this is my first van Halen song. Thank you for sharing. 👍
A song I’ve learned so long ago, but always seem to botch. Another great lesson for working on the chops. Trash can ending made me chuckle. Thanks Marty for making the old seem new! I look forward to these lessons.
Marty you got it right when you said simple with alot going on always had a bit of trouble getting it to sound just right but it's all in the details loved that Trash Can Ending ! 🤣👏🤘
A real peach, for me....top of the pile...better known than Happy Birthday...and this is deffo one that you need to know and be prepared to rip it out for the crowd...I really like playing around the tune a bit, it's helping me nail down vibrato and some whammy techniques \o/ love it.
Hey Marty. Good to see you playing that Jackson soloist with that beautiful northern lights finish! EVH always has alot of intriguing details to his playing. That's what makes him the KING. I love fx too! Edward was a master at using effect 's One of my favorite songs to play because of it's simplicity. Great playing as well Marty. Thanks for teaching all the interesting nuance's of Ed's playing! And as always Thanks for sharing the love my brother 🙏
watched this one a couple times .... finally got through it in full.... keep the VH tutorials coming ... also like when you answered questions about gear you regretted giving away ... i , unfortunately have a lot of those stories
I'm a left-handed guitar player I play with the strings upside down like Albert King I play a straight A minor and I go up to I hit the F and I hit the g and I go back to the D with an open G then I go back with the aid of the G with the c to the B and I go from the a to the D to the e and then I do the hokey pokey and I just turn it all around that sounds great
That was great Marty! I still have a old Wolf Marshall Guitar One magazine from around 95/96 that has the tab for this song (showing my age now😂) it was the first song that I really learned to play well and it is still a blast! Thanks for posting!
Thanks Michael! It’s a riff I took from one of my instrumental songs and created my intro with it!. You’re welcome also, I’m happy to hear you like the lessons and I appreciate the support on the channel. 🙌
This was the first VH song I learned I was totally stoked! Totally agree on the verb & delay everyone always bitches at me It about it. Good covering effects and right hand mute technique.💪
Thanks so much! I really need to take the time and do that. I never seem to just sit down and save and share presets etc. I will have to get to work on that!!
Not too bad, and I know these videos are tough to make. But I just had to kind of chime in a little. I know if you gave it another listen-or even slowed down parts to get it better idea-you would hear parts that are very different from how you’re playing them. And most probably would not know, until learning it themselves with more focus on all the little details. Not to be too picky, but I just wanted to shed some light on a few parts for people that really want to get all those little details just right. First of all, you have to tune at least a half step down, or to the album if you are ever going to play any early Van Halen- besides Hot for Teacher. Just takes a second, and it sounds very different in standard. Anytime Eddie goes back to that main intro, riff, in some form or another, there’s no slide on the A string to C, on the turnarounds where he triggers the flanger. Some are a quick palm mute on the open E… before the three note turnaround with a flanger and some pinch harmonics. But most of the time it’s a muffled G, E string third fret. So got to have your foot ready, on the Flanger, every three note turnaround throughout the whole song-if you really want to get it. Or if you want to run around a little more, and not be tied to the pedalboard, you could leave the phaser on a little and get a pretty similar effect. On that bridge with harmonics, just listen closely, slow down to 50% here on RU-vid, to get the right patterns. He only uses a slight whammy on the third set of harmonics. Then with the solo, make sure you really got the B and E string tuned up well-together. A lot of you may know, Ed would detune the B string on songs where he does a lot of double stop on the G and B, like with runnin’ with the devil and others. You don’t wanna get too bogged down with all the different tempered tuning Edward do. But the B string, that’s a very easy adjustment, and very essential. And there’s not very much tremolo picking in the solo, just a few spots here and there. Although, Eddie does a little more live. But it’s much more subtle than you are playing here. And the last lick of the solo, down in the 17th position, it’s very different from what we see here. People can look online, or listen closely. And there’s also an open E ringing out throughout the lick. Much trickier lick than it might sound like at first. I didn’t listen after that. I’m being very picky, snd I’m one that loves to take the time, and has the time, to listen closely. I know most people probably don’t. Just wanted to add a little bit to this video. Thank you! 😝🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸
Great videos Marty. Ive got a question for you. I got hooked on playing van Halen after hearing you play it and would like to know the tone settings for “Ain’t Talking bout love” on your Hughes and kettner? I have a grand meister 36 and would like to get as close to the sound as possible. Any tips would be greatly appreciated
Marty, your intro has one note wrong on the arpeggio, you have A=0 D=2 G=2 D=2 it should be A=0 D=2 B=1 G=2 try it that way along with the recording, it sounds right. Still just holding the Am chord.. Let me know what you think?
I hear it done both ways. Early VH may have done the minor thir(c) on the b string but when you hear him play it live especially Hagar era I hear him do it like I play. I think I've morphed it so many ways over the decades. Lol. Either way is good and gets the job done 😎🤟🏻
I tried for years to play that “A minor “ chord in the man riff…it sounds like he is picking it twice…Come to find out,it’s a short slap back delay, with one repeat,so it slaps back as you hit that A chord….I stuck a short delay in front of the amp on my AxeFXIII,and there it was…but it’s gotta be in front of the amp…He did that all over that record…Just sharing that little tip that I stumbled across….Your tone is great on this though..The Fractal stuff sounds amazing..Would love to see your presets…
I have got the exact same guitar, nice little axe for an Indonesian build isn't it?!? I just change hardware for Gotoh one and sand the transition between the gloss finish on the body and the satin finish of the neck... It was horribly annoying for me!
I love it,but haven’t played it enough to get bothered by the neck gloss/satin thing yet. Good idea though! I love the color and the tone. The fret markers are cool. 😎🙌
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Yes you're right, that's a pretty good neck thru Jackson! At first I was a bit anxious about the country of origin but in fact the work they did on these guitars is quite excellent... The problem with the 2 type of finishing (gloss on body and satin on neck) is that there is a gap between them at the "heel joint" due to the thickness different of the two. You can clearly feel this difference in the thickness and it drove me mad😄 So I sanded this area to get rid of this ennoying feeling I had when I hit the upper frets, today this guitar is a little gem with an undeniable build quality and the Jackson comfort you can expect from their US guitars but for 3 times less!!
Excellent tutorial. But the intro is so damn hard! My timing is poor. I’m having trouble getting back into a minor after bending A-3-2-3-. And I’m playing very slowly.
Sometimes, E, sometimes G, not both. Or not that I have noticed yet. I’ve been really going over this song quite a bit the past few weeks for an upcoming gig. So hard to hear a lot of the details. So it’s kind of an ongoing process… picking up something new, even after decades of playing and listening. But I love the process, when you got it down and are just getting all the fine details just for yourself, really. And for for a great challenge. 😝🤘🏻🎸🔥
The intro is wrong. The first four notes are 0 2 1 2 on the A minor. On the second time thru, he made a mistake on the pattern of the F chord. Its 0 1 on the E string 1 1 on the B string and then the last 2 times its the same first pattern. When you do the G part the third note is G on the 6 string not the open higher G string. I've seen very few teach that mistake in the pattern the second time thru. He plays it the same every time live, so I assume it was a mistake but sounded cool so they left it.
Eddie never made any mistakes in the studio. That’s how he played it live in the studio-always changing and improvising. None of these songs were notated or charted out. They just played. Of all the great things he did on those albums, you think that was a ‘mistake?’ As for the last part, talking about the G or open G, I wasn’t clear on what you were referring to there.
Killer Jackson you have there! You are playing this wrong from the very start. Even your tab on the upper left corner is wrong. The third note is on the first fret, not the second fret. Also, Eddie doesn’t slide into the c to b part where he kicks on the flanger. He hits the low E slightly palm muted and then goes c to b on the A string. I wondered why it didn't sound right when you played it, and that is why.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker pretty different, actually! We did a good job. I’m sure if you listened closer, to add more to the song, you would hear it. Some just some of us just have more of an eye for detail. I can also see where a lot of people hear that everything Eddie did was pretty different and tricky.
You're right that it's wrong, but you're wrong about what's wrong. The opening notes should be A E C A, not A E A E. He should be hitting the A string, D string, B string, then G string.
Marty this vid is great except the first riff is completely wrong!!! And also the first fill is completely wrong too it’s insane how do you get it this wrong!
