Here's a bite-sized little morsel to chomp on over the weekend.. On January 21, 2020, I spent a few hours snooping around Allentown, PA.. Being smack dab on Norfolk Southern's NYC-to-Chicago route, of course there's going to be action.. But things seemed quieter that usual.. Several train symbols that used to originate and/or terminate in town have been re-routed to other terminals or abolished outright which is why the Allentown Yard, although still active seemed somewhat empty.. We're living in a new era of railroading and its future is anything but certain.
Here's a video that goes into detail about the railroad workings of Allentown, Pennsylvania.. Keeping in mind that this video was made before the TOP21 PSR of 2019:

Trains 21 is a documentary of railroading in the 21st century and a look at the fascinating world of transportation. On this channel we deal with all aspects of trains with a strong focus on the Northeast USA.
This goal is for you to learn a lot in a short amount of time.. A major infusion of knowledge in just a few minutes.. And if those few minutes distilled some of the best railroad information in the industry, we feel that we've done our job..
The trick is clarity.. Clear, concise and on point.. New videos are uploaded frequently and if you like what you see, comment, like and subscribe (in that order!).

I thought my internet froze at 0:18 lol. I like that shot of 24Q going over the bridge with the steel stacks and H44 crossing over at BURN. Rumors are going around that they will rip up the hump outright.

Haha, I tend to have a penchant for those freeze-frames.. Sorry if I spooked ya.. I hope the rumors are false but the way NS is going, I fear for the worse.. Thanks for watching CP.

As a local to the Allentown area, I hope they don't close the yard! The yards around Bethlehem aren't easy to railfan so the Allentown yard is basically all there is.

Very nice footage! 3381and her sister unit 3380 (which I have seen) both have RS3Ls that are mounted backwards giving them a unique sound. Love the sound of the EMD prime mover as well. Love the video.

back in summer 1979, we stopped in at allentown/bethlehem/reading. reading was dead except for a few former rdg cabooses, and a single freshly FP7 painted in SEPTA paint. bethlehem was active with red ex lv SW8s crawling around. the round house was up and inside was a former lv RS11 that the employees were literally hiding, trying to keep it as long as possible. I have seen satellite images of bethlehem and it is RR non-existent . I do not remember much about allentown, maybe we ran out of sunlight?

Another fine video AC!! For your viewers there is an article in the 1st Quarter 2020 T.R.P. Magazine by Mike Bednar who is reporting the Allentown Hump was closed in July 2019. Sad new for us railfans. Big Mike's story laments the whole P.S.R. phenomenon, the closing of the yard and has some really nice historical background and photos. I'm hoping this P.S.R. craze will not hamper your efforts in bringing us some of the absolute best RR videos available anywhere. That alone would be reason not to like it!
@EmpireBeltRR
@EmpireBeltRR 4 года назад
I mistakenly typed "closing of the yard' in line 3 instead of closing of the "hump". Allentown will be a flat switching yard according to the article and looks to getting downgraded. Ugh...

It's crazy how much freight just stops in Allentown. Bethlehem gets much less action than the trackage west of the yard.

Hi from England, I have just started watching these videos. I first got interested after seeing a video of the Big boy, this train is awesome. I come from a railway family, my father and grandfather worked on the railways in England as they were born in the town where the first passenger railway ran from . There was a locomotive shop that built trains for British railways until 1963. As I was brought up in a railway environment, I became a boilermaker, hence my interest in Big boy. A question I would like to ask is, how come in America you have a train husked by locomotive s from a different company ? BTW, I love the videos of the trains I. America old and new, in fact I am hooked on them.
@Trains21
@Trains21 4 года назад
Thanks Tony, the best answer I can give you is that railroads are private companies in America.

@@tonyhull4978 It's called "re-paying horsepower hours." It happens when one railroad owes another railroad locomotive usage time.. It's calculated many different ways depending on the railroads involved.. Too much to explain in a single comment.

I see them in the morning in their yard getting ready for the day and then on occasion I’ll see them crossing 3rd st. Some cool areas around Allentown that was once used by the Lehigh valley, CNJ, Reading, Conrail.
