Ainz made his character mostly as a role playing build, an undead Overlord. However, his unique build let him amass far more spells/skills than was allowed(the average player has around a 100, his build has *700+* ). He was a fan of flashy, chance taking instant death magic. Let me reiterate how powerful the skill *The Goal of All Life is Death* is: it's a skill that buffs instant death magic to kill *anything* , despite even natural resistances. What you see after the spell is the ground, the landscape, the atmosphere, _even the air_ , all DEAD, as they were all "alive".

Just a quick rundown on the skill Ainz used at the end there. The Goal of All Life is Death is an ultimate skill obtained only through a very specific character build where one must reach the racial class of Overlord the pinnacle of the undead and specialize in necromancy and instant death magic all while also being level 95. By doing this you'll achieve the Eclipse class and once you reach the max level of 5 in it will obtain the skill The Goal of All Life is Death. It is one of the most powerful skills in Yggdrasil, it works by delaying an instant death spell by 12 seconds and in return guarantees the spell will work on all targets of the spell. This is unbelievably powerful because players would equip themselves with items that grant resistance or immunity to instant death magic or if the player is a specific heteromorphic race such as undead they're inherently immune to instant death magic. The Goal of All Life is Death is indiscriminate, there is no such thing as resistance or immunity to it's effect. If it is used you will die unless you kill Ainz before the skill completes nothing could escape the power of the true lord of death, a life-consuming Eclipse. This comes directly from the novel and describes the effects of The Goal of All Life is Death. "Then, Ainz’s trump card took effect. In that moment - the world died. This was not metaphorical. Everything died. The Einherjar evaporated into white mist as it couched its lance, and dispersed before Ainz’s eyes. Even a homunculus with no concept of life died instantly. Shalltear’s familiars shared the same fate, unable to resist the destruction which overtook them. That was not all. Even the air - which was not even alive to begin with - fell into death. For over 100 meters in all directions, the air was no longer breathable. If any living creature tried to respire within that area, their lungs would be corrupted by the deadly air, and they would die. Neither did the land escape the embrace of death. The terrain in a 100 meter radius was instantly transmuted into sand. Only Shalltear and Ainz could move in this world, where only death remained." Overlord Volume 3 The Bloody Valkyrie.

The voice on the watch is is one of the guild mates Bukabuka Chagama ( she is a voice actress in real life and gave that watch to ainz as a gift) she is also the creator of the twin dark elves aura and mare.

To explain the skill The Goal of All Life is Death: It's basically a buff skill that allows Instant death magic to bypass any resistance or immunity, but because Ainz is now in the new world that skill actually became stronger it didn't just allow spell to bypass defenses but also allowed Ainz to impose Death in anything that's why the ground turned into sand, the soil lost all nutrients and moisture and turned into dry coarse sand, the air actually also "died", it's now unbreathable in a certain radius, of course all living things in the area also died.

in the last two episodes you will see Ainz's cleverness in managing battle strategies pvp

Ainz views the denizens of Nazerick as the children of his friends. They are young, inexperienced, naive and in the beginning they are only as their creator (his guild mates and friends) made them. Overview of episode + fun facts: -Ainz separates from Aura and Mare, who are now equipped with two World Items, to go fight Shalltear alone. Aura and Mare patrol the area. -Demiurge returns to Nazarick, and upon finding out Ainz plans on fighting Shalltear, panics. Demiurge is probably the smartest and most logical NPC. -Reminder: Shalltear was designed to be a raid boss that protects three whole floors of Nazarick, and requires multiple high level players to defeat. Ainz fighting her solo is very risky, but fortunately, he knows Shalltear quite well, has some tricks up his sleeves, and is a master tactician. -Ainz goes up to Shalltear, who is in standby mode, and casts Body of Effulgent Beryl, a 10th tier spell that increases the user's resilience against bludgeoning attacks, since skeletal beings are especially weak to bludgeoning damage. He notices that unless he directly attacks Shalltear, she won't go into battle mode. He casts a bunch of other buffs and activates a super-tier spell, Fallen Down. Super-tier spells don't use MP, but have an extremely long cast time, can only be cast a limited number of times a day, and has a long cooldown. In Yggdrasil, it was common to attack players casting super-tier spells since they are vulnerable for a long time. Ainz purposely casted this spell to see if there are any players in the area who would attack him, but there were none. While waiting for the super-tier spell to finish casting, Ainz puts on Bukubukuchagama's Wristwatch and arms himself with Quick-Change Items (you'll see their use in the next episode). -Ainz casts Fallen Down, and Shalltear goes into battle mode. There is some confusion on why she must fight Ainz, but she concludes that she must kill him since he attacked her. -Ainz and Shalltear exchange several attacks with each other. -Since Ainz is a magic caster, once he runs out of MP, he basically loses. Shalltear, on the other hand, can fight as long as she has HP. -Shalltear creates a clone of herself using Einherjar, an ability given to her by Peroroncino. -Ainz manages to defeat her clone. -Ainz uses his trump card, Skill: The Goal of All Life is Death, which boosts the effect of instant death magic and skills. The boosted magic/skill can even bypass immunities or resistance. However, there is a cost: delayed cast time, which can be seen on the clock that was behind him. He casts Widen Magic: Cry of the Banshee, an AOE spell that causes instant death. Combined with Skill: The Goal of All Life is Death, it was able to bypass Shalltear's instant death immunity. This spell causes the surrounding area to turn into sand. -Shalltear dies, but is brought back to life by a resurrection item given by Peroroncino. Ainz is now low on MP, but Shalltear's HP is full. End of episode. -As you may have noticed, Yggrasil magic comes with various enhancements, here are three of them: -Maximize Magic: an enhancement that eliminates the RNG to maximize the damage output of the spell. -Twin/Triplet Magic: an enhancement that allows the user to create two/three copies of the same spell without having to take time to cast the spell again. -Widen Magic: an enhancement that increases the area of effect of the spell.

It's an explanation in the light novel, but the anime is pretty much show-no-tell due to lack of time. Ainz's plan was: Take worse equipment (although it must be added that it is mainly design-wise) and use a spell with a long cast time. Which most players would use to attack. If an experienced player from Yggdrasil with a world level item was waiting there, elf twins would defeat him with their world level items. Plan B was to simply beat Shalltear through his superior tactical skills and later revive her. (And flex if someone is looking to scare them)

Hi, friend. Wow, there is so much to tell about this epic battle, which is only fully understood in light of the novels! But I think you've noticed how special it is. For years, anime have tried to represent combat that follows the logic of a video game, like Sword Art Online for example, but this is the first one I've seen that actually follows the reasoning of one. This entire battle was designed keeping in mind that Shalltearr had to be killed twice because her creator, Ainz's friend Peroronchino, had given her an Instant Resurrection Item, which luckily doesn't also restore mana. That is why we see her intact at the end of the chapter. From the beginning Ainz had many disadvantages. To begin with, his game character was not designed for PVP matches but mainly for his own entertainment and ROL. In DOTA terms he would be a “Support” who can also play as a “Semi-Carry”. Instead, Shalltear is a pure “Carry” designed for combat against many players. After all, She is the only one in charge of defending not one but 3 floors and the strongest of all the Guardians. Also, as a vampire, Shalltear is quite resistant to Ainz's necromancy, but she can also do holy magic that is quite effective against Liches. Fortunately, there is a limit to the number of these Skills that can be used per day. Much of Ainz's plan for this battle was designed to get Shalltear to spend them all before the end. Finally, Ainz felt guilty about the current situation, so he decided to punish himself by changing his divine equipment to a lower quality one, which further increased his disadvantage. So, yes, this battle was very difficult and it is a great triumph that it has reached this point. Of course, it's not that Ainz is weak either, it's just that his powers don't work well against Shalltiaer's. But still he is a pure mage who managed to win a lot of PVP at the time, although at first he always had to lose a few rounds until he learned the best method to win. Also, in Yggdrassil the limit of spells that could be learned was 300, but Ainz got a special class that allowed him to learn more than 700 spells. We saw a bit of this early on, in the buff number he put on before he started fighting. Shalltear's Einherjar is a construct-type avatar almost visually identical to Shalltear. This Avatar cannot use magic and some of the abilities of the original, but his equipment and stats are the same. But “The Goal of All Life is Death” allows you to overcome all those barriers, as long as the instant death effect occurs in exactly 12 seconds. Naturally this is a very difficult thing to achieve and any gamer will tell you that timing an attack within 12 seconds is nearly impossible in the middle of a match of, say, "Overwatch" or "Half Life", but Ainz is one of the 13% of players who have perfectly mastered the art of synchronizing spells. So, the magic used against Shalltear is called “Cry of the Banshee” which kills everything that touches the sound within a large area of land. But the effect is enhanced by the ability "The Goal of All Life is Death" and that is why, according to the novel, literally everything died: The creatures, the Einherjar clone, Shalltear, the earth, the plants and even the air... Everything died. And so in the end the battlefield turned into a desert. Well that's it. I'd tell you about Mare and Aura's World Items, but I might end up with a spoiler. I hope I have been helpful. The funny thing was that her character was a slimy slime and unpleasant to look at, but she purposely used a cute voice to provoke laughter. The skill "The goal of all life is death" is essentially a bypass, the magic he casted "cry of the banshee" is a insta death spell but shalltear is to high level to be affected, the goal of all life is death literally bypasses all resistances to death spells and when the spell activiated it literally killed everything, shalltear, the air molecules, the earth beneath them. Everything within the set range died. thats why at the end you see them in a sand dune, the ground withered away and died.

That "clock thing" is the trump skill of the overlord character. It is called, "the goal of all life is death" and it guarantees a 100% success rate with any instant death spell. It has a cooldown of 100 hours, and it takes 12 seconds to cast, in which time he cant use other magic spells or skills. Shalltear only "survived" because she had an item that instantly resurrected her. She trully died afterwards, then her item brought her back to life.

He doesnt really see the NPCs as friends, but more like his Children! after all he and his comrades created them, made them into what they are and is now in charge of them

The voice from the clock is from one of her friends who was the creator of the 2 elfs. Her work was as a voice actress in +18 games and the brother of her was another player of the same guild.

2:00 (Not a spoiler, requoting old info to say my point)I wouldn't really say that Ains is just doing what he needs to straight up. In this world, he's realistically the villain. People label him with the morally gray stamp bc he doesn't really see himself as evil per say, but by the world he's in he most certainly is. A good way to look at it since you don't like him killing is that he's an undead now. Since he made his transition into this new world, he fully became his character. He kept his human like train of thinking, but otherwise physically and emotionally he's become an undead. Doesn't need sleep, doesn't need to eat or drink. And bc his emotional and mental state changed, he feels literally nothing towards humans. He physically see's them as bugs usually, or for closer humans, tools or pets. It's explained a lot when he first went to Carne village to save it, he said he didn't feel anything when he killed humans, and after the first part of the battle he said he had grown fond of the villagers, like he would be of a dog. He also made a quote along the lines that he had physically and mentally stopped being human. Not to excuse his actions, but overall I think this distinction helps to show why he's killing, bc it truly doesn't mean anything to him anymore, at least when it comes to humans. Also the due you don't like, Demiurge, is loyal to Ains. He was making the point about him lying to show Albedo that Ains wasn't sure he'd be able to win, and therefore shouldn't have let him go alone

Ains has always been adept at gathering information and spreading misinformation, he has command of over 700 spells (due to his Overlord class).

man. I had to watch this series four times and then read the novel before I finally understood it. In terms of solo combat power, Shalltear is totally the stronger than Ainz. But as a relatively honest NPC, her limited knowledge of deception and pay-to-win items is a weakness. Love your commentary

I like how all magic spells in Overlord have names from which you knew what it does even if you never heared it before. Protective auras and buffs dont have scary names, AOI spells usually have long names, short range attacks have short names so it can be sayd fast in battle... (Antill something has some hidden effect.)

The fight and mostly the confusion in Shalltear is really good explained in the books.

Its not that she’s more powerful than ainz, its just a really bad matchup. Shalltear is one of the most powerful guardians, even more powerful than albedo. She’s specced into pvp, with lifesteal, second life, and all that kind of stuff while albedo is specced more defensive, while Ainz is just a poweful magic caster, not really a class thats good in a 1v1 fight but shines more in a group battle. Ainz super at a disadvantage in this fight in terms of abilities and class, thats why the only thing he can rely on is his wit and experience in pvp, which he has a ton considering how long he’s been playing the game.
