How cool was to have a US Army King Air overhead to look out for your crash landing and provide lat/long. Kudos to everyone and speedy recovery to both occupants! Thanks to Connick for sharing his footage and thanks to a nice ZOA controller for helping me develop and create this radar animation!

Fantastic! Glad they survived - that was some excellent flying. Does that aircraft have retractable landing gear? it didn't look like he had it down, which likely kept it from cartwheeling. (Hard to tell if it did flip.) What awesome work by everyone involved! Thanks Connick and Victor for putting this together. When did this happen?

This was such a crazy and unexpected thing to see in person. Credit actually goes to my wife, who was just filming scenes of the lake with her drone and caught the accident by chance. I was watching the plane with binoculars and didn’t realize it was having issues until it kept descending and finally hit the water. Many thanks to VASAviation for the quality video, and as many commenters already stated, the situation was handled very well by the controller, nearby aircraft and of course the boats who came to assist!

When I flew over Puget Sound, it was always "life vests on" (airline type inflatable) until over land or landed. That water is COLD and survival time is very limited until you cramp up and drown. A life jacket will give you an hour+ before going fully hypothermic. These people were very lucky to have so many rescue boats on scene so fast.

Not sure what distances you were covering by in my GA time we had them but didn't wear them. Too hot so we'd climb higher to where you can glide to the closest coast and drop the temp. I have heard some not so good controllers, but this guy was not one; He instructed best glide and coordinated communication. I was surprised by the actual footage, and the 'landing' also shocked me that they seemed in a perfect profile for a Sully greaser, but just dead stopped when they contacted the water and flipped. Gear was up so that was not a factor, but I cannot understand why they were not able to skim/skip considering the flatness of the contact angle. Nice work Connick and crew for relaying, capturing and sharing, and VAS, also.

@RowanHawkins
@RowanHawkins Год назад
there is a lot of drag and a lot of momentum. So the bottom front/mid of the craft touches first, stops and the upper plane structure pivots on the new CG. If the pilot comitted to the ditch earlier they might have had energy for a flared landing which is what Sully did by sticking the aft fuselage in the water first. killing and feathering the prop may have helped reduce drag too since a spinning prop not making power creates a drag disc. But its a lot to think about. I'm glad that ATC is now telling pilots they are emergency aircraft to get the pilot into the correct mindset, though I don't know why the pilot was making for an airport they couldn't reach instead of staying closer to shore.
@elizabeth5985

Looks like they're going to have to do more practice ditching in a large body of water 🙄 Note that Lake Tahoe is very deep and wide and is probably more similar to landing on the ocean than in the Hudson (1600 feet deep vs. 50 feet deep)

Oho. INTEL12 has Airborne Intercept radar. I wonder what their usual mission is. The registration says Aerial Surveying, but that doesn't usually involve a radar that can track other aircraft, that kind of implies something fairly sophisticated. One of the things they do is survey wildfires, but they don't need Airborne Intercept RADAR for that.

Tahoe only has a couple sandy beaches across the entire rim of the lake. The rest of the rim is almost entirely boulders. With so much ugliness in the world, it's nice to be reminded that most people are good. Seeing those watercraft race to save the occupants of the plane brought a tear to my eye.

I guess in the case of a water landing any landing you can swim away from.

Did he just run out of lift and basically bombed down the last bit?

The Bonanza is a slippery plane and has a higher stall speed and landing speed then many other small GA aircraft. It appears the pilot flew it all the way to the scene of the crash.

Water is tricky to land on if you haven’t trained on seaplanes. Difficult to gauge your height above the water. He probably had enough airspeed to pull up and float out a lot of speed just before kissing the surface. But trying to nail that you’re first time with your life on the line…? Not easy in the least. Also would have liked to see glide her a little closer to shore but he was reasonably close to some boats so that’s also good. If that’s what he was aiming for.
