Yasumi Lodge (meaning ‘vacation’ in Japanese), is a two-storey, two-bedroom timber lodge nestled in the backyard.
It is inspired by traditional Japanese and New Orleans-French architecture, and an artistic process that draws on the natural surrounds as taught by Peter Stutchbury. This involved sketching a satellite view of the natural patterns of the New Orleans landscape, local flora and fauna significant to the area, as well as observing the land’s natural contours and patterns. Patterns were then refined into architectural motifs.
The result is a striking, sun-facing, two-storey timber framed bungalow with two decks overlooking the side street, park and canal, suspended above natural ground on concrete piers allowing sub-floor ventilation and cooling. External walls are cladded in traditional Japanese Yakisugi full-char sustainably grown timber and natural pine, capped with a barn-style metal, insulated, 40-degree pitched roof with large, angled gables at each end to capture prevailing warm breezes while providing shade and privacy.
Designed to breathe, the front façade contains large sliding cedar doors and aluminium windows, creating a venturi effect, drawing in cool air and exhausting hot air from openings at the rear and roof skylights to maximise interior comfort.
External aged-copper shutters and cedar venetians manually adjust to control sunlight and privacy from the main residence and street. Other materials and finishes include aged copper gutters, downpipes and bathroom facades, aged brass kitchen benchtops with natural pine flooring, wall panelling and slatted ceilings, and highlighted black timber beams and columns creating an unique Japanese-New Orleans inspired oasis.
