Hi, If it was me I would have cut open one of the Akaso mic's to find out just how they have it wired up, and then make an adapter of my own just for the Akaso so I could use my other mic's. I bet the Akaso mic is just an ordinary mic with the wires oriented slightly differently in the usb plug inorder to prevent aftermarket adapters from working with the Akaso cameras. Also when testing mic's try isolating the camera from the external mic's.

@@JosephWilsonProductions I'm there with you. Just took mine out today. The only thing to be aware of is when you are using the Akaso external mic to adjust the mic sensitivity. This is done in the camera. Depending on what you are doing will depend on the sensitivity. I usually have it set around 60% but today I was on my motorcycle and probably should have had it around 50%.

I bought this camera a year and a half ago or so. I wasn't aware external mics didn't work on them and the quality was meh so I sent it back. I have it a 3/5 review. Last week Akaso reached out to me and offered to give me a free camera if I changed my review. I absolutely did. The camera is pretty awesome too!

Thank you SO much for testing/showing your assessment. As the stock Akasio mike apparently has a different plug of some sort, would it be worth trying to cut their wire, and splicing on a better quality mic? I am looking for an exterior mic, and as the Akasio mic is so inexpensive, I am not sure if it is really all that good. I'd like a decent mic. Thoughts?

I'm late to the forum...but I bought a V50X and also tried to add a non-Akaso mic. I'm a tech by trade...so I pinned out the connector. On the Akaso mic, 1 is ground and 2+3 are tied to the condenser hot side. I tried to wire up a micro-USB +condenser with no luck. So I ordered a micro-USB extension. When you add the micro-USB extension, the Akaso mic does not work either. So, I suspect they have probably done something mechanically to their pinout to make ONLY the Akaso work. So, my solution is to order an extra Akaso mic and use only the mic cord from it to wire up another real, external microphone. Take care.

@chi11estpanda
@chi11estpanda 3 года назад
I know this is an old video and you may have found a solution or determined why by now, but I would venture to say that your initial assumptions are correct in that it's simply a proprietary wiring system they use for their USB connector and most likely it's just a cross over of one of the grounds through a 15 Ohm resister or something of the like. Primarily because (and this is based purely on speculation with no vested interest in Akaso cameras, came here to understand the question posted on a forum somewhere), when you plugged the Rode mic which has external power, or it;s own power, you were able to have sound recorded on both channels implying the camera was using its internal mic albeit sometihng being plugged in. The power ground coming through the sound cable from the Rode mic's own mic would've most likely told the camera it's just a charging cable and to keep on its internal mic. Whereas the lapelle mic would've needed shadowpower to function and because it essentially muted one of your audio channels, I'm guessing that by plugging in a differently wired usb adapter and the mic, it interupted the expected grounding signal to activate taking usb sound input rather than use its internal mic. The main reason for that is so that you could still plug in any normal usb to charge as a compliance with the USB standard while taking audio through USB input must be received through a specific pin otherwise an internal relay goes off to prevent damage in the event that any non-proprietary standard cable was attempted at being used and why on channel got kinda turn off because the relay was triggered in sensing a single power ground loop (where the lapelle mic had to draw its own power from the camera to function) but otherwise adds an electric current from the camera itself and sets of the relay. But yea, long story short, AJ had the most effective but destructive solution. However, if they incorporated a specific ohm pull-up resistor in their usb cable to signal the on-board chip then even that method wouldn't work. Alternatively, a simple multimeter would best determine the pin layout and required resistance if needed. But, I will say, I was surprised at how you tested the mics because what I do in this sort of situation in testing external mic working with an action camera, what I do is just rub the microphone or tap it. The tap is too quiet to be picked up by any internal mic and would sound loud as heck if picked up on the mic. Hope that helps anyone coming by this video! EDIT: Oh btw, it's a short between D+ and D- that makes their mic's different (probably, based on USB Compliance standards). The mystery though is the right level resister you'd need in between.

life changing info!!!!! I found that if I open the video in VLC (im sure any other video players with EQs can work as well), and tweaked the EQ setting, I got very good results. I recorded test audio using both the internal and external AKASO mic. I opened the multi channel eq in VLC app and boosted the high end, dropped some of the mids and boosted the bottom end. you can find and drop the most egregious frequencies. when done, i found a very pleasing quality to the audio. this worked with both the internal and external mic. the external mic was much better, but i can't lie, even the internal mic sounded decent. I think with some EQing, the mics work. let me know what you think and what your results are.

Thanks for this very complete and exhaustive test. I am definitely considering this camera / mic setup fo motovlogging this season. I am a little concerned that the external mic only records to one channel and the external to the other. I think wind noise on the external could be a problem. I believe it's the module inside the camera that is bad, so no matter what you do, it's gonna stay bad! According to the forum post below, there are two hardware versions of the Akaso V50 Pro. Only one of them supports the external microphone. But you have to be careful to flash the right firmware version. Otherwise you brick the camera without hope of repair and you have an expensive paperweight. It is best to contact Akaso directly and ask for the correct/latest firmware. But a little off topic: Greg, why do you always mention the American dimensions of the devices? You are Canadian and should - like me here in Europe - use the metrics. (Which IMHO are more internationally understandable anyway.) Just me 2 cents... ;-) www.goprawn.com/forum/sunplus-cams/12021-akaso-v50-pro-bricked-after-firmware-update?p=12044#post12044

I bought the Akaso about 8 months ago and I’m very disappointed with it, however it does take good pictures and videos but the audio Is bad, I to gat the external mic from Akaso and that was a improvement over the built in mic but still not acceptable. I’m now ordering a GoPro hero 11 from GoPro they have a great price on the accessory bundle, so in my opinion save your money and just buy the GoPro, you will be much happier with it.

I emailed AKASO to ask which mic I should purchase for my V50 Pro. Here is their response: “We are much willing to tell you that the AKASO V50 Pro can use a external microphone which will meet your needs.” Huh?!? I’m waiting on an adapter and will try the same test as you did. I’ll report back with my findings. I like the camera, but the internal mic is unusable. Thanks for your vids! please tell me you are ot suggesting buying a oscilloscope to do that that is just a stupid option if yu are willing to buy a oscilloscope to fix this issue you would be better of just buying a gopro or buying a external recorder , as for a volt meter its just too much effort for such a cheap camera for most people would you not think , once you need to buy somethign else to fix a issue like this on such a cheap device there is no longer a point simple as that , most of the peopel who buy this would not have the expertise to do all that or even be able to read a oscilloscope or volt meter mate i am a sound engineer with a degree in electronic engineerign and i would not even bother doing this it is just too much effort for a action camera of this caliber

Edward Halterman at The Office of the Pacific well I’ve only been using 64 gig cards so I really can’t say. And a lot of cameras can use larger cards but only register 64gigs. So pointless to use larger cards. Not saying that this is happening with the AKASO as I can’t test at this point.

I have wasted 2 weekends worth of helmet cam videos using this camera. Video is excellent. Audio is completely un useable with nothing but loud wind noise. Bought the AKASO external mic. Waste of money because it only records to 1 channel. The internal mic cannot be turn off, and is always recording nothing but wind noise to the other channel. I will be returning this kit for a full refund. Really sucks because the video is awesome.

I’m pretty sure you can shut off the internal audio channel. You just need an editor that allows you to do this. I’ve done it in Final Cut Pro when I used to use this camera.
