Airtab Vortex Generators For RV's. Works Great !!Fuel Saver -RV Wind Deflector. Installation and performance of vortex generators or Airtabs. they work great for wind stabilization
I installed Airtab Vortex Generators for RV's on my motor-home to gain fuel mileage and deflect turbulent wind during driving for better stability and safety.

The first time I seen the Airtab Vortex Generators was on a RU-vid video posted by "2012escapee" (thank you 2012escapee) about a year or so ago. I haven't purchased them yet for my motorhome but I am getting closer as I follow fellow RV'er's who are sharing their experiences with them. I appreciate RVerTV for sharing this video and can't wait to hear how they worked out on a trip.

Russ , Used these for about 6 months on a KW T680 - did not notice a difference . Running 53 - 55 mph and backing out of the throttle on the hills saved much more fuel . Max tire pressure and side - to - side weight balance also seemed to help . I will try to talk to owners that I see using these . Be Safe

In theory, the vortices generated by these devices help to cancel the parasitic drag created by external surface irregularities on the coach/truck/airplane. The idea came directly from aerospace. I wish I had thought to market them myself; I used to install them on airplanes. Enjoy your videos and Scoobs ....

I've seen a couple of videos in the past where people had them on their rigs. Other than that, I haven't seen them being used. I look forward to hearing from you what your experience with the air tabs will be. There you go again, helping us make an informed decision on your experience. Thank Russ, your the best man!

I'm going to add these to my 12' tall cargo trailer. It creates a low pressure system near the front from the V nose and causes the door to pull out. I found the 80 piece kit on ebay for $98.

When Air Tabs first came out, I thought. Here we go another Gimmick ! But You can really see a difference in rain, you watch a trailer with them and one with out. And it really does work. Bad thing in a tractor trailer in rain is your mirrors getting spray on them. The drivers with air tabs said it helps with that a lot. As far as fuel, in a big truck if you could save a 10th of a mile on fuel over 120,000 miles that's money in your pocket. Hay, every little bit works !

+RJ's adventures thanks... I was more concerned with buffering and wind turbulence in a bus... this is my second big rig....and if it helps a little on fuel thats a plus.... you would think they would make better body designs on big buses and trucks

VG's are used on many aircraft wings and the reason being is for slower stall speeds and better control of aircraft at slower speeds such as landing! Many "STOL" (bush pilots, off airport use etc)aircraft use them for these features. Big difference is the installation. On air craft the v is forward and there is a gap!..

Good Video, thanks, Russ! With gas prices going down, I don't think I'll do that soon. Now, when I paid $5 gallon not to long ago in Cali, I would do it especially when I'm at 5-7 mpg.

Think of the reduction in wear and tear on the drive train. 2-4% fuel saving matters big time on big rigs.

I watched your vid because i was considering the Airtab Vortex Generator; of course, i know you made it a very long time ago. I was wondering if you remember how they worked and did they actually save on fuel? Did they stick to the body and did they start falling off after you started washing the rig? Thanks if you can respond.

I found them good on crosswinds and when passing Large trucks, dint get pushed sideways as much! on a trip in a small 4 ton rv, I Drove from Windsor UK to Noli Italy and back and Airtabs saved me a hundred miles on my fuel bill, the entire trip was 1927 miles, ive done 7 similar trips like this so far, price of fuel in the UK and Europe is scandalously high, so that is a saving for me of around £190 GBP ($300) in just one year! i use a scanguage 2 to monitor my fuel constantly!

Extremely skeptical - haven't taken fluid dynamics for a *long* time, but the fluid has to go somewhere. Certainly behind those solar panels, the fluid ( air ) is already so turbulent, that any effect is minimal, at best. Further, the deflection of the fluid outward comes at the cost of a lower pressure area in the back - a vacuum. That will have a slight pulling effect, so it's quite possible to cost MORE fuel, rather than less. I'd really like to see these in a wind tunnel. It would seem that something forward of the main part of the coach that causes cavitation may be effective. It's also possible that these things cause cavitation on the sides, which WOULD allow slightly easier motion through the fluid.

3 Years ... time to notice long term averages ... is there a follow up on this? FYI there is a reported 3% gain just from wheel covers. The fender skirts like on the old Caddys should work on the rear. Toyoda has a video showing their production car(s) of their VG version. In the 70's the air dam was being used as a DIY mod. My thoughts were to use industrial rubber sheet material under the bumper so that it would flex when hit, but stiff enough to resist the wind. MAN has a video where they mention the side mirrors, replacing them with cameras. The average RV roof is such a mess that I am thinking that the issue is hopeless. Happy Trails.

How do you measure actual performance of these things? Did you take base line measurements of gas mileage etc. to compare before and after data? Frankly, I'm very skeptical. I think the principle makes sense but I would need measurable and verifiable data before I would stick these things on my RV.

Hello there. Did you ever look into using a wind belt (electric generator) to do the same thing, and to charge Ur battery bank at the same time? Essentially turning the wind belt into air spoilers to reduce resistance by distrubing air flowing behind the vehicle while turning that air disturbance into power. I'm looking into this now, was wondering if you'd looked into it at all?

Hiya Russ, I'm new to your channel and find it interesting and educational. I wonder why we don't see these on all the big name rv's? Why haven't they installed and colour coded (I'm from wet n windy England) them into the paint job? Normally, anything that they can justify doing i.e. Charging for the parts and labour, they will do. Oh well, I'm sure one of them will wake up to the extra dollars soon. Lol.

if these things even improved fuel mpg just by 1/10 of one percent, every commercial trailer would have them already. they only work to empty your pockets of much needed cash.

Vortex Generators use the same effect that golf-ball dimples use, except on a golf-ball we don't know where the front and back is because the ball is spinning, so we cover the entire ball, whereas on a car or plane we do indeed know where the front and back is, so we only place them strategically instead of covering the entire thing.
