Finally I get some time off work and build the Airfix Spitfire kit. It goes together very well and I don't have the issues others complain about on RU-vid. Why is that? You will have to watch my video to see how I approach the kit and show my simple solutions for some the most common complaints.

Thank the gods Harry. I watched a gentleman build this model and he ranted about how shite it was, fitting was dismal. I thought I’d bought a bag of beans from Jack. So I started to build this as the instructions state. Not a problem. Event the tank cover on the nose fitted because I glued it in four steps. If people want to build models without any hassle buy some bloody Lego. He really got my goat. He didn’t even try to overcome the issue, just slap some filler in and than more. I thought modelling was a fun hobby we’re you tried your best. Not cry like a child on the teat. Any how, cheers. Take care and sod the lot of em.

Dear Harry, thank you for pointing out to all those who expect a model to be perfect that this is what modelling is all about. All those who try and then give up are in the wrong game. As you so rightly point out "where there is a will there is a way". Great show, keep it up, regards, Mr"T"

One thing I do remember from Airfix kits as a kid in the 1970s is that there were never big gaps to fill (not that I knew there was stuff you could fill with back then). What I do remember was warm glue oozing out of the tube and going everywhere (especially on there 1.76 scale tanks) creating a mess on the kit and my fingers.
@HarryHoudiniModels

Airfix has gone through a number of owners and processing methods over the last half century. the late 70’s to 90’s were not always their best years, with many Heller reboxings and poor mouldings.

I first saw this c Video when you released it. I was intrigued! Just today I watched Champion Scale Modelling's review of this kit, and he absolutely rubbished it. Savage. I noted you commented on that video ;-) And yet, your simple fix of the most common complaint - panel fit forward of the cockpit, and wings to fuselage fit - is bog easy. Geez. U reckon there is some degree of brand snobbery here. The scale Modelling version of Ford vs Holden. Well done, Harry!

Great video Harry! I have found that most of these new tool Airfix kits go together very well when you do two things: 1. Clean up the parts properly removing mould seams etc. And 2. (And this is the most radical for modellers) FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! Particularly the order of construction given. I've fallen for the trap that catches most modellers thinking they know better in three of the Airfix kits I've built recently, and given myself more work than necessary fixing self inflicted problems.

Cracking vid, Harry! Slayed the myths, proved the points and sold me on the kit....job done, mate! The recent Airfix 1/72 offerings are very good indeed.....the Me109 needed “thinning” in the cockpit area, just to maintain the dihedral on fitting it together. The P40B has three issues, the wingroot gaps, the radiator cowlings gap and the top nose cowling fit....all of which can be overcome with a bit of work.....one other issue, when you join the fuselage together, you end up with seam gap behind the Pilots seat.....👍🏻 All that said though.....you get sooooo much kit for not much money (£7 - £9 UK) and you can’t complain about that....unless you like to complain about kit fit issues....possibly 🤪😂😂 Keep em coming mate....I’m subscribing btw.....🤪

Hi Harry, I love the channel. I'm currently building this kit, and really enjoying it. Like you, I prefer modelling to assembling. A few minutes spent checking, dry-fitting etc is all part of my enjoyment. I also like the warm feeling I get from building Airfix...partly because of the box art and the nostalgia, but also because they're a joy to build. A few things I noticed: Have you noticed the fiddly elevator part is tapered (I think). Putting the narrow end at the top to follow the rudder profile makes it pop in a treat. I've used your cocktail stick-trick before (but with sprue). In this instance I glued a couple of plasticard tabs inside the fuselage so they formed a small rebate (in carpentry terms). When the fuel tank cover is put in place, these tabs held it apart perfectly. (if that explanation makes sense?) Step 1 shows D14 (trim wheel?) being fitted. Step 9 shows it in a different location. Oh, and after painting the rear cockpit tub aluminium as suggested, it then gets totally hidden in the fuselage. Grrr! Apart from that, really good instructions. Bit of a waffle there, you must be having an effect on me! Mat, from the UK 🇬🇧 🇦🇺 🙂
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 3 года назад
Hi Douglas. Yes I worked out the taper on that elevator locking part. It’s just my fat wobbly fingers that could not man handle it into the tiny space, and using tweezers ran the risk of a “ping” to the hungry carpet monster. But I got there in the end.

Thanks for this video, Harry. There are quite a few by other notable reviewers decrying the quality - particularly the fit of bits - of this kit. You make them look rather silly. I'm not an Airfix fanboi by any stretch of the imagination (I've less of their kits that Tamiya, Eduard), but WILL show some loyalty to a 'brand' (which has changed ownership, manufacturing) which first got me building kits half a century ago. The world would be a sadder place without them, giving many of us a start in the game. Good on you, Harry.

Spot on mate, too many perfectionist who want a model thats easy to put together moan,moan, moan, bloody terrible model I had to make it fit, back in the day all models were like that, huge gaps glue that took hours to dry ,no such thing as extra thin quick drying we had models covered in flash badly moulded and paints that never seemed to dry, but that’s what model making is all about, as long as you end up with something that you made, looks like a duck and walks like a duck well happy days I say. Sadly those were some dark years for Airfix with bad investors and poor quality control out of France. But as you say, even a difficult kit can be brought to life with some care and attention. I did that with a Smer Macchi racing seaplane. Awful kit. But in the end my result was good enough to enter in competition and I won 1st place.

I am a fan of Airfix`s latest 1/48 subjects (Ju 87, BP Defiant, Hurricane, P 40. Tiger Moth), but this kit was definitely a step backwards in my opinion. I had problems with the wing roots and fuel tank in front of cockpit. Having said that, it does build in to a lovely Spit and the decals are among the best I have used, including after market. I usually spray the markings on but these went on flawlessly.
@HarryHoudiniModels

..and yet I clearly show, if you watch my whole video, the wing roots and tank cover do fit, if you build it properly.
