The yellow pages are typically the supervisor’s drawovers. You come back from lunch and your shot folders from your OUT box is back in your IN box with yellow sheets. You’d just go thru and see how it was fixed so you could learn- in the case where just an arm or face was fixed you make a new layout incorporating the fixes. The finished complete yellow pages are “approved”, they go on to animation. So cool Otomo was so deep in the trenches with the crew. all those iconic shots like: The clown getting the pipe to the neck, the bike skid, the climb up the bike fender face kick, tetseo punching the shit out of the clown. The toys forming the giant milk bleeding bear Etc. it seems to me Otomo animated those shots mostly himself. In iron giant Brad Bird animated the shot of jittery Hogarth after he drinks the espresso, talking about skipping a grade, talking a mile a minute. You can dip in a do a solo as the maestro, but you also have to conduct the orchestra.

I had no idea that's why those pages were yellow! Adds a whole new depth to my appreciation for this book. I don't think Otomo animated the shots mostly himself, but rather corrected and added detail to the animator's work that was already there. Much like how Miyazaki corrects thousands of animator's drawings on his films.

I got this before the Kayfabe Effect. Probably the coolest book I have ever owned

Just copped all 3 of his akira books on your recommendations. Really jazzed to deep dive into the Otomo process. Also really glad about the Street Angel reprint can't wait to have more Jim Rugg goodness on the shelf and reading list.

Ok I’m definitely in,guys! I was on the ground floor in the mid 80’s when Manga comics became very prominent and was blown away by the quality of the art/narrative which I know interested and influenced American comics/animation and it really came at a great time! At the same time I jumped into Moebius at Marvel/Epic,2000 AD and Geoff Darrow Hard boiled! I love ❤️ the creative process etc and that’s exactly why I subscribed to Kayfabe! Look forward to seeing more reviews of Manga/Anime! Keep reading and making comix 👍🎯😎⚡️❤️💎! Damn straight!🔥

I am convinced these guys were straight up possessed. How can mortals just draw like this and make it look effortless?

Yes Oromo has all the pages of the sliding shot. As seen in the Akira Archive book cut 0170 including the little green lighting drawings

What blows my damned fool mind was that, yes, Otomo after a while DID relegate most of Akira the manga to his assistants... But he was still drawing the characters for the comic AS he was directing a feature film. WHEN DID HE SLEEP? Also, if you want to see the illustrator who inspired Otomos PARTICULAR style with faces, check out Yoshitaro Isaka who Otomo mentioned was an influence and you can kind of see where Otomo got the faces of his characters from.

He was also co-parenting a child and his work on Robot Carnival and Neo-Tokyo overlapped with this!

@@J.S.3259oh, but Robot Carnival and Neo Tokyo stuff was made way earlier and realeased meanwhile Akira was being published. I know because of an article about Otomo in Animation Obsessive.

Interesting to note that Otomo was courted by Jeffrey Katzenberg to make an animated adaptation of Jimmy Palmiotti’s ASH around 2000. DreamWorks animation apparently at one point did believe that animation is a medium and not a genre

13:36 one of the hardest things ever to do (at least for me): drawing a manga character you’ve made from the ground up at that angle and staying on model lol

Would love to have something like this. I’m mainly inspired by manga but it’s hard to find anything that’s artisan/artist edition style or a raw art scanned stuff like Jaime’s wrestling book that isn’t in a Western style. As much as I love my American stuff, Otomo has the perfect blend of cartoony and realism that I’d like to achieve and I’d love to see his raw lines up close for myself.
