Ajahn Amaro (born 1956) is a Theravadin teacher, and abbot of the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery at the eastern end of the Chiltern Hills in south east England. The centre, in practice as much for ordinary people as for monastics, is inspired by the Thai forest tradition and the teachings of the late Ajahn Chah. Its chief priorities are the practice and teaching of Buddhist ethics, together with traditional concentration and insight meditation techniques, as an effective way of dissolving stress.
Ajahn Amaro was born Jeremy Charles Julian Horner in Kent. He was educated at Sutton Valence School and Bedford College, University of London. Ajahn means teacher. He is a second cousin of I.B. Horner (1896-1981), late President of the Pali Text Society.
Apart from a certain interest in the theories of Rudolf Steiner-to which he had been introduced by Trevor Ravenscroft,Amaro's principal enthusiasms on leaving university were, by his own admission, pretty much those standard-issue among sceptical students of the day: sex, drugs and rock'n'roll.
Having completed his honours degree in psychology and physiology, in 1977 he went to Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand on an undefined "open-ended" spiritual search. He somehow found himself in northeast Thailand, at the forest monastery of Wat Pah Nanachat. Ajahn Chah's charismatic impact and the encouragement of the senior American monk Ajahn Pabhakaro were decisive. It changed his life. Having become a lay renunciate, four months later he became a novice and in 1979 he received upasampada from Ajahn Chah and took profession as a Theravadin bhikkhu. He stayed in Thailand for two years. Amaro then went back to England to help Ajahn Sumedho establish Chithurst Monastery in West Sussex. With the blessing of his abbot, in 1983 he moved to Harnham Vihara in Northumberland. He made the entire 830-mile journey on foot, chronicled in his 1984 volume Tudong: The Long Road North.
In the early 1990s Amaro made several teaching trips to northern California. Many who attended his meditation retreats became enthusiastic about the possibility of establishing a permanent monastic community in the area.
Amaravati, his mother house back in England, meanwhile received a substantial donation of land in Mendocino County from Chan Master Hsuan Hua, founder of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Talmage. The land was allocated to establish a forest retreat. Since for some years Ajahn Sumedho had venerated the Chinese master, both abbots hoped that, among its other virtues, the center would serve as a symbolic bond between the otherwise distinct Theravada and Mahayana lineages.
Care for what became Abhayagiri was placed in the hands of a group of lay practitioners, the Sanghapala Foundation.[2] Ajahn Pasanno was appointed founding co-abbot of Abhayagiri with Ajahn Amaro. The latter announced on 8 February 2010 that he would be leaving Abhayagiri and returning to England, having accepted a request from Ajahn Sumedho to succeed him as abbot at Amaravati.

Thank you. 🙏🙏🙏 In this talk was the first time I heard the "attachment to rights and rituals" to be presented also in the context of custom and culture. I found this to be a valuable teaching, worthy of further contemplation. Sadhu, Sadhu, Sadhu.

I like how he starts out framing things in Western academic terms. The Theravada tradition seems to get the most consistent results out of people because it is the most 'scientific'.

Ajahn Are you talking about: first level,Kamadhatu,(form& desire) 2ond, Rupadhatu,(form; no desire) 3rd Arupyadhatu (without form and desire)? 3 plains of existence? I get so confused.You are a different branch. I've been studying with the International Buddhist Temple in Richmond,Canada (BC)for 2 years with Venerable Guan Cheng..You are thorough but a little different.He covers a whole lot. There is So very much to learn.I live in AZ.USA and I have no temple to go to.I really like Theravada Buddhism ( Forest Monks) and am so happy I found You, Ajahn Jayasaro, Ajahn Sumedo and of course Ajahn Chah.I wish I could express how much you all have helped me in such a short amount of time.Jayasaro straightened out my meditation in nothing flat. I did not expect anything or anybody was actually going to really help me.

Upeka is a state of mind with conciousness intact so it is not ceesations, adsobtions,samadhi or attainment. Infact many misunderstood upeka in its real sense. The real truth about the secular in language about upeka is balance concentration, effort,mindfulness. Another more clear meaning of upeka is obedient. What is obedient?It is when one meditation mind now has the ability to focus easily on the rising and falling motion of the abdomen. The word sama is like our bahasa Melayu meaning the same. It mean is evenness of mind also mean the mind is now obedient to follow instructions. What instruction? To follow the breath on the abdomen as it rise the mind is fully aware and as it fall the mind is fully aware. This is what actual (sankharupekkha-nana)is all about. Buddhang saranam gacchami

4 noble truth is the way to happiness, calms and ceesation of mind. To accomplished this you will need one who has attain. Why? I will want you to think hard for the answer as to why.Seek the answers yourself or how can it be possible your struggles to nibanna can be accomplished.You can know what i mean,then you are wise and will know what you have to do next. Is stream entry taught in Mahayana, Zen and Vajrayana, since Bodhisattvas delay their enlightenment to help others? 10 'fetters that bind the heart' is a good way to describe it. First 3 fetters are Body-mind-personality self-view, attachment to rites and rituals (inappropriate holding of virtue); and doubt about the spiritual path. 8th and 9th fetter the conceit of I AM and restlessness (subtle dissatisfaction with present and refined attachment) sounds intriguing...

The so called 'Bodhisattva Path' is a later teaching and has nothing to do with original Buddhism. The Buddha entreated his disciples to gain liberation as quickly as possible, and once you have entered the stream, there are a maximum of seven life times to go before the 'fuel of existence' runs completely dry. It is a one-way trip, and 'you' have no ability to 'delay enlightenment' as it were. If you want to learn more about this, then I recommend you study the first four nikayas of the Pali Canon.

I find Bhante Punnajis explanation of "silabataparamasa" much more likely: practising virtue (sila) and goodness (bata) not out of an inner motivation but rather because of being told to by authorities.

I figured out my mistake. I got Stages and levels confused. Except is Rupadhatu the second level and 3rd stage? Am I still wrong?

It is an Experience of non self through the right meditation.Once you experience you realise there is(1) no self. The way you did it has to be the(2, no doubt about it, not rites & rituals) .You also then realise (3) this is the path , since you did it.

What is path n what is not path is What is nibanna as to see ceesations and that is the path to be established.And what is non path is the doubtful in there is uncertainty in such ceesations. So you see the path is or is not then you should now know. Seek it from theone who has experience the path.Now you must seek out these beings then go learn from that beings. Buddhang saranam gacchami

At the 22:30 minute mark it becomes painfully obvious how ridiculous some of what the Buddha said is. Stream entry is a good place to be. Is it worth being stabbed 10 million times over the course of 100 years? Come on, this is definitely the dumbest thing I've ever heard Buddha say. This is why meditators should reject Buddhism outright. One can do meditation very similar to what Buddhism suggests without subscribing to the rest of this nonsense.
