The Biz Doc, Tom Ellsworth dives into case study #17 on Air Jordan's & How Nike Created a Brand Worth Billions .
In this case study - you will learn negotiation tips and how to go big on marketing when a game-changing deal is on the table.
It’s a story of a tense prolonged negotiation among giant companies that was won by Nike against the odds:
Adidas: a struggling company that had lost its founder and then lost its way in the cut-throat jungle of athletic shoes. Michael Jordan WANTED Adidas but they FUMBLED the opportunity.
Converse: The king of basketball was about to fall off the throne. They had Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Dr. J - but they were slipping and not innovating at a time when fashion was coming to athletic shoes. They were CONTENT to offer Michael Jordan the standard NBA player deal - but he wanted to see innovation and fresh ideas.
Nike: The leader in running shoes had recently told Wall Street that it had a financial loss. Worse, the 1984 Olympics saw Carl Lewis will gold medals in flashy Nikes but that didn’t translate to sales. They NEEDED Michael Jordan and they knew it. The incredible part is that Michael Jordan didn’t even want to go to the Nike meeting - his parents were talked into it by his agent!

I like how Nike was willing to listen to Jordan, his manager and Jordans parents. Making that deal to benefits both Nike and Jordan. I know not all companies do that.

Bizdoc, you have amazing story telling skills - very engaging, engrossing and captivating. You really add a lot of emotion, and tell the story as if everything has happened in front of you, and you are a live invisible commentator of the whole incidents / events / happenings. One can feel that this is your passion, your heart-felt mission, and that you put your heart and soul in telling these wonderful stories ...

My buddy and I bought the original air jordans the week they came out. I bought the red/white/black and my friend bought the red/black; then we swapped one so we had original mis-match Jordans. Mind you, the nba at this time still only had something tantamount to a cult following, and a lot of people didn't even know who Michael Jordan was, let alone what kind of shoes he wore, i.e., it took a little courage to wear them because they drew a lot of attention AND people didn't know that they were cool. Some of my classmates even laughed. As an aside, they also increased my jump by probably at least an inch, which I attribute to the added energy I had simply from the excitement of wearing them.

This is a really inspiring case study, Nike really had foresight and they made a great bet against the future. I'm glad Nike were fortunate enough to secure him because I honestly don't think Adidas would have been able to achieve what Nike has done with the Jordan brand. Equally surprising after Nike made Jordan an offer, he presented it to Adidas and they didn't go for it, the fact Nike offered him so much money didn't even ring alarm bells lol. Having said that how on earth did Nike lose Stephen Curry, unbelievable arrogance on their part cost them millions. By the way Nike is now also making Hijab outfit for the Muslim market which is estimated to be $243bn. I'm really surprised it's taken this long to be honest. Thanks Tom

Interesting part to this story. Nike Air basketball shoes were around prior to Jordan. In early 1984, I was in Lexington Kentucky to visit the school to check it out. I went with my Dad to shoe store and saw this pair of Nike Air. But they were 90 dollars. I played a ton of basketball at the time and Dad said ok. And bought them for me. 90 dollars was ridiculously expensive. But they were worth every penny. Best shoes ever. Then later that year they came out with Air Jordan’s. Which of course I bought all the time

The success of Air Jordan wasn't exactly planned. Everything just came together in their favour. Nike wasn't MJs first choice and Nike didn't expect the shoe to take off. Heck they wouldn't have given him the points on the sales if they knew. However kudos for turning that opportunity into the world leading brand
