Purchase the Milwaukee 2485 M12 FUEL Cordless Right Angle Die Grinder: bit.ly/2pqKELy
The Milwaukee 2485 M12 FUEL cordless right angle die grinder sinks the knife deep into the wound of the pneumatic tool market. If there's one tool that mechanics use a lot that's still air, it's the right angle die grinder. From removing old gaskets, to removing rust, to prepping metal, the right angle die grinder is many times the perfect tool. The new cordless right angle die grinder from Milwaukee is .3 hp and has 4 power modes selected by the push of a button.
Looking down on the top of the new Milwaukee cordless die grinder you see a button with 1, 2, 3, & 4 surrounding. These are the power modes which equate to 10K, 15K, 20K, and 25K RPM. Depending on the accessory you're using should determine which power setting or RPM that you should use. The paddle switch is much like that of an air die grinder with a rocker safety lever that must be activated before the paddle switch will call on the power.
We tested out the new Milwaukee M12 FUEL cordless right angle die grinder on an LS engine that we tore apart a few days earlier. This is a motor that's over 20 years old and had more than 250K miles on it. The new M12 2485 handled the job with ease, including the cylinder block surface, valley pan surface, oil pan surface, water pumps surface, front cover surface, and the cylinder heads. Handling all this used up two 2.0Ah M12 batteries.
You can purchase the Milwaukee 2485 as a bare tool for $169, or you can buy the kit with 2 batteries, charger, and tools for just $259. Milwaukee includes a 5 year tool warranty and 2 year battery warranty.

In canadian pesos price, its like 229 bare tool or 299 (i think its down like 20 bucks) for the tool 2 2.0s a case those fabric ones and the two small wrenches a charger. I kinda like the smaller batterys for tight spots and the fuel ratchet, but yeah 3.0s i seen them like 100 bucks for a pair which sounds like a deal and a half.

A little more powerful than the pneumatic and stupid big... Seriously this thing huge. If you only work on parts that are removed from the vehicle then i guess its ok but for real world use when you have to work in confined spaces this will never replace a pneumatic

We would tend to agree with you. As we mentioned in the video, it's not the end all be all. However, for the majority, or a lot, of the work, cordless is easier to work with. It also offers more control (features, speeds, etc.) of the tool and accessories.

Just got one of these myself. Definitely handy, but it is bulky and gutless. It is excellent for cleaning, but your not going to be hogging off steel with a 1/2 carbide burr with this and it's much bulkier than your average 90 degree die grinder.
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 5 лет назад
You are correct in most areas. Not the tool of choice for cutting or machining a lot of metal. It's definitely bulkier, but it's not uncomfortable. Albeit, I have pretty large hands. I can understand that someone with smaller hands may not care for it. I wouldn't say it's gutless, I think it's right in line for a typicall 1/4 hp air tool. Surface prep, and grinding/cutting small items/areas, this is a great tool. Again, not the end-all be-all.

I mentioned in earlier comments that we knew the heads were getting surfaced/milled and the block is getting decked. I wouldn't say Do NOT use Roloc, but don't use scotch brite (especially coarse). Roloc Bristle Discs are used for aluminum all the time. Albeit, any surface conditioning on aluminum should always take the utmost care.

Hi Tim, I indeed absolutely love this tool as a DIY'er. Sounds as a huge investment for a man like me, but it's still worth it. (I paid $169 plus tax for a bare tool, I have plenty of batteries and chargers.) I'd never use it with a low-capacity battery though, unless I find myself in a situation where I have no other choice. Normally, I'd use it with a 6ah battery, knowing that it's definitely a very high power consumer, especially when spinning at 25,000 rpm. Therefore, even if it was my first Milwaukee tool purchase, I'd have bought it as a bare tool plus a couple of 6ah batteries with a rapid charger. I use it for many purposes, like widening holes in tiles (e.g., for drain openings), wood, metal, plastic, etc.; smoothing rough edges or deburring in any of those materials; and, of course, removing old paint or corrosion from old surfaces to prepare them for repainting or just make them smooth, especially in hard-to-access spots, where neither angle grinder nor orbital sander can reach. Too bad though that my tire shop won't allow me to use it even though its advantages over its pneumatic counterpart are absolutely indisputable. We keep having our multiple coiled air hoses constantly tangling with each other, we're wasting tremendous amount of time trying to untangle them very often; some inexperienced guys still forcefully pull tangled hoses, they're sometimes getting ruptured as a result, so we're wasting time and money whenever we end up replacing them. I offered them to replace all handheld air tools with their cordless electric counterparts made by Milwaukee, yet the top management won't approve it... Sounds pretty silly but I have no choice but to cope with this stupidity.
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 3 года назад
Those are great uses for this tool, and it's great to see that you love it. We are seeing more and more tire shops switching to cordless power tools, due the expense of large compressors and the air cords being trip-hazards. Maybe your shop will see the benefit soon. Maybe you can even mention the additional safety benefits, and their insurance may even give them a discount for it (less hazard). Thanks for watching.

Josh McSweeney I like to use the bristle discs too but that’s all I use on all gasket surfaces. Even they will remove metal if you aren’t really careful but they don’t clog or cut nearly as bad as the scotchbrite discs. They are expensive but so is getting a block resurfaced.
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 5 лет назад
Josh and Strangefruit are right on the money. The Bristle discs are the way to go for removing residual on critical surfaces, especially aluminum. These heads and block are getting resurfaced, so we weren't worried. We were using a coarse scothbrite disc in the video. It's always smart to keep intake and exhaust passages taped up or stuffed with lint-free and clean rags. Any disc has the potential to fling residual dust or debris.

Unlike an angle air grinder, the motor is in the head, eliminating the need for rt. angle gears and saving power, BUT the down side is a big fat head that is bigger than a 2" roloc, making it impossible to get into corners. A 3" roloc will easily stall the tool and is not recommended by Milwaukee. I would like to see an air tool style small geared front with a bigger motor and 18volt battery or even a corded model. that will have more capacity and replace any rt angle die grinder. There are plenty of long nose straight grinders, both cordless and corded. Maybe they could make one to accept a rt angle drive attachment.
