This week’s Urban Valor episode features Navy and Air Force veteran Gary Mathieson. Gary was born on Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, where his father was flying B-52s as a Bombardier Navigator. Growing up around pilots his entire life inspired him to enlist in the military, and when the Gulf War began, Gary felt the need to serve. Gary’s job required him to be prepared to survive being captured, which entailed him partaking in strenuous training and overcoming his fear of claustrophobia and heights. Navigating the military lifestyle placed hardships on Gary and his family. On top of that, the superintendent for a school district he was teaching at did not support his military service, which created financial stress on his family.
Thank you so much for your service Gary! We appreciate you!

This was such an interesting interview. Thank you for your service Sir. Im so glad that your family was reunited and survived through your deployment. How dare that principal make those statements...how insensitive can one be ? My husband and i had a difficult reintegration after he came home from deployment. I, like many wives, worked a full time job in dental, took care of our son, paid the bills...so when he came home and tried to tell our son the opposite of a situation that had been settled already, i firmly but nicely told him that i had been in charge and to please respect my position as head of household for a while. We took a family vacation because we had saved so much money which helped to regroup as a family. BTW...i love all your interviews...

Air Force Vet!! Former maintainer and Flying Crew Chief…man, this was awesome! I got the opportunity to fly along side loadmaster on the C-5. For 10 yrs straight I was in the system. I couldn’t make it a full year without deploying, flying a mission, or being sent on an MRT. That life was crazy and stressful. I felt everything you said 🥹. The experienced aircrew guys always talked about the early days of the war, the surges and med-evacs. I never complained in front of them because I knew they had it way harder than I did 🇺🇸 🫡.

I like the teddy bear idea. What a treasure for your daughter. It's also very impressive you put in the time and effort needed to strengthen, repair, rebuild your marrige and family after your returning home and readjusting. I believe solid family units are as important to our nations success as is our defence capabilities. Good man, thank you!

Did the superintendent really say "play military"? How did they become a superintendent? Superintendent is a mental and emotional child.

The military is one big "fuck job". I wouldn't trade my 23+ years, even though it cost me my law enforcement career, but I sure as shit wouldn't do it again.
