JustPlanes releases its AIR CANADA Winter Operations Cockpit Film. On this video you see a presentation by the pilots on how the de-icing procedures work before takeoff as the Embraer 190 about to operate flight AC1121 from Toronto Pearson to Saskatoon taxies to the De-icing area at Pearson Airport.
The complete 4h20min Cockpit Film includes 6 flights between Toronto, Saskatoon, Kelowna and Ottawa with plots doing a great number of presentations and many explanations about their work, the aircraft, the routes with a special focus on winter weather operations. Some of the nice bonuses of this film which is originally from 2012 and is now being made available in our Download Store include a low visibility approach into Kelowna and a special clearance by ATC to fly a scenic approach around Ottawa.

Wow! The Canadians are VERY well organised when it comes to de-icing. Special lanes all with traffic light and radio control. That is very impressive. Nice video! Thanks for letting us see how it all works.
@RyanHolliday211

It's not necessarily Canada as a whole. This is the largest airport in Canada and it is necessary to be very organized to keep up with the massive flow of traffic. Not all Canadian airports have this kind of setup.

@@RyanHolliday211 very true. At the smaller airports usually they have just 1 or 2 smaller trucks that spray the aircraft right at the gates. Toronto is by far the largest, but the other major airports have build "central de-icing facilities" of their own. Just not 6 massive bays. Usually like... 2 medium sized bays. At the REALLY small airports sometimes it's just some poor rampie on a ladder or if he's lucky a cherry picker with basically a garden sprayer on his back.

Thats a lot of slip-syrup! Named that because after a previously deiced plane sits in the hanger, the DI drips out all over the place. If you step in it unknowingly you're probably going to end up on your butt! It has an important job to do but mechs hate the stuff! Course theres also TKS equipped planes, also a pain in the butt! These aircraft instead of using heated leading edges or boots have the LE's laser drilled with tiny, tiny holes that weep out an gelled alcohol/glycol fluid. Also slippery and a pain to work on.

The Green is for conditions less severe, as judged by pilot/outside temps. For very cold temps with ice build up you go fo the Orange, Pink, Light. Red, same formula. Until I could see the books I thought there was a third color and maybe a fourth. I use a former ammonia anhydrous sprayer. bought from a farmer. You crank up the 6-20 hp engine like a lawnmower, switch to spray and you’ve got all the gychol you want.

Most airports do not have anything other than Type I and Type IV, including mine, where temperatures are frequently at -30 or lower with wind and active precipitation. What kind of hellish conditions consider that light?!

@Neferdias
@Neferdias 5 лет назад
There are, and he talks about the onboard de-icing equipment on the plane at about the 5:20 mark. The onboard equipment isn't designed to negate precipitation in such a way that would prevent potential issues during take off, so this extra step is used to ensure the safety of the plane.

In Seattle there is no space or reason for a de-icing apron. Instead, the de-icing crew comes to the gate apron and spray down the plane before pushback.
@GNX157
@GNX157 5 лет назад
Does the excess drain off of fluid get recycled for later use? How much does de icing cost per plane?
@MillionFoul
@MillionFoul 5 лет назад
Since they have a de-ice pad at that airport, the fluid is probably collected, and sent to a company which will clean, remix, and re-sell it. Deicing price varies quite a lot from place to place, I'd imagine it doesn't cost the airline overly much (Type 1 is propylene glycol/water, Type IV is pure glycol), but FBOs can charge over twenty dollars a gallon.

Here is a great example of CRM working like it's supposed to. Between 1940's and mid 1980's there was no such a thing as CRM and Captain's with huge ego and attitude problems caused a lot of crashes because they would intimidate their first officer so much that even if the captain was doing something wrong the first officer was to intimidated to say anything, some were so intimidated that even though they knew they were about to die they still didn't take control of the aircraft from the captain. One perfect example of that was a cargo Korean air(I forgot the flight number) 747 that crashed after takeoff, the first officer knew the captain was doing everything wrong and that they're about to die if he doesn't take control but he and the flight engineer still didn't take control from the Captain. After the crash a lot of first officers came forward and admitted that they were intimidated by that Captain, one first officer even admitted that one time during landing the Captain hit him in the head so hard that his head set fell off and all just because he wasn't performing the landing exactly the way the Captain wanted him to.
