Hi from the UK, the reason he knows so much is that he has a history degree from St Edmund Hall of the University of Oxford, he is very knowledgable about the subject so he uses it in his shows, a very intelligent man, another great reaction thanks 👍

I had an English teacher like that. We used to call him Duck, because of the way he strolled with his cane. Typical old school English eccentric. He'd been all over the world when most of the world was British. Taught us in the twilight of his career. Great storyteller. Great character and if you didn't dick around too much in his class, great teacher (Apparently, we found out in a local newspaper article, well known in jazz circles in the US due to his ragtime compositions, but unknown over here. RIP Tom Gordon).

The pub landlord is just a Character he plays. He was an Historian before the comedy and has also produced some serious programs about the D Day landings and the liberation of Europe in WW2

I actually saw him do this live at the Edinburgh Festival over 30 years ago, he was part of the Oxford Revue. Most of their sketches were a bit meh, but he was the stand out. Still had a reasonable head of blonde hair back then (Al Murray, not me).

Lots of British pubs run regular pub quizzes. I do a pub quiz with my friends every wednesday. It's great fun and makes a great atmosphere! If you want to see more Al Murray do a deep dive into "8 Out of Ten Cats Does Countdown", but while you're doing that, check out the late, great Sean Lock (one of the team captains) you won't regret it, I promise you!

I saw him live recently at the theatre. His crowd work was brilliant. It's just a shame my anxiety meant I wasn't able to participate as much as I wanted to. Watched him as a kid when I was super patriotic, now at 31 I've calmed down but it was great to see an idol live, who looks just the same, sounds the same, and is still proper quality.

Al Murray is a very well educated man who has a degree in history from Oxford University, his speciality is military history. His pub landlord that he does is just a persona that he did in a comedy series that he did set in a comedy show that was based about a pub set in London. He played the pub landlord character in the comedy show for the BBC. He has done many TV series about history on the history channel plus other TV channels. The beer that he drinks on stage at his one man comedy shows is actually non alcoholic lager so he can't get pissed. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

In the old days this is what pub quizzes were like, four to a table, beer in hand several teams competing to answer... They were good nights out. A shame they disappeared... In my day I did ancient Greek and Nordic mythology, a smidge of physics, mathematics, cinematography and a little general knowledge, you get a good mix like geography, history, economics, politics etc and a strong table could clean up.

Al Murray, The Pub Landlord is the full character title. This particular show was him revisiting his early live sets with the relevant year on the backdrop. He has performed this character since the 90s, had a sitcom and a chat show, all in character and all set in a pub. Plus several historical documentaries out of character just as Al Murray. Still touring and as popular as ever. Nations Of The World is a must see routine

Another cool fact about Al - he's a half decent drummer too. I went to see a Genesis tribute act in London in the early 2000s and the big surprise on the night was Al Murray came out and the compered for the evening. He came out and did a 30 minute set before the music where he laid into the audience, then when the band came out for the encore at the end Al stood behind the drummer and was playing some of the drums over his shoulders. It was a great evening.

Just an idea for you two.... I think you would enjoy the Alan Davies series "As Yet Untitled". Very relaxed, a little bit of alcohol (not much), a bit rude - not much.... Watch more than one - the episodes vary within the episode, so... you need more than one. Even if you don't feature them on you channel.. worth seeing.

Al Murray does a pod cast called "We have ways of making you talk" with James Holland a WW2 historian and author, where they discuss everything mainly to do with WW2. Al is very knowledgeable and funny.

Actor Comedian. This character Pub Landlord is very very clever inverted Piss take of the character and of certain elements of society. The sad FACT is people use to go to these shows believing he was that person along side the educated people. These churls didn't realise he was satirising them and their views on politics which has been weaved into working class British (English ) society for Centuries. He cleverly weaves intellect into the stereo type

There used to be a TV show called Time Gentleman Please where Al played the part of a pub landlord. His stage show is a spin off from that where he still uses the pub landlord character but has expanded the subject matter using his vast knowledge of history. The guy is genuinely very intelligent.

It's the other way round - his Pub Landlord was the character he created first for the Edinburgh Fringe and is what made him famous. A few years after, once he had become more well known, he was approached by the TV producers to make Time Gentlemen Please, which is basically his standup routine at the time put into a sitcom setting with characters feeding him lines.

I used to think that was the case too, but it turns out that the "pub landlord" standup character actually predated the TV series. The TV series was based off his standup roujtine, not the other way around.

Unfortunately nobody mentioned Afghanistan. The British were thoroughly defeated in the 1st Afghan War (1838-42), won the 2nd war (1878-80), lost the 3rd (1919) and lost the 4th (2001-14). That's game set and match and a 3-1 loss.
