This album and her infamous SEX book was the biggest scandal of the early 90s. Literally all anyone talked about for years after it’s release. Loved being a teenager at this time! Imagine being 14 and listening to this?! Epic! Great reaction 😉
I was 14 when this came out too! This album hit just when I became a super-fan and I played it endlessly in 1992/93. Still my favorite. So many great album tracks that could have been singles.
At the time a lot of Madonna's friends had died of AIDS. This album dealt with a lot of anger sadness and desperation about how so much was being lost. There is moments of happiness that come to mind in moments like rain. But even those feel like the expectation that darkness wont he forever. I think this album is a great reflection of what was not openly adressed by people in life out of fear and she got the backlash because the fear was so general. It was an incredibly hard tome for many people and the fact that she went ahesd and adtessed it speaks of how she was there for people who did not have a voice and who where actively shut down. Very important piece of art and work imo.
Madonna's best album...she has many great All killer, no filler albums, but this is THE album thar basically cemented her risqué reputation...however, it was pop music. There were some great lyrics, melodies and bridges on this album and Shep Pettibone brought his best. The fact that he produced a song like "Rain" is incredible...it sounds completely different than his signature sound of gritty and grinding club jams. Btw, her reaction to Thief of Hearts and Secret Garden was hilarious
She doesn’t care. Literally she deleted most of the reactions to Madonna’s albums BECAUSE the videos didn’t reach 100.000 views. It’s time to laugh now.
Her reaction to "Where life begins" is just like mine when I turned 18 and realised I hadn't been paying attention to the lyrics ... and now is one of my favourite songs :D
Some of these songs like D&D became such classics that they’re part of pop music’s dna and influenced so many other songs to the point it’s impossible to grasp today how groundbreaking they were when they came out.
@@soaribb32 The record wasn’t one of her biggest commercial success as she was totally vilified for her book. This album was basically the biggest A lister out there going underground so it wasn’t big in terms of sales but Deeper and Deeper which took where Shep Pettibone had started on the Express Yourself remix and defined a certain dance pop style that has infused countless pop songs till today. Also Erotica, Waiting and many more tracks on there with the overall sonic style and spoken words over deep house defined a sound at that time that hasn’t aged.
I think Rain was actually put on on the album to lighten it up a bit and be the creamy, pop, smooth, cleaner, hit maker machine sound she was known for w/o as much innuendo. I think of Cherish, True Blue, and Don’t Stop on their respective albums (even tho True Blue is one of my faves) did the same. They are almost too easy, like M made them in her sleep for the critical plebes of her more meaningful work.
@@ethypoo I don’t think Rain was meant to be dirty like that - the lyrics are too sweet/poetic/truly longing. On the other hand, “Bad Girl” is what I think serves the purpose of what you’re hinting at. “Bad girl drunk by six,” which I think she really meant “drunk by sex,” bc she’s a thirsty nympho - kinda like how she switched up words in Madame X’s “God Control” which was really “Gun Control.” ... but who knows? Lol 😆.
@@shockalockabocka it honestly depends on how u interpret at the end of the way. one person says it’s about a squirt, another says its about the longing of a lover, hence the “sad yet refreshing rain.” but sonically speaking yes it lights up the album
Sexy and refreshing to begin with, but also informative, truthful, and lyrically fearless. To add, it’s Madonna’s first “ hardcore “ album, that was released in the 90’s together with a hard-cover sex book that shook the whole world, with her nude photos and other big celebrities in Hollywood, like Naomi Campbell and Vanilla Ice, just to name a few. Furthermore, the controversy never ends as Madonna continue to shine and continue to make movies and music, and re-inventing herself as the years pass by, and even up to now. Luv your reaction girl and keep it up!
You are right, In This Life is a song dedicated to her friend who died because of AIDS. I love your reactions to the songs... my favorite songs in the album are Depper and Deeper, Rain, Bad Girl, In This Life... I remember when Erotica came out, I hate it the album title song... it was so different at that time to anything else she had tone till that moment. I guess it was like a naughtier version of Justify My Love which was a very controversial song in 1991. Going back to Erotica, at first I hated the song... but it grew on me these past 30 years... Erotica is one of my top 5 favorite Madonna albums.
…and don’t forget the clever reference to Vogue’s lyrics in Deeper And Deeper! ☺️❤️ This album is a masterpiece, and when Shep Pettibone is part of the production, YOU KNOW IT’S GOING TO BE GOOD. ❤️❤️❤️
The new uploads have already 30k, so her videos would eventually hit 200k, if they had not already at this point. The Erotica reaction is so fun, she really should have kept it-
And now a year later the re upload by this account already has 70k views so they surely would be much higher than 100k on her channel. She missed out on all these views@@avetiq3905
“ I knew it from the start that you would desert me You’re gonna break my heart Baby, please don’t hurt me I knew it from the start that you would desert me You’re gonna break my heart Baby please don’t hurt me. WAITING for you Can’t you see? I’m WAITING ...” I love this Album , when it first came out and I still get that “ FEVER”. Great Album indeed...
For me, Erotica and Bedtime Stories complement each other. Erotica is hip hop influenced, although Trip Hop elements are also there in songs like the title track and Secret Garden, a genre that she used more in Bedtime, which makes sense, because trip hop is also influenced by hip hop. So, when listening to both albuns, there's a very intersting sense of transition.
AJAYS Reaction to the epic Album Erotica is everything we needed it to be... this album is an amazing body of work that maybe my mid teen self didnt fully appreciate back then but yes its stood the test of time....30 years 🎯
i actually think ajayii took them down herself because i remember it said it was removed by the uploader, and i feel she did that to remove videos that had low views, cuz her least viewed video on her channel currently was over 160k views and many of her madonna reactions were only 70k-90k views so she took those down. the remaining madonna reactions on her channel have over 200k channels
Why's It So Hard doesn't have featuring credits because technically a feature is only considered when an artist has a very prominent part either singing or producing. Backing vocals are not considered a featuring. However, sometimes songs have "featuring" credits even when technically shouldn't have just for marketing purposes. Tony Shimkin provides the male backing vocals.
Great review! (I’m huge Madonna fan). I was never a fan of this period from her. I just remember it being really wacky and a lot of people shook their heads (it almost reminds me of Donald Trump’s antics). I remember thinking well at least Madonna won’t cause a stir like Sinead O Conner...People thought her career was over for a while, but she really came back in the latte 90’s with Ray of Light! Listening to this album as a whole about 8 years ago, I was shocked at how catchy the title track was. My favorite tracks on this album are Rain, Bye Bye, Baby, and Fever is foreshadowing how a lot of female pop stars would sound during the late 90s. I think Madonna's best stuff is her (surprisingly least risky albums). Ray of Light, True Blue. Overall, I think this is an interesting Madonna time period. Not my favorite, but it’s interesting to see her toned down her image it a few years later. The antics of her during that time period turned a lot of people off. I had Jody Watley and Mariah Carey’s stuff on my tape player.
I think Madonna did all that controversial stuff so everybody would shut the f up about what a star of her calibre could or couldn't do, but she deff thought she could get away with it, she almost didn't lmao but she knew how to bounce back because of her reinvention power, and it's pretty commendable how she took the risk and the heat for all the girls that came after her
@@user-mz2ne4yh2t I was surprised at how much backlash that Sinead o Conner received during that same era. What fascinates me us the fact that most of the female pop stars from the 90s had some sort of big scandal and backlash. It’s interesting to me, that the media has completely erased or re written their careers.
Madonna has said she turned up the sex because people were making everything about her sexual. She pretty much said… you want sex? Ok here ya go turned up to 100 percent plus here’s a bonus book…”sex” and a bonus movie “body of evidence”
“Bedtimes Stories” was pretty big, though… “Take a bow” was her longest running #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, no? There were some absolute bangers on that album and some absolutely iconic videos. And I disagree that “Ray of life” was “less risky”. Imo it was a huge risk, but one that paid off. It was trendsetting, groundbreaking, transformative. She had people rocking out to Sanskrit mantras 🤷🏻♀️

Where’s the Debut Album @? That’s her #1 release to the World 🌎 and one if not in the top 5 Favorites since it was the First one ever... Labeled with her Namesake Simply MADONNA LOVE that Album , been a Die-Hard Fan ever since... I was in Catholic School 🏫 @ the time, Amazing and Fresh start to such an Amazing Career!
This album was considered her worst album for selling only 6;000;000 copies according to her standard yet American life took the place;; Now MDNA the worst Album except “ Masterpiece “ which won an award
NOOOOOO I DIDNT KNOW IT GOT TAKEN DOWN 😭 My most liked comment was on that video 💀 My comment: "How did she not give Rain a mark?" 2.3K likes last time I saw it.. Like my comment for charity
Ajay 1st reacted to The whole of madonna's discography was done in lockdown on a weekly basis. Starting with Madame x the most Recent which she just didnt fully get...lm surprised shes deleted so many of these M reactions as we all watched how many thousands of new followers she gained during that whole series....
Idk how I got unsubscribed but I’m back. There were no other artist talking on those matters the way Madonna did & to this day she suffers the bigoted Christian backlash.
Used to listen to this when it came out in the 90’s (I’m an 80’s baby). This was a huge scandal and I feel like now we can all listen without the sex book stuff attached as much.

@@CalebGUSHypocrisy It's literally a full proper studio album. It's NOT the soundtrack to "Dick Tracy". That film had it's own soundtrack. It's on Wikipedia.
The only thing that bothered me about this review is that AIDS is still a pretty big problem not as bad as it was in 1992 but it is still an issue so I feel like this song still resonates today we shouldn’t turn our backs like it doesn’t exist and second and this is just me being picky she’s reviewing the edited versionthere’s still the track did you do it which was originally number 13 while Secret Garden was 14
AIDS is an immunodeficiency caused by severe malnutrition, an immune response to an excess of toxins (poppers, hard drugs) or some HIV medications like AZT, which killed HIV+ patients in the 1980s. That immune response is temporary, which is why people can be considered "undetectable."
