Air / Steam Whistle

Thanks to Mr. Ken Bohn for his video on making a steam whistle from scrap parts • Video From that video and its comments I was able to glean enough information to build a few myself. The one shown in the thumbnail was actually made from the extra parts I machined while making this video. It is the loudest so far at an estimated 150-155 decibel.

Absolutley brilliant tutorial. Ive been trying to find all the salient points of importance when building a whistle and youve nailed it. Best regards Stuart from UK

I am also not a musician but I worked on a project to refurbish and old pipe organ and it's installation in our church. If you are still interested in air-powered notes, you may wish to research how organ pipes are made. They run on much lower air pressure but higher volume of air passing thru the pipes (our organ utilizes "4 inches of water" as its static pressure). Also there are videos of how to make train whistles out of pvc pipe. From these you could learn what notes each whistle should be tuned to to make your combined air horn sound like one of the big diesel locomotives. Loved this project. 😎👍

I just finished making a 9" one as per your instructions and it works great! It is LOUD!! One thing I would change is to make the diameter of at least the bell 1/4-3/8 wider diameter so that the bottom plate screws have a bit more room for their threads & heads. I wound up using M4 screws,

Fascinating project Lee - not something we'd come across very often! Quite a lot of machining involved. Great result - just imagine 200 psi of steam :)

Great project Sir! Thank you for taking the time to detail the steps out. I have been looking into trying to make a set for a while now. I think now after watching, I can give it a try.

That is really something. All of your projects are very interesting and this one is no different. Maybe Keith Rucker can hook that up to his locomotive and see just how loud it can get. I think you guys are not too far from each other.

not sure if anyone cares but if you are stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all of the new movies and series on Instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my girlfriend for the last couple of months :)

Something doesn't have to be useful to be fun... ;) Now time for a bigger compressor and a professional air delivery system... lol

I want to make a 3" one to hook to the bleed valve on the bottom of my compressor. Neighbors will love that.

the reason that they are all the same note C sharp is that the length of each one is doubled in length causing the note to drop one octave. To raise a note one octave you need to double is frequency. If you want to made a 3 note cord you need to look up the ratio of the third and fifth note of a music scale. to set their lengths.

Were you ever able to run more volume of air through them? Half inch pipe should do it.

Would be interesting to hook up selanoid values to rotate between each to have a fluctuating sound .

Larger supply line right up to the manifold, if that's still not enough air volume, tee it and run a line to each end of the manifold... it would be interesting to hear those using steam if it doesn't require re-tuning.

It appears that the only component providing stability to the resonator is its tight fit to the cap. Is there any reason not to provide a mechanical connection between the resonator and the cap; e.g. pin or cap screws?

If the "bell" (cup) is drilled for 3/8x24 and the botton piece is drilled and taped for 1/4" NPT how does the set up on the lathe to turn the bottom round allow for the 3/8x24 threaded rod to extend through the 1/4 NPT bottom.
