Airfix was nice enough to send me a pre-release kit of the Spitfire FR Mk.XIV but I did not recieve payment, nor was instructed on what to say. All views and references are my own.

Time lapse video of the full build, painting and weathering of the Airfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit as shown by The Inner Nerd
The first part of this video shows the use of Photo Etched parts and scratch building techniques on the Airfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit to detail hydraulic pipes and electrical cables professionally and cheaply around both the cockpit and wheel bays. Locitite 406 CA superglue is used in this process combined with CA superglue accelerator/activator to join the two dissimilar materials. Also used are details from Eduard Brassin which are additional parts to the Airfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit scales box
The second part shows the Airfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty modelling filler/putty and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts using a range of sand papers from 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000p dpi grit papers. Also Black Basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1000, 1200 & 1500 Finishing Surfacer" thinned with Mr Hobby Self Levelling Thinner 400 to prime the surface ready for painting, sprayed through an airbrush using Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar).
The third part of the video demonstrates theAirfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit using the BLACK-BASING technique to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar). Also included in this section on the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale model is the Engine Exhaust painting using Alclad 2 Lacquers (Airframe Aluminium, Aluminium, Steel, Jet Exhaust, Copper & Pale Burnt Metal) and Tamiya clear paints to create a burnt metal effect. 3 layers of Mr Color GX100 Superclear III thinned with Mr Hobby Self Levelling Thinner 400 seal the decals in. This can be decanted and sprayed through an airbrush such as the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo.
Decals for the Airfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit follow painting with the aid of Mr Hobby Mr Mark Setter & Softer products. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes of the Airfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit panel lines and surface which you can see in the video.
Next is the weathering of the Airfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit. This is started using Abteilung 502 & Winsor & Newton oil paints thinned with white spirit to a wash consistency. Then used as a panel line wash the oil is applied across the Airfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including Unthinned Abteilung 502 Oil Paints to create streaking and water marks, along with AK Interactive weathering Pigments (Gun Metal, Russian Earth, Europe Earth, Medium Rust and Pigment Fixer, Worn Effects, Dark Streaking Grime Rainmark Effects) concludes weathering.

You've done a great job as usual, and I agree with your comments at the end. I can't believe how crude that kit is in places. Airfix have produced some nice kits, of course, but increasingly I'm getting fed up with the detail softness, fit issues and quality control problems. I tend to avoid them these days unless the subject matter is particularly appealing. It's not as if they're cheap anymore either...

Thank you and yes you're right about avoiding them, I do the same unless it's something particularly interesting of the box art is so good I can't resist. My favourite Airfix kit is their He111 but not many others match that level of fit unfortunately. Thanks for watching :)

Excellent build. Well done. Just a point though about the lack of headrest in the cockpit. Apparently, the Spitfire Mk XIV did not have headrests above the seats. It appears that only Merlin Spitfires had them. So the lack of one is actually accurate. The photos that I looked at though we're of preserved Spitfire XIV, it's possible they may have been left out during restoration. Great build nonetheless. Just thought it was worth pointing that out

Thank you. And you may be right - I was looking at reference images of the Mk18 since thats what I was building and could be an oversight on my part. The images I was using definately showed a headrest but both aircraft had been restored so the inaccuracies could have occurred from there too. Either way if you do need a headrest for one of these the end of a pipette is the perfect size! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed!

@@TheInnerNerd Fair enough. I only learned that you were building a Mk.18 later in the video after I had commented and I assumed you were making a Mk XIV, whoops. And yeah I think it's mostly likely the headrests were omitted during restoration because many preserved Spitfires also omit the gunsights, and we all know that Spitfires had gunsights. Again Airfix obviously referred to a preserved Spitfire which lacked the headrest. Keep up the good work.

@@Frserthegreenengine A bit late, but the Merlin engined Spitfire Mk IX did not have a headrest, and neither did any mark of Spitfire after that. I think the last significant mark to have the 'long' headrest was the Mk V. Preserved later marks do not have them because they were never there to begin with! Some early MkIXs were converted from MkVs and may have retained the headrest.

They are a new company that have just started business. Their Aces of Aces collection has a great range of Polos inspired by the most famous WW2 fighters and are great quality. I wore my Spitfire one to Scale Model World this year and it was very comfortable and caught the attention of a few passers by. I'd highly recommend them if you are an aviation enthusiast! I've built 1/72 one from Academy and I'm really tempted by their 1/48 version as well. I just love the look of an early XIV with Malcolm hood, and the 1/48 comes with invasion stripes to add to that.

The Academy Mk.XIV is bulky and inaccurate in scale. You won't be happy with it..if you display it beside other Spitfires. Then there's the Academy decals...the invasion stripes don't line up very well. Just my opinions. ;)

All Spitfires, were created equally beautiful but this, the Mk. XIV is not an airplane.........it is a poem with wings. Bubble top canopy gives it a very special touch. In the other side, that trick of yours to use as a kind of stencil to create the camouflage, is one I missed out for years. As you British say, my compliments to you.

I basically got back into modelling to make a Spitfire. I really appreciate this video for giving me some ideas on techniques. Blown away that you sanded down the decals as I would have thought for sure they'd be too delicate for that. Just about to finish my very first model after 20 years. Got a cheap Patton tank to practice on basically as it's the detail work Im mostly interested in. Finally put on the decals and it was about as stressful as I remember and was disappointed to see how pronounced they were. I jumped ahead a few steps though and tested the dirt/mud effects I was planning on using and was pretty happy with how it ended up blending together. Once the tank's finished I'll slap together an M8 greyhound to get used to more advanced airbrushing techniques and then it's on to the 1:32 Spitfire! Will probably have watched another dozen of your videos before then so I'm looking forward to seeing what else you've done. Cheers

Nicely done as always. On tip I learned from an old modeler, on the upper wings, if you dry fit everything (lower wing, upper and fuselage) and see that you'll have a gap on the upper wing to fuselage join, is to glue the upper wing first (no gap) than tackle the lower wing. This means all your filling and sanding is on the lower wing where there is less detail and their is not that curved/difficult transition between the fuselage and upper wing. Doesn't work with every kit, so dry fit everything first but I've found it to make thing easier at times.

Guys like Will Pattison and Matt McDougall (Doog's Models) gripe and complain about every kit that doesn't fall together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Thanks for being a true modeler.

Nice build. Thanks for the upload and the work on this. I am building this now and am disappointed at the poor fit quality in a few places for a 2019 kit. Although it's nothing that can't be corrected, it would be nie to see Airfix up their game. I cannot believe no one saw these faults.

Thank you! Yes it's not a very impressive kit since it's so new and Airfix have plenty of experience with Spitfire kits by now! I would have expected the fits to be better especially around the wing roots. This can be solved by cutting away the landing gear connection under the fuselage and this will allow for the fit to be more snug. But even so its not something you want to be doing and a major adjustment to the parts to get them to fit

Headrest was not fitted to later Spitfires, including the Mk 18, so not a mistake by Airfix.

Thanks for sharing your build, interesting that the kit has a few issues. I will admit that I would now expect that new tooled kits should be of a higher standard of quality & fit at this stage. Nice video, Im just starting out at 45, all that weathering and detailing is beyond me right now and I will take time to grow the kit. Is a lot of it trial and error, following channels like yours and expanding (I never thought of pencils). I did a 1/72 starter kit, noted some of your paint choices from here (especially the silver and aluminium), what now, just keep building and trialling things seen on youtube?

Thank you and welcome to the hobby :) It'll all come with time. Keep trying out new stuff and seeing what others do. But you're right, it's all very daunting at first but the best way I learned was to try something new on each model and pick the next model based around something new to learn. That can be a different paint scheme (like RAF land camo vs. US Navy blue) or different weathering using the subject theatre (dust and sand vs. carrier based). Eventually you'll build an arsenal of skills and equipment to tackle anything that come your way. But mostly it's down to watching and re-watching my videos ;) Hope this helps, best of luck and thanks for watching :)

@The Inner Nerd, Very nice build. Just wondering where you got the Print for the camo masks? I have issues when it comes to doing camos on 1:48 and 1:72 Raf aircraft.

Thank you! I got them from google search. The image I found was for a Mk.I but the RAF camo transfers over pretty much the same give or take. There is also a good website I use for ribvet blueprints too which is www.airwar.ru/other/draw/. They also have camo blueprints in some of the files available if google images isn't providing what you need. Failing that I scan the decal callout from the kit and scale it up to fit the model size 1:1

Really nice build! One point: Rotol 5-blade props were wood, so gunmetal or silver-grey chipping on blades, suggesting metal underlying the paint, is not appropriate.

As I explained at the start of the video I wanted to show the kit exactly as Airfix intended and make no adjustments to the parts supplied. I think the other reviews show the kit after modification which solves the issues. This is great to see how to fix them, but if you're buying a kit you want to see if it's worth the money in my opinion. So thats why I made it straight from the box, showing what you really get. I hope this is a more useful way of presenting rather than covering up design issues.

Hello and thank you. I’m not an expert on the Spitfire variants but I believe the MkXVIII is the same as I have built here. So yes you’re right - longer wings and larger rudder which come in the kit. Hope it goes well and the video gives you a heads up for the troubles that lie in wait on this kit!

Nearly 3 years late, but there are other differences in the wing: there are no outer machine gun bays nor corresponding hatches, there being instead a hatch for desert survival equipment where the no longer used 303 Browning ammo tanks were stored.

Harits Al Fawwaz airfix Shorts Tucano, it’s tiny, has fairly mediocre detailing and only requires one colour, or two if you take into account the clear coat

It didn't. Headrests disappeared around the Mk V. It was perceived as a safety issue.

Great job on a sub par kit molded in 2019! Not sure how Airfix would approve this to be sold. Imagine if you are a new modeler or new to Airfix ....this could well be your first and last Airfix kit.

The panel lines are what get me. If they could scale those properly, the kits wouldn't suffer as much. But their Mustang is better than the Tamiya pop.

Thank you. I get the feeling this kit hasn't really gone through a lot of real world build tests after the tool sign off. It seems to be a great kit in CAD and I'm sure it works well on all the assembly simulations they ran. But with real world variables the parts aren't consistent enough to fit properly.

They take me between 60 & 100 hours depending on how well it goes and the complexity of the kit. Around 6 weeks of work since I don't do this full-time. Thaanks for watching :)

Watching you work on this video was a sheer joy but I did get confused that your your paintwork on the finished article depicts the Battle of Britain invasion colours when the world was long over when that particular model or Spitfire was built the Mark 14 didn't even have a Merlin engine to do with Battle of Britain colours you need to use Mark 1 Spitfire

Hello and thank you. The invasion stripes on this Mk14 are from the Korean war, not the invasion of Europe, so have different spacing to that of the earlier spitfires too

The MK XIV entered service in the spring of 1944 and participated in the Normandy landings, and from June 1944 until December January ? Would have invasion stripes

Sir hi, you have a very cool model, but I fail to understand why is the Music so loud, we at times can`t hear what you are saying. The invasion stripes you have made on the model are wrong, there should be three white stripes & two black stripes. You can still do it on the wings only by adding a white stripe & same for the fuselage. Ask any body. Only trying to help a fellow modeller.

These are not D-day or Operation Musketeer "invasion" stripes, but instead Korean War stripes and are correct. Unfortunately I think 28 (AC) Squadron whose markings are shown flew FR.18's at this time from RAF Kai Tak and Sek Kong.

And the invasion stripes are from the Korean war so do not match the D-Day stripes you are referring to. You can clearly see on the decal sheet I used thay the stripes are narrower too than those used foe the invasion of Normandy. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video

@@vernonrabbetts Thats right and thanks for pointing out the correction. Although the title says Mk14 FR I have actually made an 18 since the rudder option supplied in the kit allowed for a Mk18 build. Therefore used the Mk18 decals from Model Alliance to allow me to include the stripes from the Korean war

Invasion stripes were 3 white stripes bracketing two black stripes...

These are Korean war stripes and not D Day invasion stripes. That's why they a're thinner and not in the same layout as the ones you're referring to

Very cool but if you want to be more accurate you should cut the wing tips off because on the mk.xiv it had a higher roll rate even though it lost its iconic shape.
