Love the builder tips and new format! Its everything I've always wanted from the commercial car shows that they've never done!

This is exactly the kind of stuff I love to see from seasoned fabricator channels. The welding and fab tips were excellent, but you cutting and re-welding that tube 5 times, and looking for your gloves, might have been some of the most inspiring content in this video. I can't explain it, but that just gave me a lot of confidence to keep pushing through my own setbacks and frustrations with the learning process. Thank you for keeping it real!

I noticed you did down passes on the Colorado front frame. When I was a structural steel welder, I was taught to always make up passes because they were stronger. Was that not correct? Does it matter?
@BigTireGarage
@BigTireGarage 2 года назад
Technically most structural welding calls for vertical up to prvent slag inclusion. Most of the time those welds are fluxcore or stick...but yes vertical up is the prefered methid

Great Episode!! best welding tip I ever got was from my friend Bill. I was basically stalled out on my welding growth, I was an acceptable welder, but Bill educated me on how to manipulate the puddle and basically it comes down to "the puddle will follow the heat". that little insight allowed me to get to the next level of welding (mig) and greatly improved my welds.

I'd love to hear some stories from your Extreme 4x4 days. Favorite build, least favorite build, best collabs etc. You and Jessi, may she rest in peace, had an awesome on screen chemistry. I won't say I don't like Power Nation, but it's no Powerblock!

Great video, great content!!!! Reading glasses tip was huge, 43 here and it's definitely getting harder to see the puddle. Question: when you embark on a build, how do you keep track of bolts/parts that you are going to perhaps re-use? How they go back together, etc.....? I am using the plastic bag approach with it all labeled. Tried to lay it out as much as possible how I took it off but a bit harder as the more parts accumulate the harder it is to take up huge spaces for a running order of putting it back together. But was wondering if there are any tips or tricks you have up your sleeve? Thanks again Chuck

Great episode. As I was watching the last couple of episodes of 4wheeler I was thinking about how much I missed the level detail you used to get into back in the day. What bores the casual TV viewer is what I am watching and hoping to see. So much better than watching the "install" of a brake kit on an axle that hasn't even been fully prepped for welding yet. I get that the bills need to get paid but some times it is painful to watch. I've been watching you since the very 1st episode of your very 1st show and can tell that this video shows the level of detail that is fun to talk about.

Another great Episode. Question what made you decide to build off road vehicles rather than going down the hot rod/custom cars. As a very novice welder it’s alright being told how to do stuff but for me it’s better to be showed how to do it just like you did in extreme 4x4. Glad your back on RU-vid

Why do drag race cars use motor plates on the front and rear to hold the engine in place but off-road uses standard side mounts
@jake1021
@jake1021 2 года назад
I'm going to guess. Probably incorrectly. That off-roaders generally have 9 pounds of shit crammed in a 5 pound bag routing everything is already a pain without adding two baby firewalls in the mix Only a guess.

Hey Ian been watching you build since you was on Saturday morning on the USA channel on powerblock. Late 90s early 2000s. You gave been a inspiration to me growing up an I've learned so much from watching you all these years. I started building myself a 95 YJ 5 years ago that everyone hates an then started building my wife an son a 1994 YJ an I am now disabled struggling to maybe get my wife an son's there jeep built. It's not extreme but I'm struggling pretty bad now. Parts laying everywhere. I've come to a part I'm kind of stuck building the front axle. 99-04 ford dana 60. Keeping leaf springs moving front axle up 6-7" on xj spring but steering has me stuck. Don't want full hydraulic steering so keeping gear box an keeping drag link an tierods up high. Can you help or do a video showing how this is done? Keep up the awesome work Ian. I great appreciate all you information an talking to us like we are human.

19:30 I hope you don't mind my making a suggestion. I'm sure you have one of those small magnets on a stick or a telescoping one. Ian - Great to see you back. As far as the air bump placement in a vertical aspect, that seems to be easily defined by where you want the axle to stop traveling upwards. What I have struggled with in the past in the landing pad. Depending on how you have your suspension setup, the axle will approach the chassis at a completely different angle when flexing, vs hitting bumps with both tires. Can you discuss how you build your landing pads with the above scenarios in mind?

On the rectangular tubing frame for the Colorado, is there a reason you chose to do butt joints rather than miter joints? I would imagine miter joints would be stronger, and no hollow sections would need to be capped.
