From someone who’s from Oakland, the name change comes across as the airport and the city not having pride in who they are/feeling ashamed about it. I do honestly get it if this really does lead to the airport getting more customers, but it feels like salt in the wound after all the sports teams and businesses leaving. Like even the airport wants to leave Oakland.

Those poor tourists whose first experience of “San Francisco” is Hegenberger Rd.

The name “Bay Area International Airport” would’ve been a more suitable name for Oakland Airport, instead of the word salad that the airport was renamed to.

Return the original name to Oakland international airport

As a local, I love flying out of the Oakland Airport for national flights. It's smaller, the security is always fast and efficient, and because its smaller it's easy to get to your gate. I do think this reeks of the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" type stink. Oakland needs to have more pride in itself, its a fantastic city being wildly mismanaged. I understand the rebrand thing but this is just confusing. If you MUST have the SF name in the name call it Oakland SF bay international. Put Oakland first

This is the arrogance and stupidity of OAK's "marketing team". You want to rebrand to better represent your area? Knock yourselves out. But to change it to showcase your competition? That is all-star stupidity. If I'm the FAA, I pull every single penny of funding from OAK for inciting confusion...This is par for the course though in Oakland city government, who are notorious for squandering public assets. Oaklanders, you need a new government, top-to-bottom, and an overhaul of the Port of Oakland, firing the entire management of OAK for instigating an expensive lawsuit from SFO, and wasting much needed capital that could be better used for rennovation and upgrades. "Oakland-Bay Area" would've been fine. "Metropolitan Oakland" was pretty useless, and I get the point of the change. But when I watched the presser they made, and the spin they needed to make sense of it (major fail) I knew these people were going to grab the third rail anyway, just to enshrine their Dunning-Kruger brilliance. It sounds like hyperbole on my part, but this isn't a small deal. And these same people are wholly responsible for the mess all around OAK - the crime, the blight, the crumbling infrastructure around Hegenberger - that may soon render the airport useless anyway...It has always intrigued me as to how, in a region with such an overabundance of "brain talent" and "education", that so many ignorant decisions get made... 🤔...I guess the old adage is true, "Smart people make for a stupid crowd." Also, that intelligence is no guarantor for common sense...

They should have named it Oakland San Francisco Bay airport. The FAA never should have permitted this.

It has been discussed. I live in Oakland. The people who live in and around Oakland think Oakland Int'l Airport was fine. The change is entirely the doing of the idiots on the board that oversees the airport, who don't care what the people want.

That was their entire reasoning behind the name change, that OAK was more convenient and actually closer to San Francisco, and hoping that tourists would pick up on it. Clever in theory, but just plain confusing and controversial in practice.

Name change won't stop the crime or bring the Hilton or other major businesses back. This move is the equivalent of putting a band-aid on a broken leg.

NYC doesn’t have these problems, because all of the area airports are under the control of the Port Authority of NY & NJ. You type NYC as the airport code & it brings up Newark, LaGuardia, & JFK.

I used to live in Oakland and I always flew into SFO because I could take BART straight from the airport to my a block from my apartment. Taking BART was always more convenient than trying to get a ride to OAK.

Commentary from a sports POV hits different than the POV of the regular news or political discourse. I remember the morning of 9-11, i tried listening to a local news station up to the point on instinct i switched over to sports radio to listen to Jim Rome, and obviously his show was cancelled that day, but I stayed on "The TEAM" as it was known as it was a better medium to cope with the day. I bring that up only because it is a similar reasoning i stayed on that channel that i enjoy your non-sports coverage of items. Keep up these different stories that resonates with you, as it will resonate with some of us.

Did anybody but the Oakland people have to approve the name change, the FAA or something? And that Oakland guy is so disingenuous. Of course they're copying SFO, they put San Francisco right at the front of the name. I wonder how many people will inadvertently get connecting flights into OAK and out of SFO (or vice versa). And your London example doesn't hold water because nobody uses London when they talk about them. To be fair, I've never heard of London City but it doesn't look like it handles that many passengers.

I'm surprised airports dont have sponsored names like arena's and stadiums. Here we have Toronto Pearson International Airport although most just call it Pearson Airport it's technically in Mississauga outside of Toronto.

London airports by size are London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stanstead, London Luton, London City, London Southend .... then you get on to the minimally near London .... London Oxford, London Mansten (nearer France than London) and most people drop the London bit of the name

I can see SF Bay - San Francisco Millbrae International Airport / SF Bay - Oakland International Airport / SF Bay - San Jose Mineta International Airport which would kinda feel like London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and London City. I still think the airport rebranding is not really needed.

i'm local to san francisco and while i don't necessarily find this confusing, i do find it incredibly awkward. it feels like oakland is trying to overcompensate for something - and why? just calling it oakland was a perfectly serviceable name. now it just looks like it has an identity crisis. hell, even switching the wording around and calling it "oakland - san francisco bay airport" would at least make slightly more sense. but regardless, this is just the epitome of "solution looking for a problem" and i seriously doubt it's going to get the oakland airport anymore business. oakland's problems run a lot deeper than a facade or a name. it'd do better to focus on its strengths and work to functionality improve its weaknesses as a city - maybe just be less corrupt in its government and police force (i know, a tall order for a US city but still) and work on improving more of its infrastructure rather than just pretending a name change on the airport is going to magically make more people want to go to oakland. it just feels awkward, vapid, and not very substantive. just be yourself, oakland, and work on improving your city instead.

I don't think it that big of deal -- although the names do become confusing. As you point out, metro areas with multiple airports have unique names that identify themselves. Chicago-O'Hare vs Chicago Midway. Dulles, National or even Baltimore. Same for NY, LA, Dallas, Houston and so on. When booking flights to these areas the airline/booking sites tell you there are multiple areas and if I don't know the area, then do a quick check -- where am I going and which airport is closest. That simple.

This happens everywhere as they use the larger city in the area to bring in passengers to their airport. In Orlando you have Orlando International and in nearby Sanford is Orlando-Sanford. I also heard that Daytona Beach was considering changing the airport name to Orlando-Daytona.

It's ridiculous for "The City" to get more credit for Oakland Crime & Homelessness. Granted, San Francisco has its own issues. 49ers play in Santa Clara & Stanford and Cal play in ACC, Atlantic Coast Conference. Everything is MADE confusing INPURPOSE.

Good vid Brodie! As a Bay Area sports fan that also loves aviation I love your content related to it! I live in AZ and usually visit the Bay Area once a year during the summer and fly into both and I would say that it's faster to take Bart into the city from Oakland but I like seeing all the architecture at SFO when I land. I think a good solution to this would be for OAK to be named "Oakland SF Bay International Airport" without the full word "San Francisco" in it!

I grew up in Marin County. We would often fly out of OAK on PSA, Air Cal, or Hughes Air West. When I began my airline career, I started with World Airways out of OAK. Then, worked with Eastern Airlines at SFO. Both airports offered their own unique aspects for passengers. Instead of trying to confuse passengers, just name OAK, Oakland International Airport. When booking flights, most passengers realize OAK is just across the Bay from San Francisco.

I wonder what the numbers are on people who wanted to fly to SJO, but went to SJC and vice versa. I know it's happened. Some people are just... special. Once while I worked at SFO I met two girls who'd entered the wrong terminal, gone to the wrong gate, to try and board the wrong flight, on the wrong airline, to the wrong destination. When I denied them boarding It took every ounce of my self restraint to not ask how they survive in life and what on Earth made them think this was their flight. It's still a mystery to me how TSA even let them into the terminal with boarding passes for an airline that wasn't there.

As an outsider, I would rather see SFO called San Francisco International and OAK as Oakland International. Most people who are going to the Bay Area should know where both are... Anything else is confusing.

They should have never changed the name. Metro Oakland International Airport isn't what the city should be working on. Expanding the airport with more terminals and flights is what needs to be done.

It's just trickery by the Oakland Airport, plain and simple. They know full well this is going to cause confusion and even though only 6 people have been reported to have had problems, multiples more probably figured out the problem themselves, found a solution and made their way into the City. When officials at Baltimore Friendship airport wanted to pick up more of the metro DC business, they changed the name to Baltimore/Washington International (BWI). How about Oakland/SF Bay International?

To me the Oakland rebrand makes sense. I'm from the east coast, and I live in the Bay Area. When friends and family visit, they would always fly into SFO. For people who aren't from here, there is a general lack of understanding that OAK was just as, if not more, convenient than SFO. It isn't that weird for airports to just go by the biggest nearby city. I'm thinking London Heathrow vs London Gatwick

I suspect this name change was inspired by "burbank-glendale-pasadena airport" changing its name to "Hollywood Burbank airport" and getting a massive increase in passengers. In a similar case to Oakland, it is probably more convenient to use Burbank airport to get to Hollywood than it is to use LAX (plus most of the Hollywood studios are located in Burbank anyway). The difference there, of course, is that "hollywood" and "los angeles" are WAY more distinctive than "san Fransisco" and "San Fransisco bay" are.

If the BART union hadn’t torpedoed a direct electrified connector to OAK, an an airport 15 minutes faster to get to from Embarcadero than SFO, I would feel more comfortable with the name change.

There are other cities with the same airport name and people get used to it. New York, Washington DC, Chicago and Dallas

Since everyone seems to need to justify their existence, I will qualify myself as well. Born and raised in SF. This is not confusing. There is a distinct difference between San Francisco and San Francisco Bay. Two different things. Read the name. SFO does not own San Francisco Bay. Confusion is user error. Many, many cities and towns have Main Street. If they go to the wrong city, it’s their fault. Oakland is not calling their airport San Francisco. It’s San Francisco Bay. You will not need to rename SFO.

Just do what we do in NYC and name the airports after people. Boom, problem solved.

I hate to be that guy, but one little inaccuracy. David Chiu is San Francisco's "City Attorney" not the "District Attorney", here he is representing the city in a civil matter, where the district attorney deals with criminal matters.

Well down in SoCal Ontario has a similar thing where it's Ontario Los Angeles and then there's LAX so kind of similar problem but people out here figured it out

Brodie, you're a pilot. Imagine the following scenario. You're IFR, and file for SFO. However, as you're flipping through the Jeppesen airport diagrams and punching in the approach, tower, and ATIS frequencies - OOOPS! - you landed a page short to "San Francisco Bay" instead of "San Francisco International", and progged the radios and navs for the other side of the Bay. You get to the Bay, and you're now confusing the hell out of the controllers trying to figure out where you want to go, and who are vectoring you around places you don't need to go...Airline passengers? Don't care. Get on the BART and fix your situation. (Unless you're MAGA and terrified of immigrants and public transportation as a whole, then I guess you're either stuck with a rental car, or you're screwed. Still don't care.) It's the confusion on the airside that can get really real, really fast...

Oakland- SF Bay Area International Airport. Call it that. Imagine if all Los Angeles area airports had Los Angeles in their name? For example, calling Ontario, Los Angeles-Ontario International Airport? Maybe it is harder confusing LAX with the other smaller commercial airports in that area, but still. Also, I have seen airlines call Newark Airport in New Jersey as New York/Newark Airport. That could be confusing as well.

I don't see the big deal, pretty much every major metropolitan area in the world has multiple international airports that all use the metro in the airport name. SF is one of the top tourist destinations in the country, especially for international visitors. Makes perfect sense that Oakland wants to try and capture some of that inbound traffic.

Surely there must occasionally be passengers showing up at the wrong Chicago or New York or DC or LA area airport, no way it never happens in those cities too. Would really need to compare numbers but seems like a very low problem rate either way.

I think the bigger problem are people who book flights and they arrive at the wrong airport, because they inputted San Francisco in an airline app. Some people also fly into SFO, spend a day in San Francisco before returning to SFO to catch a connecting international flight to Asia. If you land at OAK, you have to collect up your luggage, take a cab or Uber to SFO, check your luggage, then only maybe have half a day in San Francisco.

Last year I was flying out of JFK, and on the TSA line, a couple realized that their flight was out of La Guardia…. Probably people are going to get confuse either way

Tennis player a few years back was flying into Las Vegas NV (LAS) for a tournament and ended up booking to Las Vegas NM (LVS) and missed her gig as she landed a mere 487 nautical miles "short". OOPS. Confusion happens everywhere with silly humans. 😳

Oakland must've used Arte Moreno as a consultant on this name change. It's in the style of "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim."

Jay Foreman did a great video on the London Airports from a historical and practical example. There are 6 London airports, including one in Brighton, which is closer to France than London.

I grew up in the Bay Area, in the south bay. San Franciscans think they OWN the entire bay.

How about Frankfurt Germany? Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), and Frankfurt Egelsbach Airport (QEF). I can tell you that getting dropped off at Frankfurt-Hahn will come as a real surprise. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is located approximately 120 km from Frankfurt. That's 75 miles for the locals.

Spitballing here but I always thought SFO was an odd abbreviation for "SF International", my idea is SF becomes "SFI - SF International" and Oakland becomes "SFRO - SF Regional Oakland" for a few years till people get used to it and eventually shorten it to SFO. I think that would end up satisfying both parties in the end, with minimal confusion.

You can’t take international out of the Oakland name. Maybe San Francisco international and East San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport. Just add the cardinal direction!

6 passenger came to an information counter? Uh, exactly where are these booths? The only one I know if is in San Diego, down in baggage claim. Lost passengers generally find somebody in uniform (gate agents, pilots, or flight attendants). Challange: How many information counters are there in SFO. What is the average walking time from one to the other. How many gate agents (gates) do you pass on the way to that information counter? So no surprise... only 6 people when to these counters about this issue.

Oakland won't get more passengers with the name change. They need more airlines. Since JetBlue left there are no direct flights to New York City from Oakland. Bring back direct flights to New York City and you will have more passengers.

Yeah I can see the issue SFO has with this and the confusion this would cause. My vote: close both and make everyone fly into San Jose 😂

Growing up in Dallas, there are two airports in the DFW metroplex. DFW is the main international airport for the city(and a hub for American Airlines), while Dallas Love is the hub for Southwest. I'm not against two airports having the same "city name"(hell, NYC has two international airports!); it feels like lying when one is in another city-yet goes by San Fransico.

I think that the new name is somewhat confusing, and I don't think that changing the name will attract more passengers to OAK. Right now, if I'm flying on United Airlines, I will probably be flying through SFO. If I'm on Southwest, then OAK is the obvious choice. If OAK wants to attract more passengers, they need to attract for flights from carriers other than Southwest. I am not from the Bay Area, so I have no local knowledge.

If Oakland wants to compete, at all, it needs a 24 hour rent a car. I don't care what they name it, I'm not flying there until they do 😂

Dude, you’re crazy saying it’s quicker to get from Oakland across the bridge to San Francisco. The bridge traffic is always way worse than traffic into the city from the south Also, where exactly do you live? Anybody they live in the Bay Area usually say the bay area because they want to lump themselves in San Francisco, but don’t live in a cool neighborhood :)
