When going extremely low with a vehicle, adjustable suspension systems get the best results as you can raise them up for drivability. However, there is some debate on what type of system works best. Fans of traditional lowriders know that hydraulics can work effortlessly while truck enthusiasts claim that air ride is where it’s at. To help get a better understanding of each, we pit our personal ’00 Chevy S10 with air bagged suspension against a ’70 Monte Carlo that’s running a fully juiced system.
Our special guest, Saul Vargas has heavy roots on the lowrider scene and explains some of the differences between air versus hydros. This includes installation, cost, weight difference, maintenance and ride quality.

Actually the real reason they started making hydraulic setups was cuz they were tired of getting pulled over by bored cops for their cars being too low.....so hydraulics made it possible for them to raise the car to legal height at the time without being harassed by 5-0

I had a lowrider 1987 Mazda B2000 with 2 pump 10 switch setup riding on reverse 13's. Every setup has a sweet spot where the ride is super smooth. If you ride locked up it will always be more bouncy. For my truck tapping the front and back switches 2 times was the best ride like being on air. Mind you I had 6" cylinders up front and 8" cylinders in the rear. I used brackets to mount them so I did not have to cut out the fenders. All the hoses were ran on the frame.

A few things that weren’t talked about is on a hydraulic setup they also have consumables. The hydraulic lines if it’s not setup with hard lines. Those lines could end up failing. Has happened 2-3 times on my friends car. Also most of the time you have to cut holes in the frame for the shafts. Atleast in old schools. My 63 I would have had to cut a 2” or so hole where the shock bolted to on the frame.

The first bag setup I put together was an adventure. I remember going into Truck Pro buying DOT air fittings and trying to explain to the older guys what I was doing. For what I paid back in 2000 -2002 I could have had a full accuair setup today. This was before everyone sold cheap ebay junk. Used SMC 3/8 with 1/2 DOT line. Manifolds built from 20+lbs of brass fittings.

I prefer Hydraulics over air ride suspension because if the air line blow's, your car will drop heavy and could ruined your car... With the hydraulics lines or pump goes out, your car won't drop at all, it'll just stay in the same position, you just won't be able to use it until you fix or replace your hydraulic system... It's alot safer with Hydraulics than air ride

I've had air suspension on my daily driver for 3 years. I drive it to and from work, road trips, highway. Car meets. It's a sports car (2SS 5th gen Camaro) so I like to do a lot of spirited driving. I have no problem comfortably doing any of the things listed above with air suspension. I won't speak for every brand out there, though. My setup is from airlift performance series.

What about hydros that are made to be slow and ride well? Something with accumulators of some sort and a modern control system for ride height? I know I've seen such a thing before. It has some sort of nitrogen-filled buffer in the line so that it had some give instead of being all liquid.

Yeah they ride beautifully, if you want a sweet ass smooth hydraulic ride & not a suck ass bouncy all over the road at speeds past 55mph lol, accumulators are the only way to go ! Yes No hopping with accumulators but do you want a hopper or a driver that can hit the open road & not just the boulevard.
@NTKUSTOMSDOTCOM
@NTKUSTOMSDOTCOM 2 года назад
Accumulators have a set nitrogen pressure chamber to allow the oil somewhere to go that's what makes it so fast because oil does not compress, so the oil that cant be compressed due to its inherent nature has a place to squeeze into then push back out into the system. Yes bags are nice also they just dont ride good locked up like hydraulics with accumulators do, & Accumulated hydraulics that have the same ride quality at the top of the suspension travel and at the bottom seems to be pretty cool in some applications but I pick airbags everytime.
@NTKUSTOMSDOTCOM
@NTKUSTOMSDOTCOM 2 года назад
@@christopherwilliams7645 air ride #1 choice #2 hydraulics. For a more then a couple reasons 1.because hydraulics can leak just like bags but when they do its oil, 2. When relays stick they spark & can possibly catch fire & fire &oil dont mix well. Just a couple examples, They definitely have their purpose and are definitely a lot of fun but I personally would not run them as a daily. & Last thing, you can't hop airbags if they have quality shocks to give you a nice ride, you have to run shockless 😯😬 which is quite bouncy floaty & causes uneven tire wear.

For the most part, yes it can go back to stock fairly easily. On cars with strut style suspension its as easy as switching out to a stock strut. Cars like the monte carlo in the video its almost as easy but needs to weld in some filler plates up on the front frame so the shocks can bolt into place on the frame.

Citroën dude here. I don't get why accumulators isn't more of a thing with the hydraulic lowriders. I mean, have a look at any old Citroën like the DS. It's of course not built for jumping around. But it has a true hydraulic suspension. There's only rams at each wheel. Ok, well... When we talk about "suspension". Hydraculics are stiff as steel of course. I saw that the car in the video had very small coils. What a Citroën DS has is a sphere or "accumulator" at each wheel. It's filled with nitrogen and is the suspending part of the system. The sphere also has two valves + a bypass on the inlet to work as a damper. -The clever bit with that is that when you load up the car, more hydraulic oil has to enter the sphere, compressing the gas more. And that also forces more fluid to pass the same damper. So voila' progressive dampening and suspension is a fact. Now, I realize that jumping require the car to be stiff and undampened (?). A Citroën is very much the least jumpy car ever made. The DS rides better than any Rolls. But if I were into lowriders, I would put suspension spheres on all corners with cutoff valves. Then you have a lowrider when in that mode. And when just driving, you will have better ride than any luxury car ever made. Actually, Citroën already has all the parts needed. The "Hydractive" cars from the 90's are computer controlled and therefore has electric cut-off valves with regulator spheres on them. -Fun fact: When those valves O-rings goes bad, the system can act up a bit. Usually, it does random jumps now and then when switching modes when there is a lot of difference between the different sides. Thanks for sharing. As a hydraulic nerd, I always wondered how those lowriders worked. I'm impressed that they are powerful enough to jump with only pump pressure. Must be a beast of a pump. I mean, a Citroën uses an engine driven pump with a 400cc accumulator and it still wants some seconds to adjust height. The most hydraulic Citroën is the 1995-1999 Xantia Activa. It's like a VW Golf, but rides like an S-class and beats todays supercars in the corners. That one, you can have a lot of fun when tinkering. It has realtime hydraulic swaybars and can wave like a fighter plane if you want it to.

I dont know what air suspension he's running but he lost me when he said A&H are the same weight. I cant speak for every brand of air suspension but airlift makes kits with performance and handling in mind. Airlift suspension components are as follows: 1. the performance series struts with adjustable camber and damping with the bellows, which weigh less than my stock struts and springs. 2. The Airlift Manifold(brain) is maybe 10 lbs. 3. Viair Compressor(s) you can go with one compressor. Two of them still weigh less than one battery 4. Air tank and hose lines, which together weigh next to nothing. 5. Hand-held 3P controller, which is smaller and lighter than any cell phone. The whole air suspension itself weighs waaaay less than 6-8 car batteries alone and thats not factoring in the weight of the hydraulic system. Air suspension is also relatively small. I have airlift 3H suspension in a 5th gen 2SS Camaro and I still have plenty of room in my trunk to install amps and subs if i wanted. Obviously, hydros are better suited for big body cars and trucks because I can't imagine having to drive around hauling 6-8 car batteries in the trunk of a sports car. I'd be terrified to drive on the highway. The only power needed for air suspension is a 12 volt connection to one stock battery. My old sound system needed more power.

In a 63 this would work but you’d need a stronger carrier bearing and a slip yoke for less hassle also if you keep 8” cylinders in back you won’t have as many issues with the panhard bar (the rear axles kicking out to the left under car thr higher you lock up let’s say with 10” cylinders or bigger) and I had shocks still in back and liked to bounce but you could also add ACCUMULATORS and that would dampen the ride A LOT. On my batteries I had all 5 to front with 4 solenoids and 4 batterie’s to the back with 3 solenoids for a quick switch response (well with steel gears just dnt over lock your system on those gears so you dnt snap the gear and it’ll last you 20 yrs no bullshit with the occasional motor swap when it wears out) the 66 caprice I’m building now is gonna have a bladder with #11 and an Adel to the front with back pump having two delta’s and two accumulators 8 batteries across the back 4 tons upfront and 12” cylinders and 3 tons in back., this should skate as I race down the highway pretty decently 😆 I like it but it’s gonna need more maintenance regularly and it’s not for the tame I’d say..,this will be a daily driver like all my cars. If the compressors draw too much power the fuse will pop and shut the system off before any risk of an electrical surge or fire and you replace the fuse. Wrong. Airlift 3P and 3H have the ability to set 4 presets and 1 manual air up the center controller. It also has 4 buttons on the left and right to adjust each corner individually. You can do this while driving or stationary. I have a low preset for roads I know or to stunt. A ride height for daily driving to and from work. A high preset for steep driveways, a slammed preset and a manual adjust if I'm washing my car and want it super high to clean the side skirts and wheel wells without straining my back. Just press the button each preset is assigned to. Then there's the rise on start feature. It's optional and works as a safety feature in case you forget to raise your vehicle before driving. Also, you can wirelessly control the system with an app on your cellphone if you want to control your vehicle from afar at carshows. I can sit or stand over 30 feet away from my car and adjust the height.

@retroman9287 good question. I can't imagine what it would be. Air suspension is 10 times lighter. Only needs a 12 volt connection to one battery instead of 6-8 batteries. If there happens to be a leak it's just Air and not fluid bleeding everywhere. Has free infinite fuel source ( air ) vs purchasing more fluid. Doesn't require cutting into and/or reinforcing your vehicle frame. It is small enough to fit into a Mazda miata and drive safely on the highway. Uses Bluetooth apps to control via cell phones or tablets and can use handheld digital remote to store presets and monitor air pressure height. The only thing that I find impressive with hydros is their immediacy in action. They raise and lower much quicker than air suspension. Hydros are like a spry teenager in movement while air suspension is like an elderly man slowly lowering himself into a rocking chair.

You didn't just bring a lowrider, that's an iconic car in the scene, a beutifully done Monte. This said, you can use that beutiful old school aircraft set up but hide a set of accumulators, with shut off valves if you hop it, so that the ride will be as comfortable as a stock car, and definitely just as much as air bags, if not even more, I'm not kidding nor exaggerating, I understand old school guys are a bit suspicious about it, and are used to their cars being on the uncomfortable side of things, but hydraulics historically got a bad rep because of this, but with today's experience and technology there is no reason for your car's suspension being as stiff as a skateboard 😅, particularly if it's a cruiser being driven consistently, diffrent story if it's a hopper. Other that accumulators there are diffrent ways of making it comfy, shocks for instance, it might sound like a given, but for decades Lowriders seldom used them, and they make A TON of difference, as they remove all the "bouncyness" from it, same thing with airbags, to me shocks are a must, and if you couple them with accumulators you're ride is in stock car territory . There's also another trick, we call it fluid displacement in the UK, which consists in having a full set of coils mounted on a remote frame, each connected to a corner, it's basically a remote suspension set up that gives you full coil lenght on each corner while still allowing you to lay frame, since they are mounted in the trunk, or wherever you wish. Then there's a new company, can't remember their name, that offers cilinders that have shocks incorporated in a single unit, so hydraulic ram and shock all in one, they offer it with an electronic control unit that is infinitely tunable, with height sensors and all. It's just as expensive as you'd imagine though, but it's also next level for a show car or truck. I think Finnegan here on YT had them installed on his C10, or was it Roadkill? Anyhow, you can check it out there if you wish. So these are the most common ways to get the most out of hydraulics, but it's one of those things where your imagination is the limit, for me there is nothing cooler than the sound of the pump's electric motors spinning when hitting the switches to rise your car, or to look at how the set up was plumbed and what kind of dump was used, I love the Adex obviously, besides looking badass there is nothing better as far as quality, particularly for competition, and Andy Lodi has decades of experience and is a real stand up guy always ready to help, I remember when I was "a kid" he always replied politely to my stupid newby questions, he's a legend in the game but very relatable guy, and his product is absolute top quality which you fully pay without a moment of hesitation. There are quite a few other cool dumps from the aircraft surplus world, Whittakers are my favorites, Ruano's hydraulics being the specialists here, restoring them in his garage and offering an amazing product, you should definitely look him up on Insta, he's another great guy , the lowrider community can most certainly pride itself of being the most no nonsense, no ego BS, super talented and humble people group of guys.

I don’t think your review was all the way true hydraulics ride like shit you need to reinforce your car or you’re gonna break it once you have a leak fluid goes everywhere .. with air suspension your ride way better if you have a leak it’s nothing but air not fluid. You don’t have to cut your car up like you do to put hydraulics in it.

@@babynieve9612depends on the brand. There are numerous kinds on the market outisde the US and within. The most popular ones are Airlift and Accuair. They have kits designed specifically for different vehicle years, makes and models. Depending on your car and which kit you go with it can run from $3000.00 to $5500.00 brand new. The price can climb considerably if you want to get visually fancy components for nice trunk setups.
