Why do people become a flight engineer instead of a pilot? They can't get a job after their service.

Because the Flight Engineer is an enlisted job, you have to be an officer to be a pilot or navigator.

flight engineers are needed in civilian life also. They are needed on commercial flights in case there is something wrong with the plane while in flight.

Some people use it as a precursor to becoming a pilot as well. It's pretty common in commercial flying overseas, or at least used to be.

I want to be a pilot in the Airforce and I’m joining in as enlisted as a 19 year old. To become a pilot one must need a bachelor degree and become an officer. Therefore joining as a flight engineer I will have hands on experience with pilots and avionics, meanwhile studying and working towards my bachelor. Doing this will help further my chances on passing the pilots exam and become a better pilot
