I use that same little PacSafe cross body bag that you are showing. It’s not much bigger than a wallet, but holds the vital stuff: Phone (biggest Samsung), passport, credit cards, cash, copies of assorted dox. I wear it cross body at the airport, take it off and bury deep in personal item going through security. After going through security, I put it on like a waist pack and pull my loose-fitting dark-coloured tee or sweater down over it. Bag is now invisible but still accessible. It stays there until trip is over. I use it as a daily carry while traveling, though my passport and spare credit cards will usually be in an under-clothing security pouch. It keeps phone, card, cash safe while I carry a tote or backpack for jacket, water bottle, tissues, etc. I’ve owned many little anti-theft bags, but this one is hands down the best.

Craziest bin fight was over 'artisan' bread. 3 ft bread took an entire bin, and the woman was adamant it could only be used for 'her' bread because it was artisan. $15. My husband got up, put the bread in her lap (yes she was squawking) he loaded the luggage and then put the bread above it. As she spooled up to start screaming, he gave her that look he has. This is the one thing that I don't like about this channel - I know most of the time, the tips are within the rules, but I do feel like it's taking the piss (to use a Kiwi term) a bit, when 'normal' travellers who check their luggage and just take *one bag* (and an actual appropriately-sized personal item, like a handbag) are disadvantaged because there's not enough storage space with the massive carryon luggage everyone seems to bring - I just feel like the advice to use carryon only is a bit irresponsible, and is perpetuating the problem. I usually travel internationally for vacations because you get one or two free checked bags. The flight is more expensive but everything else is cheaper than the US. I wear hiking shorts with many zipper pockets and I carry an Igloo brand case that acts as a personal bag that goes under the seat and becomes a beach cooler when I get to my destination. This has worked out perfectly for me and I never put a bag in the overhead bin and it’s easier for me to board and deboard. I just brought home a lot of ceramic and glass from Mexico and I wrapped it in bubble wrap and put it in my checked bag and one special piece of glass art in my personal bag. I flew with my mother 2 years ago. We paid little for Spirit Airline. The normal carry-on I used to travel now an inch taller than required. My mother carry a bag of knitting stuffs and her carry-on. We ended up have to pay extra $$ for the both carry-on. Later, we paid another $150 to extend our trip. When we rode the bus to the airport, we missed our flight. So we have to pay to get the return tickets. We also paid one extra for carry-on on the way home. That trip cost me original $350 to $2000 for 2 of us. I just came home from 2 month trip to China. On the way home, I was worry my luggage might be overweight. So I put on 4 heavier pants, 5 long shirts, and wrap the big jacket around my waist at the Check in gate. After got into the airplane, I took them off and put into my expandable carry-on bag, which I purchased from TEMU. I do wish we can ride bullet trains or subway like in China. You can carry as much as you can into the train and only take few second. The trains in China always earlier or on time and fast.

There are ways to not pay bag fees. I've flown for many years and rarely, if ever, pay for bag fees. 1) Fly an airline that doesn't charge for bags; yes, they exist. 2) Airline status or loyalty programs - some employers offer status as a perk for some airlines. Plus, if you fly often enough or earn status through credit cards, you can get free bags. 3) Airline credit cards - If you fly more than once a year on the same airline, the fee for the card more than covers the bag fees you'd pay. (Free bags are often a perk). Airline cards also help you earn the aforementioned airline status. 4) Buy a higher class of service 5) If the gate agent asks for volunteers to check bags, they will often waive fees. Learn to do some homework and become a more educated traveler. Use the system to your advantage.

@@DoReMeaCulpa Do you think people would be doing it if the airlines charged the baggage fee as part of the ticket? Or do you think people would be doing it if baggage fees were reasonable? They're not, by the way. In many cases they are more than the ticket itself. For example, if a Ryanair flight that would cost €60 without luggage included (1 reasonably-sized carry-on that is adequate to store small clothing items, toiletries, etc. for a short trip to the sun + 1 small item purse/sling/shopping bag/pillow) now cost €100 but with the luggage included, and Ryanair were strict on the size and quantities of these bags, would people be complaining and trying to cheat the system? Or another example, if a Ryanair flight cost €60 without luggage fees but had an optional luggage fee of €10 for the aforementioned bag quantities/sizes, would people be complaining and trying to cheat the system? How many would risk it for €10 on a €60 flight? I know myself I would just pay the €10. But as I said, it's never just €10. From what I can tell, the reason for the frustration and adoption of 'cheating' and 'deception' is because airlines themselves are being 'deceptive' and are 'cheating' the customers. They advertise low fare airline tickets, but then squash you with needlessly difficult booking procedures and baggage limits. The whole process from these companies is a deliberate attempt to manipulate consumers. That's why consumers are rejecting it and finding loopholes, in my opinion. Not because they're selfish or dishonest but because they are being manipulated and won't stand for it. Change the system and the consumers might change with it.

If a flier is paying €60 for the ticket and €10 for the baggage versus €30 for the ticket and €40 for the baggage, what consumer is not going to question the legitimacy of that and try to find a way around it by steadily increasing the size or quantities of their bags? It's common sense. The customer would pay the exact same amount, but in their mind it's completely reasonable and par for the course. The whole system is broken. It manipulates consumers into paying more than what they think is justifiable. But take away the ambiguity and the frustration of overpriced baggage fees while increasing the cost of the ticket to ensure airlines earn their wages, the issue might just disappear.

How is this only just happening in the US? Airlines have been strict about carry-on baggage in Europe for decades, including one carry-on bag only (no personal item, unless you're travelling business class). Some carriers even have a stricter size limit than standard for carry-on items. When I was travelling a lot, I used a lightweight backpack within the dimensions for carry-on luggage. No wheels and telescopic handle means more weight for clothes etc. A backpack is better than a shoulder bag because it distributes the weight across both shoulders, so there's less possibility of back trouble (from personal experience). And if you're at the gate with a backpack and it looks within the allowed size and doesn't look overstuffed, it is less likely to get weighed.

Its already inherently unfair that everyone else can have two completely empty carry on bags to fill up, and I often can’t. If it becomes only one bag I may as well not take anything with me.

I remember after 9/11 airlines saying bag fees were going to be a temporary thing to help get them back on track after the government bailouts. But like most fees once they are in place it's very, very hard to get them removed once the additional revenue is realized. I'm more frustrated with ppl bringing these huge roller bags on board that are as big as my case that I checked then when space is full ppl getting free gate check. That's not fair. Should I just bring my suitcase and expect a gate check? It's gotten to the point that I now fly domestic first to get free bags, better snacks ans a meal if its over so far. 700 miles I think.

I stopped flying years ago after 9/11. Airports and airlines are totally out of control with regulations and fees. Then they wonder why passengers get unruly on the plane. Never used to be that way. I loved flying back when society was normal.

I don't travel often, but so far only one airline bothered to weigh my carry- on prior to 2019, and they were quite strict about it! (It was Air New Zealand). I saw some pretty shameless carry-on behavior on my last trip to the UK, for sure. There was an older Asian couple with two carry-on sized pieces each, PLUS personal items, and they had the gall to put all 4 bags into the overhead bin of our Virgin plane when 2 should have been checked. Plus people with the GIANT bags that are definitely not carry-on sized, and the ones who stick their bags above YOUR seat instead of theirs, because yours is closer to the exit. Ugh. Flying just brings out the worst in everyone, airlines included. I completely understand weighing bags and not allowing shopping bags as separate (free) personal items anymore, but making you count a pillow as one of your two luggage items? Shameless cash grab!

I thank the budget airlines for their tight limits. It's made my 'up' my 'packing game'. 😊 Now 20L is about all I need wherever I go and for however long. This makes such a difference on arrival, especially as I tend to travel point to point on public transport. To me it's simple, follow the rules or check a bag and stop holding the process up and making gate staff lives difficult. Certainly selling a limited number of tickets with cabin bags (as opposed to personal item) has stopped the problem of no space in the overhead bins and as you say people get on the plane quicker.

We always travel with one checked bag and a carryon. Recently we changed the carryon to the “underseat” style to avoid the fight for overhead bin space. This was foiled on our last flight due to the underseat space being blocked by some kind of electrical box, so we ended up having to remove critical items from the bag and try to find overhead bin space after all🤦‍♀️

In Australia we have a 7kg limit. Even with 2 bags it all must be 7kg. A couple airlines allow you to pay for more weight but with the recent flights I’ve been in I’ve seen so many bags that are way over weight. Then last flight I was at I saw a person going through their bag and they had so much unless stuff (they were doing to Sydney for 2 days and they had like 7 days worth of clothes!) People need to pack strategically and not “I might need it later.”

Not to mention that there was an empty overhead right above my seat both times. Some others were allowed their carry-on and backpack. I was questioned about my pillow which was in its bag, and was told that it didn't count as a personal items until I said it was a pillow. Always a terrific and pertinent video. If they want to streamline and speed up boarding, they could just board from the last rows forward. My problem is in my carry on I need to carry a computer, bunch of batteries. None of this stuff is supposed to go in checked in bags. I think without my Nikon ~5 lbs (2 kg), my carry on has been 32 lbs (14.5 kg). As I approach check in or the gate my main carry on is a roll top dry bag, so I roll it down really tight. I also make sure the way I sling it makes it look easy, so the assumption is it's not that heavy, and keep it behind me. I was almost dinged on a ferry because out of curiosity while waiting for my clerk to come back to the counter I weighed my carry on. Another clerk spotted it, scolded me... I started to explain/complain. She gave up, let the other guy decide. A ferry. In Vietnam I was dinged by a truly malevolent clerk. She made me take everything that couldn't be checked out of my blue roll top bag, put it in my light weight day bag. The now checked but empty blue bag weighed 2 kg contained a book, some paper, almost nothing. My bulging Montbell bag was still overweight but allowed. What I take away from your video for my batteries is: be polite, but firm, explain that all the weight is batteries and electronics which can't be checked... and promise I'll be quick, stow it anywhere on board the attendants want, and mention that I always help other passengers with their bags. (I'll pull out the Montbell bag which has what I might need during the flight and leave my bigger carryon in first class at the front of the plane. )

Thanks for sharing, and for distilling it down to your personal takeaway! It sounds like for you it's more a matter of weight than size, as the batteries are compact enough that I assume your bag(s) fit in the sizers no prob. So indeed, I think your takeaway is sound :-)

I'm always convinced that unless you're just flying with a backpack only, those "low cost / budget" airlines actually cost about the same as a major brand like United or Delta (if not more). The only people who really can score good deals are those who just have a backpack that sits under the seat (which is free on pretty much all airlines, budget or luxury).

I heartily endorse the Scott evest model. Not only is it great for securely stowing many things like phone, AirPods, ereader, glasses,RFID passport area, it’s great to wear at your destination even in pickpocket crazy places like Venice and Barcelona. Additionally, you’ll have everything you need during the flight literally “on” you eliminating the need to dive for the underseat bag ( especially when you’re in a bulkhead seat). The down jacket only if you're going somewhere cool/cold, and in terms of ScottEVest, whatever clothing item you feel would most suit your style and needs! There's lots to choose from.
