Entering service in 1938, the Westland Lysander was initially used in the army co-operation role, providing artillery spotting, reconnaissance and light bombing duties. Despite some initial success in the early stages of the Second World War, the army quickly determined that the aircraft was unsuitable for this role, being too fast for artillery spotting, too slow to evade enemy fighters and too big and heavy to conceal on the ground.
It was replaced in this co-operation duty by aircraft such as the Tomahawk and Mustang as the war progressed, but due to the excellent short take off and landing qualities of the Lysander, it found a use with special operations. Earning a place in military history for being the aircraft that could deploy and extract agents from occupied countries during clandestine activities.
Join me in this video as I build and review the Airfix Westland Lysander Mk.II in w/72 scale.

Hi Matt, great vid! I've recently been building some old Airfix sky king airliners and what works for me with those older decals is: water only on the model, place the decal, squeez the water out from under by firmly rolling with a cotton bud working out from the centre. When you're happy with the placement, then, and only then, apply setting solution of your choice. If the decal moves while you're rolling it, brush more water on and re-position, repeat. You're not committed until you add setting solution. If you're thorough with the first step silvering should be behind you forever.

Have you ever made a Matchbox 1/72 Lysander? It's a lovely little model. My late father just missed the war. He was called up in late 1945, and initially based near Luneberg Heath in Germany. At some point, he was offered a lift in a Lysander, which was probably being used as a 'hack', completely unaware of the machine's STOL capabilities. He told me that it was the first, and only time that he was afraid in an aircraft, convinced that the take off would end in some trees that looked too close for comfort.

I do talk about that kit in this video - I would like to get one to draw a comparison

Yes I've built this and many many other airfix kits from 1981 onwards along with many other brands too ofcourse, and airfix wasn't always the best out there but still pretty good with most there kits, the Westland Lysander was a pleasure to build and paint 👍

Great clip as always and I must say that MM appears to be in the minority of YT Model builders in actually applying glue like a normal person with applicator on the contacting surfaces and not by using a brush and not-insignificant amounts on the exposed-surfaces and then wasting time and effort in hiding the seams and redoing the panel lines :D

Quick tip Matt. Now it seems as though your paint in your airbrush is still abit too thick, such that it sprays with many small dots around the area you spray. If you thin it correctly, it should spray relatively smoothly with and smooth and soft edge. With regard to the paint type, i do feel that you should try some tamiya acrylics paints as they are one of the morr forgiving airbrish paints out there as they spray relatively well and dry pretty fast. The only downsides to them however is: 1. They smell abit(not as bad as laquers but still) and 2. They require thinning, but given that you have some experience with Tamiya acrylic thinners, it shouldn't really be a problem, so just thin it to a ration of either 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner or 3 parts paint to 1 part thinner. In terms of airbrush ready paints, I haven't used them yet. However, I do feel that thinning your paint yourself, although annoying to do, adds to the experience of airbrushing, and it can be optimised to your liking as airbrush ready paint may either be too thick or too thin for the pressure you are using and may cause some problems in terms of over spray, but in the end this is just my opinnion and its up to you what you want to do. Hope this helps you in your journey of airbrushing and I cant wait for more!

Thanks for the info! I'll have to keep this in mind. I have managed to get my hands on some airbrush ready paints though . . so let's see how they go :)

Nice video as always Matt and great work on an old dog of a kit. I went down the nostalgia route a few years back with the old Airfix Avro Anson which was my first ever kit I had as a kid, managed to make it look pretty good with the help of some aftermarket decals 😉 on a side note with regards to the Lysander, Dora Wings released a new tool 1/72 kit of the MK.3 last year which I'd imagine is a better kit to build, I feel that there was a build article in AMW not long ago for it as well 🤔 Anyway all the best and look forward to your next video!

This is one of your best paint jobs. Very nicely done. You can use blue tack as well for masking the camoflage. Also, if you paint light colours like yellow, red, orange, etc., alway prepaint with white, that will make the colour pop more. I can recommend Ammo by Mig, Vallejo, Hataka (acrylic lines) and Mission Models. All of them water based non-toxic and odourless.

Great build,I remember buying this kit many years ago - wasn't in a box,it was in a plastic bag with cardboard stapled to it with the artwork printed on there - 1970's - those kits used to retail at 29p - unbelievable how much they cost today in comparison.

I thought it would be interesting to compare that price with inflation today, so I looked it up. Apparently 30p in 1970 would be around £5 today. So really, prices haven't changed much at all

Another very interesting video. I have encountered similar problems with masking tape for camouflage and the airbrush so I have reverted to hand brushing. In fact, I have (nearly) given up with the airbrush altogether so I am interested to follow your exploration of using it. I guess it mainly comes down to practice. Thinning matt varnish acrylic with hot water - that’s a new one for me. Having recently ruined a Matador & 5.5’ gun and a Bren gun carrier by spraying with Humbrol Acrylic Varnish from the can, I’ll try your method next time. Also, using hot glue to make a spare light was very creative - another idea for future situations. Thanks for the video.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! I think the problem with the masking tape was that it was cheap - it had quite low quality glue on it compared to the more specialist masking tape which has better hold. I've not had any problems with the other kind of tapes, just this particular one

It seems to be that you still have issues with cleaning up the parts and filling of gaps. The paintjob is rather crude but ok for the problems you faced. This kit goes back to 1973 and is beside its thickness and the none existend interior a pretty good replica, there is no need for recessed panel lines on this kit. If you wanna go overboard trim the thickness down, make a new canopy, trim down the ladder, make a instrumentpanel and the fueltank. But even straight of the box with some care it can be a good model.

@@ModelMinutes I guess so. I had the same problem with an Italeri 1/72 Waco CG-4A (it wasn’t the only issue with that kit…). I took some plastic sheet and lengthened each of the struts by about 2 mm, then worked slowly away until the dihedral was ok.

I would avoid spraying Humbrol colours in your airbrush. The consistency of the paints and pigments are terrible and don't give a very smooth finish. I started using Revell Aqua Colour with the Revell Aqua Colour thinners. Its another relatively cheap alternative and gives a better finish overall. Also I wouldn't use water as a thinner as it doesn't have the best properties (not pure enough) to help the paint adhere to the surface.

I’d like it if you could do the 1/72 scale Douglas dakota dc3 in the eagle has landed colour scheme and diorama perhaps? 🤔

Could you 3D print figures for models which don't have them? Perhaps Airfix / Revell etc could provide STL files n their websites? That would save them manufacturing them too.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 2 года назад
this is a point that i have suggested to some manufacturers, but yet to see if any take it up

@@ModelMinutes Perhaps they are worried about the models being shared with non-customers. Maybe linked somehow to Flying Hours or the purchase?

@@julianmhall yeah, they’d have to be free files because there is nothing stopping people from sharing them electronically if they want to

Obviously a rather old kit...I would have sanded down the oversize rivets and the protruding panel lines, for instance on the tailplane and engrave them anew with an exacto knife or a scriber. Some seams and the trailing edges of the wings need a bit revision...finally I would replace the silver painted landing lights on the landing gear spats with a piece of transparent sprue...

The sound like some good improvements to make. I wasn't overly fussed though - perhaps next time
