Customers want every gizmo they can get, managers want to meet budget and time constraints, engineering gets the blame for trying to satisfy both. It is what it is, at some point I figured out that getting the blame was just part of my job, but prison seems a wee bit harsh.
Some Honda Engineers started with the Airbox and then built the Goldwing around it... after it was done they said "Oh well we can't change that anymore and frankly the dealer can make some money to install it for the customers."
Chris..You are the Man! Thanks so much for this vid. Before I watched it, I was scheduling my first routine service at a local bike shop. When I mentioned that I owned a 2014 F6B and needed the air filter (along with an oil change, brake and clutch fluid, and spark plugs changed), he returned an estimate of approx $1025.00. Immediately, I remembered the words of an old wise sage.."Why pay another man for what you can do on your own." With your help, I replaced the OEM filter with a K&N and changed the oil. (I'll check your vid on how to change the spark plugs). ONE NOTE - make sure you secure the nut springs that secure the left and right-side body panels. Two loose nut springs slipped off and fell down into the lower "belly of the beast." I was fortunate to fish one out with a small magnet. I'll replace the other one when it comes in from special order (Nut spring - 5mm Part# 90320-GE2-760). The next time your in the nation's capitol/Maryland area, let me know. Where else would they put the air filter? It’s not as bad as most people make it out to be as they claim it takes three hours. I know people who do it in an hour and a half. Some people joked that Honda laid the air filter on the ground and built the bike around it! 😂🤪😂

Watching you change the filter makes me appreciate what the dealer charges. Almost worth it to let them mess with it. Looks like a lot of shit that can accidentally be broken in the process of disassembling all that plastic.
Good job Chris. I did mine about 18 mos. ago and I'm due to do it again. Not an easy job. It requires patience and ( for me) about 4 hrs. of time. I enjoy all of your videos keep up the good work.

Well hello again Chris this is Emmett.. that was a great demonstration my friend but from all that work you had to do I think I will just let the dealer do that when I change out the filter when it's time to change out the filter but I will certainly buy that filter that can be washed and reused that's a great idea. I truly do want to save this my good friend they did not make this Goldwing mechanically friendly just watching all the changes you had to go through just to get to the air filter.. was just crazy... and I am truly going to let Honda manufacturers know this.. Oh and PS my friend you should let us know the tools that you are using such as the one you used to pull out cans with you should let us know the tools that you are using if they are magnetic tip or what have you we would like to know that that's very important.. but that Applause at the end of your demonstration was truly truly needed by friend for all of that work you had to go through just to get to the air filter I just had to laugh,,👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
DIY if you like wrenching & Saving $$$ I did mine on the 2012 GL1832 and will do it on my 2018 GL1833 DCT Tour and spend labor money from Honda on something else! Plus, I will know it's done correctly. Nothing like peace of mind and keeping the $$$ in my wallet.

thank you so much for the awesome video. I bought a beautiful red 2013 f6b. 48,000 miles. the air filter was occupied at one time by a family of mice. I feared that outcome but it was worse than I expected.
Chris, saw this and decided to give a look see. My hat is off to you, but I'm keeping my Harley. I'll break something on the GW. I can change my AF and do an oil change in all three holes by the time you get to your AF. Keep up the good content...
Chris thanks so much for this video. I was able to change my air filter using this video. It’s a level 10 project but it can be done. I have the confidence now to do it again some day hopefully years from now! The hardest part is some of the connectors especially the one just under the NAVI screen. I put in the same K&N high flow filter. My air box was full of field peas and what looked like maybe the cooked remains of a mouse. The previous owner obviously had this bike on a farm. So there’s my story. 🤪

came across your channel and Holy Cow batman, what a lot of work just to change out the air filter, and to top it off you have to put it all back together. Honda sure doesn't make it easy for ya on these Gold Wings. great video by the way.

I am currently in the middle of this job on my 2012. What a job! But, I have the videos from Cruisemans Garage and that really makes it possible, if not easy. Just takes patience. Don't do this job if you are in a time crunch, lol.

Good job, I would think there are,a lot of Goldwings, with original air filters in because the owners found this too expensive to service or to hard to do themselves
Great Video... However you have convinced me that an air filter change is way above my pay grade... Thought I would attempt it... After seeing this instruction video from beginning to end.. nope, well worth the money spent for the expert to do that!!! Thanks for the info!!
I asked one of the commenters below if the airbag module removal needs to be done and how to do it safely. They can be dangerous. Suggestions on a 14 airbag model?
I have a 2003 Goldwing with 52,000 miles on it. Replaced the air filter at 30,000 when I bought it. Guessed that after 22,000 miles the A.F. might need replacing. Nope! Looked as good as the day I put it in. I'll go 40,000 miles this time.

@@Matowix it's generall cost in the neighborhood of $500.00 to have your stock Goldwing air filter changed at the dealership, if you have accessories on your bike it will cost even more the extra labor time.
Yep. I did on my f6b.. because dealer wanted $640. Part and labor.. lol 5 hours job for me and I expend $60 in a K&N and couple bucks in a 6 pack.. lol
I bought an 08 Wing with 26k miles, 3 weeks ago. I changed my filter myself a few days ago because I refuse to be held hostage to a dealers extortion. I also refuse to be intimidated by a maintenance item. I bought Cruisemans excellent video series which I followed. With just this one task, the purchase price of the video series paid for itself. It did take me over 2 hours, but it looks harder than it really is. Just need to take your time and be methodical. Having half a brain helps too. All the fluids and plugs will be changed this weekend. Brakes too if needed but they look ok from what I can see right now
I use K&N filters but was pointed to RU-vid to review the many motorcycle and car reviews on whether K&N or the OEM filer provides better intake protection. All tests seem to suggest the OEM filter provides better protection and filters out more harmful particles. I am interested if these tests of benefit to simply staying with the OEM filter. One video by a Motorcycle mechanic showed long tear wear on outer piston and ring surfaces were significantly worse with long term K&N. Other video testing the car version showed particle pass through under pressures was measured in the thousand versus hundreds in Wix and Puralator filters. Just asking for anyone’s alternative thoughts or conclusions.
It would be so easy to have just given up the front box where the airbag goes to and some how incorporate a slide in air filter to the box but no, honda had to make this a crazy difficult task. Just insane.
They recomend you change the filter every 12,000 miles. But that depends on what part of the country you live in? If you live out in West Texas with all of that blowing dirt that's blows constantly you'll change that air filter before 12,000 miles.
You are correct, change the OEM paper air filter every 12,000 according to Honda but K&N recommends that you change their 10 year million mile K&N air filter ever 50,000 miles. Air filters should be changed more often in dirty environments.

I have a 2009. I have what may be a speedomter cable on top before I can remove all the crap before getting to the airbox. I didn't see you remove that. Maybe in a different spot on yours.

Hope you oiled that KN before installation, I always buy 2 so one is cleaned, oiled n dry ready for swap out. Thanks for showing us that it can be done, good winter project. Ride safe.
Unreal, all that just for air filter change. BTW, Is this a blood pressure monitor on your right arm LOL, I know my pressure would be through the roof doing it and cursing Honda for air filter location design. You take your time and know what you're doing but wonder how many of those panel clips/retainers/screws are broken or missing on all those used goldwings. Great job Chris, lots of patience needed for it to be done right. I ride ST1300 and can change air filter in 30-45 min. I taught that was too long till I came across your vid.
I have been looking for a new touring bike that is reliable, fun to drive, good looking, and most importantly... comfortable for my wife. For many factors and personal reasons I have narrowed it down to an Indian Roadmaster or a Honda goldwing. I think this video may have made my decision for me. All that work for just an air filter?!!! Wow. It's insane! It looks I love Honda, but it looks like poor design. It needs to be done regularly so how long before I break something, or pay thousands to have it done at a shop. I'm leaning toward the Roadmaster now. Am I crazy?
Very good video which helped me break down the shelter on my 2013 F6B and replace the air filter. How much does this cost at the dealership (I'd guess $300)... loved the applause when you finally got the air filter out! ha

I do have a question my friend again this is Emmett are the cleaning instructions for the filter is complicated as it was taking the bike apart and how will you know you've done a sufficient job in cleaning the filter this information you did not tell us and I will be waiting on your response..????
Cleaning and recharging K&N air filters are a piece of cake. I use K&N on my Harley and all my vehicles (4) and will now use on my 08 Wing this winter. I use the K&N recharging kit which is basically a spray cleaner that you let soak in, then wash the filter with a garden hose (not a pressure washer) then let it dry in the sun and then spray (recharge) the oil on all the filter baffles. It’s very easy to do but takes patience to let the thing dry once it’s cleaned. That’s why some guys buy two, so they have one ready to go while the other is being serviced. There are lots of videos on how to do it on Harley’s but the technique is the same in all applications. Just search ‘K&N Harley’ and you’ll find what you need
Ok awesonme job , However i used KN Permenant filter on my kawasaki and you had to put an oil on both sides before installing it. KN sells the products (2bottles) one to clean and one to put on the filter before installing it. I am curious why is that not done here. cuz that product is essential to catch any fine dust and prevent it ot from going to the pistons and improve the performance. thank you for a great video
I would love to have a Gold Wing..... I will NEVER own one when a simple air filter change requires me to risk spending hundreds of dollars replacing broken trim pieces as they grow old and brittle!. I'll keep the Harley that is stone-simple to wrench on! The only safe way to do the GoldWing maintenance is to have a Honda parts department in your workshop!
