Observe the Four Foundations of Mindfulness in light of the Three Great Marks (annica, anatta, dhukka). This is the wisdom to counter the first Three Fetters and get a foot on the path of stream-entry. The moment the realisation occurs that indeed the Four Foundation of Mindfulness are subject to the Three Great Marks is the moment of stream-entry. This is right view.

@@capitalistcommie6846 I have done so already, thank you. One can surmount the First 3 Fetters with this technique. The application of the theory to the experience (if one practices properly) yields the understanding for insight and stream entry. I have not met any Thai monks nor heard things against Vipassana, but I appreciate there are those in different places of understanding and there are different traditions within the practising. My observation is that its Mahayana vs Theravada, or a mix of the two. Both can yield the entry, but, ultimately it is the understanding that must be developed and caused to arise.

The way Bhante Sujato casually explains the non-attachment to views of self at the end is just so eye-operning. I've been struggling with that for a while now, and since I have no one to talk to or discuss these topics and/or ask questions, I get really lost and confused about what it all means in practice. The idea that "well, you don't have to be anything, so just be yourself" is just... wow.

Just read the suttas and let it clear up your views ,keep the precepts and restrain from sensuality. That will do the job to clarify everything. Doubt is a hindrance that has to be overcome. Once you develop your discernment with the right view and develop the eightfold path you will reach the goal 🙏

11:40 what is faith? - the triple gem No... the stream enterer has total convinced faith in the fact that the Buddha really did attain enlightenment and in the Dhamma, which was there before all Buddhas ever became. In this sense yes it is also triple Gem because he believes in aryas he thinks about death every day he knows when a harmful thought or feeling arises and destroys it in the moment it arises, but is not free from the arising of such thoughts. He knows what is done with pure or impure intention... hence it is not what you do or dont do, rather, what is in your heart (or not in it) when you do say or think something. The presence of selfishness and ignorance? or the absence of it? or somewhere between? and most of us are between.. so important to measure yourself not if you swat the fly or not.. rather, if you have hate and murderous intention in the heart when you swat it or not.. if the feeling 'god damn im gonna kill you' is there, then you are not a sotapanna

this was really useful. I was a bit confused about the non-self part of what makes someone a sotapanna because I wasn't sure if it meant complete lack of self identity or just the incomplete unravelling on attachment to identity, this cleared it up

It is bad to say there is no self. The self is at the core when all of material existence is extinguished. Self: awareness, conscience, intent. When self/spirit binds to a body (form of consciousness), the awareness reads consciousness and writes to it with intent. That makes a body function and that is why all bodies need to trap a spirit with an offering of sense consciousness. Evidently, evolution learned that bodies with spirits function better than bodies that are just biological machines, such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

I have been practicing for the better part of 40 years, in the aggregate 2 years on retreat, thousands of hours on the cushion. I did not achieve stream entry, no one I know has, and no one I know, knows anyone who has attained stream entry. I know monks who seem to psychologically deteriorate over time (though not all). In my experience, around 90% of western monks disrobe. Under these circumstances, it is hard not to question whether stream entry (or enlightenment) actually exists.

Bad idea to say sotopana is fish sauce. Follow the BUDDHA, pay attention if one wishes to be free from cycle of endless birth. The final teaching of the LORD BUDDHA before PARINIBANNA instruction to the last disciple SUBADHA: In whatever doctrine or teaching the Noble Eightfold Path is not found, there will neither be found those who have become sotapanna, sakadagami, anagami or arahant (four levels of sainthood). But in those teachings where the Noble Eightfold Path is found, there also you will find the sotapanna, the sakadagami, the anagami and the arahant. In this teaching of mine, O Subhadda, is to be found the Noble Eightfold Path, and in it alone the sotapanna, the sakadagami, the anagami, and the arahant are found. In no other schools of religious teachers can such arya beings (saints) be found. And if only my disciples live rightly and follow my precepts or training rules, the world will never be without genuine arahants.

To a stream enterer, there is no such thing as a stream enterer. its just a way of explaining some qualities which need to be developed. One can not and should never assume someone is a stream enterer, and never try to 'become' anything. Because we are trying to escape the process of 'Becoming', so why try to 'become' a Stream enterer? - there is no such thing. There is only presence of defilement in lesser or greater degree. you can split that into four or eight types of person if you like, and those are the atta arya bukkala (eight kinds of noble persons)
@AjarnSpencer
@AjarnSpencer 6 лет назад
The monk is giving a teaching based on what he has learned in the suttas (repeat the teachings), but does not give any insights of a stream enterer, because he is not one yet. It is a lot more difficult to become a stream enterer than most westerners think.. and there are thousands of misguided people who think they are enlightened. All comments i read before me from Martin Weber and Window Cat here show complete ignorance. You cannot know if a person is a stream enterer unless you yourself have surpassed stream entry.. One thing i can say, is that Lobha (desire or greed), happens not just for money, but also for fame or reverence from others.. some monks want to have lots of devotees, some want status, some want money, some want power.. some dont want anything... the last type is the proper type. It is easier for a person to split a hair with an arrow at 100 meters than it is to become a stream enterer.

Quite a good talk, although it is hard to difficult in sufficient depth about these things to a diverse group of people who may or may not be seriously committed to the aim. Sometimes in such cases it is easy to make it sound simpler than it is... in theory simple, but in practice many little conditions and points can make a big difference. For example if you want to make fire using a stick and piece of wood, the theory is simple of how it works, you can even read about it, look at diagrams and all the rest- but just go try and do it! There's a lot of tricky technique involved; the devil is in the details. :)

Nepal as a kingdom only dates back to 1768. It is sorta an annoying, conceited meme. People during the time of the Buddha would have had no concept of that designation since the whole sub-continent was a mishmash of city states until decades after the Buddha’s parinibbana. Nepal doesn’t even have a single majority ethic group today. The largest ethnic group comprises only 16%. Blah.

The path into Sotopana one will experience in vipasanna breath meditation (in vipasanna one is actually cultivating two type of meditation that is samatha when you aware of breath and vipasanna when you notice change of breath to other state) so you are actually practice 2 meditation in one. Many do not realised even monk. Today many monk are reading monk and they have endless suttas and stories. It is not monk with direct experience or one has enter and return from the awakening state. One who has experience had little to tell and if ask to explain he will explain it accurately and do not need a thousands words. One need to tell the world now if one really has experience awakening as today many practioner who has long time meditate are not gaining any ground to enlightment and their desire to persue is weaken. The cause is they are not hearing the ariya they are listening to non ariya who read and tell what they know by reading. This is very unfortunate scenerio as today even monk are relaxing in their practice and very few ariya can be encounter. Let me be one that break the ignorance of the speculative path to the real path and fruition here. Here are my experience clearly and will be with me forever. A sotopana experience for the first time sharing to show the path clearly. My personnel experience was at that time was a samanera and was in a cave away from human activities and noise : Very important to be in secluded place when practicing vipasanna meditation. To gain entry into the path one will need to know the basic dhamma of the BUDDHA. To know if you have enter path and fruition, you will need this road map to clearly know if one have really enter into the path and fruition and is an ariya. Step one is have an object of concentration..... when well develop in the object one concentration it become subtle...... Concentration is free from hindrance(samadhi or 1st jhanna) ..... The mind become relax and concentration begin to feel easy( 2nd jhanna samadhi) .... One progress from develope mind concentration to the weaken of the 5 senses(now one is in 3rd jhanna samadhi) leaving the concious open.....then as one are at this awareness and calm state of concious one develop further into one point concentration where one are without breathing(one is breathing but one mind is very calm and bodily plessure (4th jhanna) and breathing is out of the mind and all body sensation temporary vanish and one is in total quietness left one with concious(upeka) .... as one is able to properly comprehen this state of mind of existence one suddenly come to the end of the dreams of existence and here one will now gain entry into the path of awakening. One has come to cease to exist at this point (conventional existence or dreams of existence ) One is now in nirodha samapathi and has stop the dreams of existence and is awaken(yes is awaken but you will have to come back from the dreams of existence to know your experience) Upon that ceaseation one do not know(the phenomenor non explainable but one is witnessing the phenomenor clearly) one will then gradually after the experience of ceaseation return from that ceaseation(awaken state) and return to the state of dream of existence(back into our dreams of existence of mundane world) to one pointerness or emptyness Upeka where one is concious again. So you need to understand from wakening state and upon returning to dreams of existence only concious is the first sense door to open(now the dreams of existence starts again) So you see before ceaseation and into ceaseation one meditation has bring one mindfulness to the point of only concious exist and concious ceases. One realise it clearly and one note it clearly and understand the change of dreams of existence to awaken moment clearly. One then further drop back from upeka to 4th jhanna when one whole body is filled will very strong pleasure feelings of happiness and one start to notice one sitting posture is automatically and easily in erect sitting posture(in samadhi) here the 5 sense is open again. With strong concentration and pleasure whole bodily feeling one start to remember the ceaseation experience Stop here and is enough road map to know the way in and return from nirodha samapathi. This is personnel experience share for the purpose to stop one speculating about attainment and hope every meditation practitioner can come to realise by themself and be awaken from the cycle of endless existence which is sufferring and painful. From this nirodha state of awakening one is confident in the BUDDHA, confident in the SANGHA as one know they are going into the path and fruition direction as one has enter and return. And very confident in the BUDDHA DHAMMA. One is sure of non self and one confident to proceed without doubt to persue full heartedly to practice the meditation awareness and concentration, mindfullness seeing aniccha, dukkha, anatha and knowing the mind and body phenomenor are seeing the kelisa in every moment of mindfull meditation of thinking, feelings, mind, mind object thoughts are nothing but kelisa or hindrances. One then really want to detach it from the heart. One see the way to enlightment clearly and one confident to proceed the way to detach all kelisa that bind the heart. Vipassana the only way that lead to ending of sufferring. One must truely never surrender. BUDDHAM SARANAM GACCHAMI

That seems to be the Sphere of Neither Perception nor Non Perception, not Cessation. Cessation is beyond meditation space. It is beyond the attainment where body+mind vanish. You speak about 8th Jhana, not the 9th Jhana.

Enlightment is explain in the 4 noble truth. The last truth explain the END of sufferring is experience only by one whose mind is at just a single moment touch the supreme moment of full detachment of greed, hatred and delusion by keen and clear comprehension(samadhi) of the meditation object that finally calming the mind weakening the 5 hindrances thus bring one to come out of the sphere of greed, hatred, delusion, realizing aniccha, dukkha, anatha, then follow by seeing the four foundation of body and mind phenomenor and penetrating it in depth until such time in a split moment one suddenly experience the ceesation of conciousness. This single moment are experience by the sharpening of the mind over certain time frame and until it is timely enough to totally in a single moment, momentarily freeing the mind from greed, hatred and delusion and one enter into the state of The end of sufferrings.(Buddhist call entering the stream or in pali is call magga and in english is entering path) One clearly enter this moment in buddhist terms known as magga or entering the path(this moment is ceesation of conciousness and that means you are no more exist in this single moment or to make it simple for you to understand, it is at this moment you are disconnect from this existence which mean you are no more living in this samasara for that nibanna experience moment. As the mind at that moment are so sharp after all the long meditation training and the mind is ready to remove all greed, hatred and delusion in the mind at that single moment of ceesation of conciousness. This is correctly to be understood the meaning of the last noble truth says : END of sufferring This explaination will be unknown by even many samatha and vipasanna practioners. The reason is simply because these practioner mind training has not yet ripen. They are only on queue still their mental training are on going like still on going tuning. Tune away the frequency of greed, hatred, delusion so as to reach the frequency of nibanna. which is the moment one conciousness momentarily ceased completely. Wish my message will one day be appreciated by another(ariya) one who has also successfully tune away the frequency of hatred, greed and delusion, one who is also finally are awaken and he/she will know what i have said here. The way to attainment is vipasanna. The mental purifications that really calm the mind and remove the kelisa. How i realise nibanna through vipasanna? (Greed,hatred,delusions)are momentarily removed in that moment. Sotapanna attainment how it occur and the sequence you will experience..... It starts with vipasanna sitting meditation then until mind shuts down.Before it shuts down,you are clearly comprehending the inbreath watching the beginning,the middle and the end of the breath. Ceesation of conciousness occur during this moment. The mind suddenly shuts down. Ceesation of conciousness is similar to mind shuts down: When this happen,you will not know.(it is because your mind has now stop fabricating just like a factory stop production all machine are switch off and no one working) That moment of not knowing is the moment you enter magga(path)and phala(fruition)where you are no more existing in this ignorance existence of samsara. After the magga phala attainment is over you will be in strong samadhi adsobtion where your whole body are radiance with strong pleasurable sensations.(jhana adsobtion) At that moment you still do not know you have attain magga phala.(only pleasurable sensation overwhelming the mind) As these strong samadhi adsobtion gradually subside,you will now be able to aware of the calmness of mind and body sitting in erect and firm(in lower samadhi) At this moment you can easily aware of your breath as it rise on inbreath and as it fall on outbreath. It is easily notice without effort. It was during this time you will suddenly remember or recollect the mind ceesation or shuts down clearly. You remember it very clearly before it shuts down, your were clearly comprehending inbreath rising,middle and end of breath and suddenly everything vanished,no more conciousness,mind shuts down. Then you realise whole body immersed with strong pleasurable sensations and when the sensation is over you can realise your mind is peaceful ,happy and mindfulness on inbreath and outbreath is easy and that your sitting meditation posture is straight and erect or is very firm(In samadhi state) In this way you now come to realise that you have finally come to know how suffering ends. Nibanna is being realise by your pure mind. Mind that is non greed,non hatred,non delusions. You are now a stream entry or is now a confirmed Ariya or sotapanna.You are free from 4 woeful realms of existence and you only have 7 more existence one as human and another 6 life as devas. If you are hard working and if you continue practice your vipasanna meditation and come to ceesations of conciousness for the second times,your next attainment is Sakadagami and you only have 3 more existence.And if the third time ceesation you are Anagami and the 4th time you are Arahat and will be fully aware of everything and totally free from ignorance completely and never to be born again. May my explaination be enlightening to vipasanna meditators and what is being explain are the final knowledge you will experience when your time for attainment is ripe. Suki hotu. The day when i experience the last noble truth. Once one practice mindfulness these 3 things begin to fade away. Greed, hatred, delusion Next these 3 things begins to show up. Aniccha, dukkha, anatha As one goes on continueing practice vipasanna further into the path, the first noble truths gets clearer and clearer. You will begin to experience dukkha in being mindful as you observed this physical body of yours. You begin to realize two things while you are progressing in your vipasanna practice. You experience all kinds of dukkha mentally and physically. Also you will also experience sukha as well. In this way you begin to experience the first truth and the second truth simultaneously. As you continue experiencing these 2 truth, the 3rd truth begin to be realised as you experience, samadhi, jhanna, upeka. With this three truth has been experience, faith begin to grow in the teaching of LORD BUDDHA. One upon settling and agreed with the 1st,2nd,3rd truth, the 8 noble path where the 6th,7th,8th truth become established. They are right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. One will determine to strive onto the path to realise the last truth. Ends of sufferrings. A sotopana who has experience the last truth while on vipasanna meditation experience the sitting meditation momentarily went into mindfulness being cut off, similarly like a computer monitor being power off. This moment of vipasanna sitting meditation when one experience end of suffering is like the mind being switch off. At that moment one is experiencing end of sufferring (magga) and once into magga, the conciousness of existence vanished. Upon palla one experience of unconcious mind returns and still upon palla one still do not know as one is in extreme pleasure seeing vibration on the whole physical body accompany with peace,clear and calm state of mind. These pleasures stay on by it self until it gradually subside and disappear and replace by only very clear and calm mind so tame that mindfulness seem to be easy to practice.And one will notice the experience bring about the meditative sitting posture are straight like in samadhi and the mind is bright and clear and meditative contemplation on the breath is easy. In this state of mind suddenly one begin to remember the cessation moment in the sitting meditation. Here i will not emphasised further as you will one day when experience it you will know by yourself. Hope everyone do not give up their vipasanna meditation practice and may all being be well and happy. BUDDHAM SARANAM GACCHAMI

i see @Turd Zilla you were present with the Buddha all his life by his side so you know its not true... Nobody knows whether he did or did not say something because we have no proof.. but the Dhamma he taught we can prove, through self observation. Most sutras were written 300 years after Buddha's death dude.. so who knows? a stream enterer would say 'I dont know'. What matters is self introspection and development in Jhana to gain insights.. and see with your own eyes.. knowing about Buddha wont help anyone. Just practice, thats all that helps
@AjarnSpencer
@AjarnSpencer 6 лет назад
Actually Turd Zilla if the stories are true.. and thats all we have.. stories), the Buddha told of once being a rukka devadha meaning tree spirit.. so YES he did speak of plants being sentient. Actually everything even a rock is permeated with some form of consciousness. And he talked to trees. He said there are conscious beings with one, 2, 3, 4, 5 and even more Khandas.. a human has 5 khandas (aggregates), whereas a rock has 2 aggregates (form and consciousness).. here is a pic of The Buddha addressing three tree spirits, India, 350 CE. www.bhantedhammika.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/The-Buddha-addressing-three-tree-spirits-India-350-CE..jpg A tree does not move but is alive, and is sentient in some form. A rock is harder to see as being still and also sentient.. but actually rocks grow and change just like trees and also dissolve and disappear just like trees.. mountains grow.. just very slowly.. so in fact, they are not still and cant move.. they are moving, just like you and me, but on a slower scale. It is Man's arrogant assumption that he, and only he, is sentient
