AKG P220 vs. Audio Technica 2020 | VO Mic Comparison

We put the AKG Perception P220 microphone up against the Audio-Technica AT2020 to hear the difference on both male and female voice-over. Both of these microphones are often compared in the realm of both VO and music production as great starter microphones. We wanted to hear directly how they stood up against each other on VO in particular.
Not only could these microphones be great for those starting out, they could potentially also be great for talent on-the-go as a travel microphone for use in hotel rooms, etc. These could also be used for small podcasting setups or as a backup microphone for podcasts.
The AKG Perception p220 retails at around $150 and the AT2020 retails at around $100.
Female Talent: Laura Young
Male Talent: Greg Johnson
Keep in mind that these voiceover microphone comparisons are best when listened to in a quality set of headphones or studio monitors. It can be hard to hear the difference when listening on a laptop or phone.
Also, remember that every microphone will sound different on your voice and in your recording environment. The room where we record these comparison videos has been professionally built and acoustically treated, so these mics are likely to sound different in a different space.

I'm glad someone else caught that. It's subtle in this video but this test is also clearly in a controlled professional studio environment. Issues like that are amplified in someone's basement or bedroom, and that has to be taken into account at this price point

@@igor-grudinin well, depends on your own personal listening device. I'm using Beyer dynamic DT 770 250ohm pro headphones. I Can hear the subtleties in the Mics 100% the AT2020 has a very sharp draft upward into the High frequency range + a "Hissing/static" in the background. the AKG P220 is more pronounced in the Low-mid,// throat frequency ranges and a nice, smooth upper mid-high range with little to almost zero background noise.

The Audio-Technica sounds a bit bright to a point where the S's are too emphasized. There is also a slight hiss/noise most evident during gaps between words and sentences. The AKG, for me, sounds more natural. My vote is for the AKG

Awesome content! I really like the AT2020 for its price in comparison to the p220 which costs twice as much. But is the noise floor really as bad as I hear from this video? Thats my number 1 concern of that microphone. If noise floor is as bad then do you know similar alternatives when it comes to quality for under 100$ ?
@voscripts
@voscripts 4 года назад
In a word, Yes. The AT2020 has more noise. Currently, the 2020 is $119 and the 220 is $150 at Sweetwater so not really that much of a price difference. It's our opinion that the 220 is the better mic and is easier to EQ if needed. Take a listen to the Blue Ember. It retails for about $100. We have one and do plan on doing some comparisons at some point.

While we can’t confidently recommend one over the other since we haven’t compared those two particular mics as of yet, we have noticed that we tend to like Rode’s lower cost options a bit better than Audio-Technica, but that still always depends on the particular microphone, and it could be that the AT2020 sounds better when put up against each other.

Yeah... That AKG is pretty spectacular man. It’s the same when you use it on both male and female vocals. AKG made one hell of a Studio Recording mike for that price range. And an awesome looking case to go with it. There only on mike you could really match to it. And that’s the Neumann TLM 103. An AKG thousand dollar professional Studio condenser mic? Yep. And it still matched it, except the TLM has a little warmer presence across its entire range than the AKG P220. You simply cannot beat it for the money and quality at this price level.

Akg wins easily, even though it was placed at a worse angle. Also: when did the AT2020 change from SDC to LDC?
@voscripts
@voscripts 2 года назад
We assure you the angles are identical. What you’re seeing is an optical illusion due to the cameras. Traditionally, pencil microphones like the Shure SM 81 is considered a small diaphragm condenser. Anything larger than that is considered a large diaphragm condenser, The vernacular of medium diaphragm condenser is also used, particularly with respect to marketing. However there is no hard and fast rule and we see where the lines can be blurred.

@voscripts
@voscripts 4 года назад
We don’t think there’s a right mic overall per se, as it’s dependent on ones voice or application. Cost of course is also a factor. There tends to be a correlation between cost and quality, albeit less so today than in years past. However you may want to look into a dynamic like an SM7b or an RE20. The warm 251or a warm 87 may also be a good option!. The warm 87 dynamics are a little uncontrolled though. It’s been our experience that 990 is very brittle and grating to listen to. We were going to do a comparison of the 990 but ours went kaput. Rode makes some good bang for the buck mics.

Any recommendations for a untreated room, a budget low-reverb mic?
@voscripts
@voscripts 5 лет назад
You’ll want to look at a hypercardioid mic if not a shotgun mic like the rode NTG2. However still be cautious where you put a shotgun indoors as you’ll get rear room reflections into the back of the mic. Shotguns are really meant to be in a diffuse field environment like outdoors, otherwise you’ll end up with some phase issues from reflections off the wall. You may want a dynamic mic like the sm57 or the higher priced sm7b which was designed for spoken word. Dynamics are less ‘“reactive” compared to condensers and you’ll naturally sit closer to the mic which will provide a greater direct to reverberant signal You can make cheap room treatment out of compressed fiberglass panels for about $20 a panel but that’s for another discussion.

The AT-2020 is a medium diaphragm condenser microphone, not a large diaphragm. The AT-2035 is a true LDC and would be a better comparison to the AKG P220 as it has a much lower self noise and more detail. The AT-2020 would be similar to the lower priced AKG P120.
