I just got an airbrush kit as a present from my lovely friends so I bought an airbrush spray booth from 'Dawoo' aka 'Master'. In this video, I'm going to test and review it to see if it will actually keep me and my family safe from overspray and the paint particles that float in the air when airbrushing.
I am testing it by burning some incense and seeing how well the spray booth will suck in the incense smoke as I move the incense in and out of the booth. I am also testing to see how well the filter blocks out the smoke from coming out of the exhaust of the airbrush spray booth.
I also check out the lights that are built into the booth and see how well they light up the miniatures for airbrushing and if the version with the lights is worth getting.

I just had this delivered today - Ordered it as it folds up nice and compact for storage. RU-vid is now recommending I watch some reviews - so I was glad that it will be good enough for the limited painting I will be doing with water based acrylics.

Please,everyone,remember the filter supplied with these booths is a light particulate filter only.It will not remove gases or solvents only solid particles.Use the hose to get all the nasties out a window,or if you don't have a hose make one,standard extractor parts available at DIY shops.It is remarkable how much dust even acrylic paint throws up when spraying.

Yeah I also always wear a mask and only use acrylic paints with it. Don't trust it with anything that releases gases

@@DieTabbi You could try a charcoal filter if you can find one to fit onto your hose,but these small booths might not have the power to force the air through it and it would just blow back at you.The best way to get rid of gases is out a window,you can get extension fittings from your local builders or tool merchants(Toolstation or Screwfix in the UK)Hope this helps.

Great test, I've never taken the plunge to an air brush (apart from one I had at 15 but that's too long ago to count) and this removes one of the major barriers I had to one 👍

The filter does not filter all particle sizes, but only the coarse color particles. The vapors can pass through the filter almost unfiltered. Therefore, it is important that the air is discharged directly outside or that the room is well ventilated. For the filtration of particularly small particles (gases), multi-stage filters are required, which are very expensive and large.

Yeah I wouldn't trust this with vapours at all. I wear a mask when using my booth and ideally I would use the extractor hose as well

But if you are spraying acrylic paint and venting outside then you should be fine if you have a filtered mask.

Hey there Dave ! Great video ! I just had one question : would this be fitting for use with paint in can format (aerosol, spray paint) ? It seems like the flow is usually heavier with these compared to airbrushes and I'm worried this could become an issue for this spray booth line of products !

Hey mate, cheers for watching. With the airbrush it is only paint + air, and the paint very quickly dries in the air to form a fine dust/powder which the booth sucks in through the filter (I think the filter is only designed to filter particles). I don't think this would be safe for use with spray cans, as they contain a vapour/gas which is not good for us to breath in. Since it is a gas, I think it will get everywhere in your room. I have always used spray cans outside because of this, I think to use spray cans inside safely you have to use an industrial spray booth + a very highly rated mask/respirator. What I currently do is I wear a mask still while airbrushing with this booth because I'm still worried about the paint particles that could get out, if you're interested in airbrushing there are some very cheap kits to get started with on amazon which will do the basics.

@@DavesMiniMenagerie Thank you very much for this detailed answer. I think you're right, it would be unnecessary exposure to dangerous stuff. And health matters more than the arts. I'll take a look at airbrushing, although for my use case I'm not really sure what to go for. Planning on painting 3D printed parts that are meant to be used and touched daily for extended periods of time (computer mouse). I found combinations of primers, spray paints and coating to be optimal for this scenario, but I would be forced to do my painting outside. Would airbrushes be fitting? Also, I'm subscribing to your channel, this attention to comments as rarely seen on RU-vid, if ever. And I love it! :D

@@jojothepro15 Cheers, for something like a mouse which will be touched a lot then you will need a varnish. You can get varnish in a bottle which can be brushed on, or in a spray can, or you can varnish with an airbrush. Checkout out Goobertown Hobbies video on varnishing, he tested how well they work against greasy fingers. Painting 3D printed parts shouldn't be an issue at all with acrylic paints applied with a brush or airbrush, tons of people do it without issue as long as the part is cleaned and primed first. An airbrush or spray can will almost always result in a smoother finish as there are no brush strokes. The longevity will all be down to varnishing and how it is used I think.

For spraying anything with a high VOC (solvents, propellants etc) you're probably going to need a semi-pro booth/extractor that also vents to air. I have two like Dave's and they're only used in the house for water based acrylics. Hope that helps👍😊

thank you alot for this video. I noticed you don't have the tube from the exhaust to your window. Is the paint booth safe to operate like that? I have no window near my desk so if the filter is enough that would help me alot.

I'm not really sure if it is safe safe. I don't use the hose cause I don't have a window close to my desk either. I always wear a mask as well when I'm airbrushing

I think the tube is a 4 inch tube, not certain. I think you would have to get something that adapts from a 4 inch tube to a filter. I don't have a window in my room either but I am happy with the inbuilt filter in the spray booth and just let it exhaust into my room

my spray booth is just like that and it came with a back hose should I be installing the hose on when Im spraying or will the filter catch all the paint fumes?

Hey mate, if you can fit the hose and poke it out a window then that will be better than not using the hose. I can't say that the filter will catch everything so if you can use the hose to get anything that makes it through the filter, out your window then that's best. My hobby desk is too far away from a window so I can't use my hose on mine. Thanks for watching!

I had one of these for the longest time. Something Id recommended is once every 6 months to use something strong to clean the panel joints as mine got clogged and cracked or broke

@@cheyenneallen4901 really depends on what paints you're using. I use acrylics which don't have a vapour to worry about, spray cans or enamel paints have a vapour which is dangerous inside. I use the booth inside and I don't have a window for it, I wear a painting mask and make sure my mini is well within the booth and it is fine for me. No paint going anywhere, and it hasn't bothered my GF

@@cheyenneallen4901 just keep your airbrush and the model inside the walls of the booth and it will suck all the paint particles into the filter. If I miss the model then I just get a bit of paint on the side or bottom of the booth which is ok. Then just gotta be careful you don't drop the airbrush haha

Great video - brilliant idea using incense smoke. Can I ask - how noisy is your booth? Have you had any issues with odour/fume in your apartment as your booth doesn't vent to air? I've one - that looks very similar but with less lights - that vents straight from the back and one with a hose (vents to outside air). I've not noticed any issues in the past - but I only use water based acrylics. I'm thinking of upgrading though as I may need to spray some products that contain VOCs. And these days my sense of smell is shot (for obvious reasons 🙄🙄😷🙄😉). Thanks👍😊.

Hey mate cheers. Mine is pretty loud, would be annoying to talk over it, I just have headphones that I listen while I use it. I'm not sure how well it would work with the more dangerous stuff, I only use it for acrylics as well. I've noticed that sometimes the paint gets out through the cracks in the side and stuff like that, not sure about smell as my acrylics don't smell. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

@@DavesMiniMenagerie Hi, thanks good advice and comments 👍😊 I don't think that the type of booths that you and I have are best suited to VOC type solvents🤔🤔😕 Ideal for acrylics though - I'd never cover the filters (for all the obvious reasons) but the sides, on their outsides, could have paper towel taped - temporarily - over the gaps, so as to stop leakage of paint particles/overspray? 🤔🤔 Always a tricky balance if there's no designated modelling space Eg a shed etc🙄🙄☹️🙄😊

We do have a garage but it's either roasting hot or freezing cold, plus ventilation is zero without the main door open (not practical). Before the pandemic I spent 18months learning how to use acrylics - after years of using enamels (I can only, these days, just about, tolerate odourless thinners - even then it's limited use and swmbo isn't keen on the smell of enamel paints, which is understandable). So I've had to adapt🤔🙄🤔😊😄

I don't know, I've never used a photography box before. I find I like my results just positioning my light above and to the side of my mini, and then sitting him on a smooth curves background. Squidmar has a good video about taking good videos for cheap. This lights in this spray booth sort of light everything which is good for painting but might not look the best for photos

Cheers mate, honestly I don't know. Mine is discoloured at the bottom because I've hit it directly with paint, I think if you didn't do that it would last a long time. The filter itself is about 2cm thick which seems good, and there are cheap replacements on ebay

Great video! I just bought it and I think it’s a bit noisy, but it is good it works. Then spraying do you use the tube that comes with the booth? It’s taking up a lot of space, I think 🙈

Thanks mate, I don't use the tube because my painting desk is a long way from the window so it won't reach. And yeah with the tube on the airbrush booth is very deep

Hi Dave, Hope you don’t mind a comment re the exhaust hose that normally connects to the back. I have a similar setup and have watched several videos on these units. On one of these videos the owner could not use the exhaust tube to a window, so what they did and showed was to run the hose to a bucket of water. The important part was to have an inch / 25mm gap between the hose end and the water. Apparently the waste will settle safely on the water and not in the air. The hose end must not go into the water as there would be too much back pressure for exhaust to move freely. Hope this helps. Cheers mate.

If you can leave it set if I'd recommend using something like painters masking tape to seal up all the other in-bleed joints. Took me 5 minutes and it significantly increased to air flow rate at the face for obvious reasons. I also cut some perspex to make a small flip down "Visor" to reduce the front cross section when possible to also increase the air flow over the face even more. So yeah it doesn't matter what the flow is at the back just the front face that's important. Ohh and don't be tempted not to vent it out of a window. Mine looks the same and it's really noisy so I'll probably open it up and replace the fan with something quieter and probably get a higher flow rate to boot... something like a Noctua fan will give better performance on all fronts.

Yeah 100%, I have to out mine away when not in use so I can't tape the joints. I've noticed that some of the paint gets through those joints and onto the table. I cant reach out the window with my hose so I always also wear a mask

I use mine in my lounge, I always wear my mask when I use it and pack it up when I'm done. I am a little careful to make sure I'm not absolutely blasting paint out because the booth can't suck in a huge cloud of paint

Did I see that your booth has a US plug? Do you simply use an adapter plug? Does the fan running on 240v run double time if it’s designed for 110v use? Sorry….so many questions!

@Sam Hoban Thanks for watching Sam, mine actually came with a UK plug for power (I'm in the UK). It has a UK AC to DC power supply which takes in 100-240V (50/60Hz) 1Amp max, and Outputs: 12V, 2.5A (30W) to the Spray Booth. Hopefully, if you are in the US the version they sell there will come with the US power plug and US AC-DC converters. Since the Spray Booth is DC powered it should work the same between 110v and 240v as long as the power supply outputs at least 12v, 2.5 Amps DC

@Sam Hoban Cheers mate, I'm from Brisbane actually, only been in London a year. It's a side effect of working with electronics as a day job haha. I forgot to mention that the DC plug on the Spray Booth is a normal 2.1/2.5mm x 5.5mm DC Barrel Jack (Ground on Sleeve, 12V on the Pin) so you might have one of those sitting around already. I also just saw the fan is labelled as 12v, 1.5A so the LEDs must be 12v 1A. Hopefully you can find one with an Aus Power Supply! (Aus plug is best plug)

It comes with a tube which can be attached to the exhaust on the back, I think it is 2 or 3 metres long. I don't use it because I don't have a window near my desk but if I did I would. However I am pretty happy with how well the filter in the booth works so I'm not worried about not having the tube on

I would if I could but my desk is no where near my window when I paint. With the just the filter it seems to do a good job but if your painting desk is near a window then the tube out would be good

It is reasonably loud, I don't have a great way to measure it. I would estimate it to be as loud as your kitchen exhaust fan on high. Or like a loud bathroom exhaust fan. It is definitely louder than my airbrush compressor but it is a steady sound, I hope that helps mate

Yeah, I made this vid because I wasn't sure how good it's suction was going to be. I'm pretty happy with how well it works. If you have a window near you're painting desk then I'd definitely attach the hose and stick it out the window
