Inspired by a conversation with renowned Australian architect, Peter Stutchbury, this tropical, sustainable and contemporary design was underpinned by a process called “reading the land”. This involved studying and sketching natural patterns of the land from far above the earth to understand the macro environment, and key flora and fauna significant to the Turrbal People of south-east Queensland.
The result were four north-facing townhouses that gently step down the natural slope towards Yaralla street with large, private, sun-filled indoor and outdoor living spaces stretching north on all three levels. Large sliding doors, slatted shades and louver windows on the north and south ends allow occupants to "sail" the building, fine tuning its natural light, shading and sea breeze for enhanced passive comfort all year-round.
The floating pods arrangement of the skillion Surfmist roofs and skylights stretch north-east capturing sunlight and sea breeze deep into each townhouse, inspired by the local Blue Water Lily. Curved, white internal walls, floating ceilings and curved glass balustrades were inspired by the shifting sandbanks of nearby Moreton Bay. The striking tropical facade is comprised of a series of loosely overlayed Weathertex and Yakisugi cladding, glazing and pine slatted shading facades. Large diagonal pine columns were inspired by sketching Moreton Bay’s figs, while a mix of round white steel diagonal columns and timber slatted shades pay contemporary homage to the traditional “Queenslander”.
